Should the 10 whose team is on the goal line pass instead of kick?
"never" is what you said - identifying a single occasion when passing will not always be the best option hardly meets the test of "never".
There is a difference, perhaps subtle, between a complaint that someone's first instinct is not to pass and a rejoinder that identifies an occasion when one would usually choose not to pass.
To make it less subtle - but a less accurate statement of my misgiving - the option of passing is eliminated almost as a matter of course.
This is not the same as suggesting that passing should always be your first option.

With the Australian Schools Champs done and dusted, and the Teams announced, it is time for the focus of this thread to move on towards the upcoming International games for the Australian Schoolboys and Aust A.

Revised Schedule for the Schoolboys as per ASRU Web site.
MON 23 SEPT
Fiji v Country Schools, The Armidale School

FRI 27 SEPT
New Zealand v Fiji, The Armidale School

TUES 1 OCT
Australia A v New Zealand, Knox Grammar School
Australia v Fiji, Knox Grammar School

SAT 5 OCT
Australia A v Fiji, Knox Grammar School
Australia v New Zealand, Knox Grammar School

A usually reliable source has told me that the Sydney chapter of those selected for the above games will have their first campaign meeting on Friday this week.

I assume that the BrisVegas boys will be doing similar.

My snout reckons that there may be some more news/updates following that meeting.

Meanwhile, with the main School Competitions in full swing, the risk of injury remains present, and history tells us that about 4 boys will be required from the shadow selection due to injuries.

At the moment, 23 September-5 October sounds like a long time away, but it will be upon us sooner than we think.

Schoolboy Test "Cap" Watch

I think these are the returning veterans:
Matt SANDELL (St Josephs) 3 caps
Lolo FAKAOSILEA (St Patricks) 4 Caps
Andrew KELLAWAY (Scots) has 2 Caps
Tepai MOEROA (New) has ? caps
Brad WILKIN (Iona) has ? caps
Harry JONES (Barker) has 1 caps

There will be 4 "caps" up for grab on the NH tour (possibly 5 if Irish U18 is considered a cap), and 2 on the inbound tour in Sep/Oct.

The Hugh Roach/Chris F-Sautia record may stand for a while.
Hutchison may give it a nudge if he can stay injury free over the next coupls of years.

Edit: Caps number updated.

The Roach/F-Sautia record may stand for a while.
And CFS missed the tests in his last year of school because of injury.

Breaking records is something more appropriate for senior rugby, but if you want to talk about it: the future record breaker will play Oz School rugby for three years and have both a Pacific tour and a UK/Ireland tour in their career.

Sure have - did you not undertsand what I wrote? His first instinct is Not to pass.
People on here have agreed his passing sense is an issue - to greater or lesser degree. So I'm not alone.
If you think that trying to step your opposite (or 2 or 3 opposites), taking the resultant contact and then trying to pass is a viable way to play once you get out of schoolboys rugby union then I suspect you have been coaching the Wallaby backs - or watching too much loig.
I probably agree with you (and apologise a bit for my over-reaction) the itself is lacking in players that can run good lines and draw and pass.
Watching the Waratahs the other night at times it was embarrassing that they are getting paid.
On Taane, IMO he is quite successful a taking on those 2 defenders and getting good ball to his outside winger. I have been seeing him do it for many years.

And it was last year that Taane thought he could do it against SJC and got drilled over the sideline, into his own bench by Declan O'Donahue, who was in the 2nd row! As he will find this year and the years to come that there is always someone out there that has your measure.

Hutchison is in Yr 11, does that alter the number of caps?

Here's me thinking 16 year old = Year 10 and a possible 3 years in Schoolboy Gold.
If Hutchison has only this year and one more year of schooling to go (assuming no Pathways), then he may get around 6-8 caps, and not pose a threat to the record.

I believe there are 5 "caps" available on the UK Tour. The Irish U18 game is highlighted on the ASRU website similar to the other Tests and games against National U18 teams have had Test status on previous UK Tours even when the National Schools team has also been played.

Jones has 1 cap and Kellaway has 2 (possibly 3 as was on bench v NZ but didn't get on)

Thanks GTPIH. I have updated the OP.

I think a "cap" is only awarded if the player takes the field. Making "the Bench" does not qualify as a cap.
Can anyone clarify?

Good afternoon of rugby, the first game starts at 3.00, so the main game may finish under lights, anyone remember what early October is like?

Just another thought, these dates are 4 weeks+ after the end of the GPS comp and probably longer for some other boys, there's a further challenge for the coaching staff!

HSC exams day 1 in NSW is 14 October. I presume that similar arrangements and timings exist for the boys from the other states.

While Aust Schoolboys representation can get you an extra 5 points on your ATAR score depending on the institution, some of the boys may be ( or should be) a little distracted in the build up to the Tests, especially when they go into residential camp for the Tests.

Kellaway started v Tonga at St. Marys

Was named to start against Fiji and probably played but team lists on the internet are not reliable (eg Tuttle named to start v NZ and listed on the internet still, but did not play because of tonsilitis - Moeroa started.)

Kellaway not named in 23 v Samoa.

On bench v NZ but did not play, if I remember correctly.

He was so dominate at the recent Nationals, it still surprises me that he was not our No#1 fullback pick last year? or is it just my rosecolouredNSW glasses.
