George Whitelock off to Japan. Story on stuff.co.nz together with this:

"Jimmy Cowan is returning to New Zealand this month and has indicated to English media he could line up in the National Provincial Championship with the hope of cracking Super Rugby again"

And this:

"Nonu and Weepu are both off franchise contract at the end of the year and have made no secret of their desire to return to their spiritual home in Wellington. Many believe that with Mark Hammett out of the picture from the end of this season, the major impediment to that happening has now been removed."

Cowan is woeful atm. No way someone will pick him up.

He's been a great player, there's no reason he couldn't get back to being an OKAY player with buckets of experience.

In rugby we don't know how to get the best out of veterans. Basketball, for example, is great at managing veterans and getting the best out of them. In rugby we just don't do it well.

Kieran Read out of England test with ongoing concussion problems, About as big a blow as you could get to the ABs, and worrying long term.

Sam Cane out of England series with a knee injury, replaced by Matt Todd.
Savea out of next game, probably replaced by Corey Jane. (Dagg FB, Ben Smith other wing)

Hansen is fooling no one by saying Read's issues aren't concerning. It happened 6 weeks ago.

Is Kieran Read the next Stewie Devine or Elton Flatley, to be forced out of the game due to concussion issues?

Sounds like he needs a damn good break, until well after the Tahs v Cru Souper Rugby Final at ANZ Stadium this year, possibly until after RWC 2015.

You certainly couldn't see any ill effects of concussion in his return against the Force.

Maybe he's having similar problems to Barnes a couple of years ago with footballers migraine or whatever it was.

Isn't that part of the problem @Braveheart?

The symptoms don't necessarily manifest themselves in a physical sense, but the risk of potential long term damage remains.

If it is similar to the issues that Archie's Dad had with Footballers Migrane, then IIRC he was knocked off his bar stool for a long time before he was right to go again at 100% on the footy field.

Clearly there must be some symptoms presenting themselves otherwise Read wouldn't be having another break.

Feeling absolutely sick in my guts at the thought of this. Feeling dismal. The incumbent IRB player of the year has to retire? The All Blacks captain elect? WFT. Really, he's still just a kid. WhFT does he do next?

Locking this shit up.

No argument there Qwerty. His Barbarians game against the Poms last weekend was an absolute shocker, shit passing, turnovers, poor kicking etc etc.
He'd struggle to make an ITM team at the moment, and has my show of getting a soup gig.

I can live with Kaino at 8 for as long as it takes for KR's head to get sorted: his health has to take priority over short- to medium-term considerations incl RWC if need be. I can live with Todd for Cane, for mine they're very much Ford & Holden - some like one, some the other but there's really fuckall between them. I can even live with Dagg & Jane OR Smith, but not all 3 at once, we need to replace one Bus with another, even if it's a 30-seater instead've a 40.

Kaino at 8/Mccaw/Messam sounds fine on paper but the loosies have misfired previously when the combo isnt sussed out (a scavenger/a grunter/ a wide ranger?) eg, Mccaw/Collins/Soialo worked a treat yet some other combos have experienced asymetrical discombobulation in the iHomo style.

One of my favourite words, discombobulation. I just never expected to see it in a rugby forum. Thank you.

I expect McAwesome, Arkansas (as in Little Rock, geddit) & the chief Chief will job-share the grunt-work, link-work & wide-channel work & it'll be enough v Poms B but you're right we may need to rethink come the Bled & Sethfrickens.

oooh Poms B, dunno about that, the big C word, wouldnt surprise me too much to see the Pomgolians roll NZ in the first one. NZ always rusty first up, and despite being unbeaten last season it wasnt that flash. Plus wouldnt surprise me if some of these blokes have been reading their own press from the last couple of years and think they just have to rock up on the night, combination-less, and expect it to click.

That is such sad news about Read.
He is a fantastic player and from what I hear back from NZ, an even better person outside of rugby.
Good luck to him and hopefully things turn out well.

I've always found it odd how little knowledge pro players have of other players. He must seriously not watch any rugby outside SH.

Gotta be a wind-up surely? He's played against a lot of them hasn't he?
The twitterverse was aghast naturally, but only seems to have been reported in the Guardian, nothing in the Times or Telegraph. Hasn't even made the NZ Herald.

Edit: Found this later in the day-In perhaps the strongest indictment yet of the weakness of the England squad that has travelled to New Zealand for the summer tour, Brodie Retallick, the All Blacks’ lock, has admitted he cannot name any of the visitors’ players.(
