I was just thinking..I have never heard so much about 'balancing' a team as I have since moving to Aussie. In NZ, most punters talk about whoever are the best players in their position and that's who we think we should go with. I guess in a simple view of the game, the positions should in themselves 'balance' the team and so if you have the best player in each of the positions, the team theoretically should pretty much be balanced.

If you consider some of the selections under Henry, I'm not sure that description would fit Bullrush. He was very much about trying to balance things.

Look at the Lions tour in 2005 and he really wanted Lauaki in the loose trio. IMO he wasn't the best 8 going around but Henry saw in him a ball runner that we didn't have in any other player in the side. His nick name of Lazyaki was infamous, but yet Henry wanted him for the massive series.

Even before the Lions in 2004, there was the Gibbes/Holah/X Rush loos trio. Were they the best? But all the bases were covered in terms LO option, ball hunting and ball running.

But thereafter we happened tp strike gold in getting probably the 3 best who happened to provide excellent balance also in Collins/McCaw/Rodders.

I also reckon this is what we are going to see, but hoping, praying and wishing that the six are:

  1. Dan Palmer
  2. James Hanson
  3. Hugh McMeniman
  4. Nic White
  5. Quade Cooper
  6. Jesse Mogg

We need this final 6 to be players that can make a difference and bring something else to the table. If Deans thinks we are going to win this series by out boshing and bashing the bosh & bash merchants we are already in trouble.
Each one of your choices brings something that will add to the squad if needed. That is not exactly the 6 I would select but I also wouldn't be at all unhappy if these were them.

I noticed Palmer is in the Country squad as well, so if he can get back on the field, he may get two halves against them to demonstrate his value for the Wallabies

I pay that Qwerty with the exception of Tapuai. If we are talking ideal, Quade would be there. Or if Quade is too much of a risk To'omua, or somebody who plays flyhalf as their regular position.

Since we are not talking ideal the six will likely be something like:

Burgess
Beale
McCalman
Douglas
Mitchell
McCabe

Not sure if he'd get more than 1 half unless he starts and dominates from the word go. The props in that squad were Daley, Henderson (LH's) and Palmer and Holmes...

If we are talking ideal 6, surely it should include Kurtley Beale. Leaving aside his personal problem, he's potentially a series winner for us.

Yes he is in the process of confronting some personal issues but that doesn't mean he cant play great footy. We witnessed that first hand when he returned to the Rebels last month. After that game I think most people were certain he'd be involved in the series. In my view his situation really hasn't changed at all since then. The ARU have made the right decision by handling him with kid gloves, but that doesn't mean he's made of china. It seems like half the posters on this board think they are Doctors, Magistrates and psychiatrists, who "know what's best" for young Kurtley. I'd prefer to leave that assessment to the professionals rather than public opinion.

If the ARU and Kurtley's support network feel he's ready to get out there then I say good luck to him. Moreover, if Kurtley feels good and wants to play, he should. Rugby is obviously a very big part of who he is and, like many athletes, he probably feels best when he's out there performing.

I actually think Beale's current circumstances should have him in great condition going into the Lions Series. He's apparently fit and off the booze, which is a welcome change from the beginning of the 2012 test season.

I think the final 6 will be:

Palmer
Beale
Burgess
McMeniman
Douglas
Mogg

My only change would be to take White instead of Burgess.

I think there will only be 2 spots for Beale/Cooper/McCabe/Mogg... With the frontrunners being Beale and Mogg.

didn't deans say he didn't think Mogg was up to it?

I believe the words used were 'toughness' and it wasn't directly quoted from Deans... it was paraphrased by Mogg himself in an article where he said something along the lines of "Robbie is looking for more toughness from me".

I think they will take
A hooker or prop. I would hazard that it doesnt really matter, because if a fatty goes down with injury they can draft in players no worries. Whoever they take here will be someone they believe is pushing for a spot in the 23 but just didn't quite have room for in the 1st round. My feeling is that it will be palmer. If its a hooker it will be Chibba Hanson

2 players capable of playing around the 4/5/6 area. Douglas as a specialist lock and MMM as a potential bench player (competing with Mowen and Dennis) would be my tip.

A half back. Has to be White, his point of difference right boot could be potentially vital.

An inside back - Cooper or Beale

An Outside back - Beale or Mitchell, though I would have liked Mogg
