Hooper's knee just goes out before the line. I think that was a bit of white line fever from Hooper, who didn't have the pace to finish the try. Needed to step back inside or look for support.
Canes win 41 to 29, exciting game. Both teams played some good rugby, throwing it around. The biggest problem for the Tahs is their woeful ruck work. They gave up way too many turnovers at the ruck time.
The other issue is playing fast and loose with the Canes, who have the players to make you pay on the counter.

Folau has done his best work in attack so far this season running down the 13 channel where he can use his footwork and strength one on one against his opponent and then offload to a support player either on the inside or outside. Yet again I can't understand why he isn't being given the opportunity to play in that position [mind you I thought AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) was one of the Tahs best tonight] - at 13 Folau won't be put in a position where he has to kick often, something he doesn't seem comfortable with preferring to pass to someone who can kick with confidence or running across field to try and link up with a runner.

Yeah, the Canes pack is arguably the weakest in the NZ conference. The Tahs needed to attack them there, like the Reds did. Instead by playing too wide too often and not committing players to protecting their own ball they invite the Canes to rip into them on the counter.
Cheika needs to adjust his patterns if he wants to keep playing like this. His loosies need to play wider so they can be first to the rucks a few channels out, and their tight forwards need to work harder close in.
If the Tahs keep playing like this they will rip a few sides apart, but be beaten by teams who either take it to them around the ruck, or who can rip them apart on the counter after getting the inevitable turnovers.

Agree on AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper). I think the best players for the Tahs were Foley, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and Folau, maybe in that order.
The Tahs' pigs is where they lost the game. Hooper was all over the park but doesn't have the impact at ruck time that he needs. Pocock, Smith and Gill all well ahead in this area to Hooper.

Last year I was screaming for AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) to stop being played in the Centers but he's been really good at 13 this year. I wouldn't mind seeing Cheika switch that up though and give Falou a chance at being more involved in the game. Cant hurt right?

A few of them were a bit shocked though when he wanted them to run onto the ball. They are used to McKibbons service which is not a good thing. Foley can kick as he has shown, might be the best chance to give Lucas the nod, doubt it though especially with us having the break next week.

In reality they will just be in high scoring but close games.
I doubt that what we are seeing is what Cheika has asked for.
I hope it's not.
There is no game sense at all.
You come back to the Foley kick when he had all but run into their fullback. In the state of the game at that point the correct option was to recycle and maintain the pressure until they scored. If they had done that they win the game because that was place to put their foot to the canes' throat.

Tahs biggest problems are at 4,5,6,8,9 & 15
Very disappointed in the back row and loosies other than Hooper. They lack mongrel, athleticism, workrate and consistency. Palu coming back is a solution at 8 as long as he can stay on the field but there is otherwise a lack of depth and talent in the squad for the other positions.
Lucas deserves his chance as the starting 9 and Foley's performances at 10 indicate that he should keep that jersey number. I'd otherwise swap Folau and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) - Folau to 13 and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) to 15.
Disappointing by the Tahs. We had so many linebreaks and other opportunities but we turn over the ball cheaply in the ruck and we make mistakes that lead directly to tries.
With a lower error rate, we'd win games with those sort of opportunities.
There's lot to like about how we run the ball, make breaks and look threatening. It is just consistent execution that we lack.
At least there is a base to work from.

I'd like AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) to start looking for the offload a bit more, he has a great fend and uses it every time, but it also means he locks the ball under his arm and takes the ball to ground..
He is breaking the first tackle often, and gets behind the defensive line which is prime territory to utilise the offload.

We may now have a playing style that can lead to consistently winning games but methinks we don't have the right players in the roster to implement it!

A couple of observations about tonight's match:
1. Surely the time has now come for Lucas to start (it probably came about 3-4 weeks ago). McKibben is clearly the worst half (including Phipps) in the Aussie conference. His passing is woeful, he shovels out the pass regardless of the situation and the one time in the match that he ran was after a line break and he took the ball up the blind side where there were about 4 defenders, was pushed back and turned the ball over. There were a couple of defensive scrums were clearly the Hurricanes had worked out that McKibben was going to pass to Betham coming it off the wing. No plan B from McKibben, just shovel it out to players under pressure.
On the 2 occasions where Lucas has had significant game time, the whole pace of the Waratahs game picks up, he constantly challenges the defence, by kicking and running at the appropriate times thus taking pressure off his ball runners.
2. The Waratahs need to ban the chip kick for the rest of the season. They clearly have no idea when to use the short kick. Twice Foley (who was excellent otherwise) had broken the line and put in a short kick, which was immediately fielded by the Hurricanes who put us back in our own half. Folau also put in a nothing kick towards the end.
I think maybe Folau needs to back himself more with the ball. Perhaps he has been affected by criticism of being tackled in possession too often. I'd be happy if he made line breaks, was tackled and we were able to recycle quick ball. Obviously look for the pass where support players are free.

Thats just trolling surely, if not stupidity.
After watching that game, I think while Tahs fans would be a bit disappointed, not sure I would be completely harsh on team, I actually thought they weren't to bad at all, think Ben Lucas went well when he came on, but to be fair on McKibben it was against a tiring Canes pack, so maybe McKibben would of done some good stuff being that frash at that stage of game. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) was Tahs MOM to me, not sure which Canes was, Savea older and younger were both good, but Reg Goodes had a top game for a young lad being called in at last minute , and work Conrad did at 13 was pretty good to watch.
