do you want to see how dumb we are in rugby. visit the sports on foxtel site.
http://www.foxtel.com.au/whats-on/sport/default.htm

nrl is on foxtel. nrl is on fta.
afl is on foxtel. afl is on fta.
Super Rugby/nrc on foxtel. Super Rugby/nrc is NOT on fta.

rugby is the odd one out with fta and talk of immediate returns seems like a flawed and short sighted strategy. deteriorates medium term profits. wouldn't want to be a shareholder.

foxtel core goal is to increase subscriptions. usa subscriptions are at 90%. australia is an embarassing 30%. foxtel's goal is to lift subscriptions to 50%. that is on the public record. previously there goal was much more ambitious.

to increase subscriptions they need reasons for people to subscribe. sport is a big reason. rugby can be an influencing factor. along with other codes shown live. but this influence will only grow if foxtel have the brains to take rugby to the masses. at any rate, foxtel should be bending over backwards to show they will "build the health of the code".

power in rugby's hands. broadcast rights for rugby on the horizon.

This argument has been had on this site 1000 times so I'm not going to railroad the NRC discussion on the topic of Super Rugby exclusive broadcast right, there are a number of other threads relevant to this discussion...

The topic of the NRC stands, rugby union was lucky to get $1.5million for 2 years, during the ARC the ARU was actually paying $200'000/annum to the ABC to offset the broadcast costs. There are also the costs of actually broadcasting and editing the game, which depending on the number of cameras and facilities at the stadium can range from $50'000/game for low budget events up to $750'000/game which we see at events like State of Origin and AFL GF's. So on-top of the cost paid to the ARU, Foxtel will also be spending around $1-2million in production throughout the year, this is also the reason they have committed to broadcasting one game per round.

Foxtel has paid $1.5million and thus owns the exclusive rights, they aren't going to then hand them over to FTA channels because us rugby union fans feel that it would be better for the game if they did.

I think this is a pretty key comment from Pulver:
“Kurtley is a Randwick boy, and Izzy is a Uni boy, however, in this competition we have the capacity to allocate the Wallabies to given teams,” Pulver said.

So its unlikely that any of the Wallabies will actually play in this tournament, but for the purpose of drumming up publicity, it makes perfect sense to have Izzy and Kurtley as the poster children for the Greater Western Sydney team.

my lady with headgear, this is going round in circles. lets cut to the chase. do you think rugby would be more sustainable (nrc, Super Rugby) with a combined Super Rugby-nrc contract that shows a number of fta games like successful afl/nrl codes do? if so, how do we make this happen?

Gold. What Randwick Village Club did the Randwick boy play for?
Perhaps the same one that Campo played for back in Queanbeyan?

How many games has Izzy played for Uni to qualify as a Uni Boy?

you find a benefactor who is willing to cover the multi-million loss that the ARU would face by switching from Foxtel exclusitivity to FTA......

Extremely disappointed by this. The teams are all just a giant mess of club affiliations linked together with shit names and the the non nsw/Qld teams just have shit names and weak links to the super rugby sides that have already developed the local connections to fans and clubs.

It should have been:
Perth Force
Melbourne Rebels
Canberra Brumbies
Brisbane City
West Brisbane/Ipswich
North Sydney Rays
Western Sydney rams
Sydney City
Newcastle or Wollongong

This is Just going to be another full plastic comp with empty seats everywhere and a drain on resources while we waste our time with super rugby and it's current expansion fantasies.

melbourne rising is actually a reference to the development side that has existed since the super rugby rebels were born, so theres a link there. Vikings are called vikings because of the powerhouse club from the John I Dent cup....

Noticed this doing the rounds - With all the current debate about ref's and ideas been thrown about for the NRC:

http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/Two-refs-for-Varsity-Cup-games-20131114

How it works: http://www.sarugbymag.co.za/blog/details/dual-ref-systems-been-successful

Would it work and if so at what levels?

Would it be possible to adapt a similar set up to help with the training and development of new referees at the lower levels by having they work in tandem with a mentor referee? It potentially provides a method to give them experience and develop confidence but with a bit of a safety net.

Maybe lessen the roll to start with to offsides etc?

Would this potentially bring in some consistency and align interpretations with two referee's working in close proximity?

I know that it's the name of the feeder team and maybe a couple of diehards will as well, the rest of the state and a large amount of rebel support won't and will agree in thinking its a stupid name. There would have been nothing wrong in just continuing the rebels brand into the NRC.

I also am aware that tuggeranong Vikings are a stakeholder in the Canberra side but seriously, when the hell has there ever been Vikings or pirates for that matter in Australia, let alone Canberra. Again, there would have been nothing wrong to just keep the Brumbies name going into the ARC

Why not the Canberra Griffins, after good ol' Wally B-Griffin who had the idea to dig a pond in the middle of the town back in the olden days?

I disagree and believe using Rebels, Brumbies and force would infringe SANZAR rights and possible trademarks.

Canberra

1. JP Smith
2. Siliva
3. R Smith
4. Power
5. Carter
6. Smiler
7. Butler
8. Auelua
9. Hoffman
10. Cronje
11. Coleman
12. Tatekawa
13. A Smith
14. Rathbone
15. Mogg

16. ?

East Coast Aces

Johnnie Wallace (23)
NRL head of strategy and former interm boss Shane Mattiske has resigned. It would be a good coup to bring him into the NRC fold, His knowledge and brain power could surely be used.

Why are you forcing Griffins or Kookaburra on Canberra team I am happy with UC/Vikings/ACT Rugby combo. The Vikings is the Vikings group of Clubs not necessarily the JID team. The Vikings were the sponsors for the ACT Shute Shield and Brisbane Premiership team and sponsors in ARC. Also there is supposed to be a board for this combo.
