It is that mateship and fun that can be killed by the points system.

Consider 4 boys who have been at a fancy Private School since year 7. Before that all 4 played for 4 different junior village club districts, as happens in schools that draw kids from all over Sydney. They have become best of mates on the back of their love for rugby, and having been in the A's all their way through school, together in in rep programmes, JGS/NGS etc. In the final year of school, all 4 make NSW I, II or Combined States, and one of them is Aust Schoolboy, with another making Aust A. Being rugby rockstars, spending a lot of time in each others company in rugby settings, they are obviously keen to stay together as they transition into Colts and Grade.

They haven't played any junior rugby to attract discount for local, or haven't been moonlighting in colts in Yr 11 or Yr 12 to get loyalty discounts.

These four lads represent 20 points to their receiving Colts club. If they go to Colts 1, the other 11 players in the run on must total 20 points or less (average of 2 pp). They can not go to Colts 2 as a package. In this instance 11 players must average < 1 point, and under new rulings, every player is worth a minimum or 1 point.

Our four examples are a liability to the receiving club (to a degree), and the only effective way to deal with them "bust them up" and promote some to Grade 3's or 4's, and spread the others across Colts 1 and 2. With Grade and Colts trainins and playing at different locations and timings, the friendship can get busted up.

Easts 1st colts seem to be a bit of a dark horse this year! No big names in the team. Pauli Taumoepaeu seems to have crafted a team big on heart, without the heroes!

Norths v uni - All games were cracking displays of both running rugby and defense. Threes went to the students in a close one 29-22, with uni only securing the win in the final 8 minutes, with 2 quick tries.
The twos was a ding dong battle, the students scoring within first 5 minutes, but no points after that. The students open winger must be quicker than usain bolt, gees hes quick, but the norths boys had more go forward, and after working out they go to the winger often, shut him down early.
Ones was a try fest, and a great display of running rugby - 7 tries to six. Both teams played really well, but both need to work on one on one defense. Set piece for students was formidible, especially lineouts, but handling errors and sealing the ball at breakdown cost them.
I must say, some pedantic refereeing hurt the continuity in both 2's and 1's. Let the game flow gents. I would not like to be gordon next week as the students will want to rectify this result, and we will see if this give norths the leg up they need to more wins.

The Uni winger was Matthew Narracott who was returning from injury for his first game of the season . By rugby standards he is extremely quick but sadly only half as tall as UB. He was a bit rusty yesterday but will benefit from match play.

As for Norths, weren't they fantastic. Keen contests in 2nd and 3rd colts was expected but the performance from Norths 1st colts was a surprise based on the ladder.
Didn't see 3rds but after match comments from Uni players suggest it was a great game which could have gone either way .

2nd colts , well the catch and pass skills of Uni were poor but take nothing away from Norths who thoroughly deserved the win . They totally outplayed Uni.

1st colts saw an effort from Norths which completely belied their ladder position. Uni may be doing extras in the classroom this week instead of the gym. On four occasions Norths scored off first phase ball from scrums in the red zone. Three of these came from blind side moves off the scrum where Uni simply couldn't count numbers . You would think after the first effort Uni would have adapted , not so. The Norths scrum was fantastic leading a terrific team effort. Well done lads.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the afternoon was the post match gathering at the pub across the road!!
In all, a great afternoon hosted by NORTHS

^^^ Mostly from Grade teams (Pulver, Stewart, Vaux) + Cam Skelton selected for Samoa U20's.

Tomas Robertson is a regular Colts player IIRC.

Credit to the Norths Teams/Club. They have recruited/retained well over the last few years.

Their campaign to date seems to have been one where they have just not clicked.

Seems as it they did yesterday.

As someone said above, I feel for Gordon next week. Norths have done then no favours.

Narracott won Uni the GF last year - player of the game. Very, very quick and talented. I have to agree a bit on the small side though
