Brekky on George St, waitress sees the fern on wifey's t-shirt & asks if we're going to the game. Yes, says wifey. I don't watch much rugby, says waitress, but I do like Jonathan Thurston. That's next week, says I, tonight it's All Blacks v Wallabies. Blank stare. Rugby UNION. Blank stare. Smile. Can I take your order now? I know this is a League town but c'mon.

To be fair Thurston is a pretty astute selection. He's closer to Dan Carter than any current wallaby.

Australia And Recent Events

I admire the confidence and positivity amongst you Aussies. Here in Saffaland most would be pessimistic and that is a great tribute to you guys.

Of course, each nation's psyche is different and that's why I have such interest in this game.

We all know the ability of the All Blacks, particularly after a loss. A draw against the Wallabies depriving them of a 1st tier record of international games won in a row. The All Blacks come off a loss, already 2 games worse than 2013. Having never lost 2 games in a row under Hanson's tenure they'll bounce back.

What's of more interest is the unknown. The Wallabies don't lack talent. You come off a loss against Argentina and will be remembered as the first team to lose to Argentina in the RC for all time. The opposite is true for Argentina.

You endured heavy criticism in all areas off the field, including a shocking TMO decision recently.

Conflicting reports and a lot of ambiguity has come from the media and sources within the squad.

Therefore, you could win. This is a typical opportunity to truly harness the "Backs-to-the-Wall" principle.

Recessions usually have a sudden - bullish, end.

On New Zealand (and England)

They'll be fired up, be sure of that. I still think their main goal from here-on for the year is beating England. They know they have Australia's number 9 times out of 10. England, on the other hand, have been giving them some trouble in recent times.

England had one of their most respectable tours of NZ in years.

Englad will also give their all to beat SA before the RWC since they last won a game against SA in 2006. Their first game against NZ will give them the best possible preparation to defeat the Springboks in the following game.

Preceding Events And The Future

It is a sin looking at a game for being just that in Test Rugby. Previous events and the future should be taken into consideration. Teams evolve and if you have an idea where they are trying to head, you'll have a better chance of understanding their current goals.

All things should be looked at from the viewpoint of where management sees the team in a year.

I believe this to be true regardless of whether it's the lead-up to a RWC or not.

Australia gaining a win here will make it a 4-way race and not a 3-way race for the William Webb Ellis.

Thow in France for good measure beacuse everyone knows they'll be a thorn next year regardless of the lead-up.

Yes, I don't think Ireland are a threat for the traditional 5 of NZ, SA, AUS, ENG, & FRA next year in a KO match.

Argentina can provide some upsets but the truth is Wales an Ireland are also strong nations currently. I'd put them in the same league.

Scotland, Italy and the Pacific Nations could provide some very good games and one or two of them may spring a surprise and go further, but it is still nothing for the big 5.

What It Could Be

Australia could win this game. What would that mean?

It means the Wallabies would host the Springboks in Brisbane next year. Both teams will have come off a victory over the All Blacks.

The Wallabies will want to make ammends for the very dissappointing loss of 2013. A victory here for the Wallabies will give them a huge mental edge if they are to face the Springboks in the QF of the RWC. In fact, the Wallabies could very well top their group next year and have England face SA in the QF instead.

Yeah, I don't think Wales will make it.

Good luck to both proponents this weekend.

My suggestion for a pre-match announcement on the PA system at Suncorp Stadium:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we regret to advise, that due to financial constraints, security issues, and technical difficulties, we are unable to allow the Haka to be performed tonight. The New Zealand National Anthem will still be performed in two languages, as normal".
That should help to screw up the minds of the All Blacks, who usually control the pre-match "formalities"!!

Yeah, cos dissing the haka has worked out so well for so many people over the years....... And besides, there'll be 10,000+ in the stands to stand in if it should come to that.

That would be great theatre. AB's would probably run back down the f**kin' tunnel and do it for each other in the dressing room!

Dunno why other sides are obligated to "respect" the haka. I suppose its one of the traditions and an "honour" to face it and all that David Copperfield Cronenberg bullshit but really, fuck that. If they're allowed to try and fuck with your head pre-match, you should have licence to reciprocate.
  • Do a Campo and just wander off.
  • Do your own silly little impromptu haka while pointing and giggling with your mates.
  • Take yer shirt off and flash the guns
  • Blow kisses
  • run around like crazed headless chooks throwing little "respectful" maori protocol tufts of grass up into the air.

i couldnt give two shits what the opposition do during the haka and i dont think theres anything thats dispresectful too it, to my mind its for us and its bugging me ti hear the sky commentators wank on about respecting it.
do what you want
run around like campo
get in our faces
pull a brown eye

Respecting the haka is stupid and creates this environment where one side appears to be in awe of the other. I can't possibly figure out why you would want to do it. Go into the huddle, kick the ball around, have a drink, do whatever you want.

As if the ABs can get anymore motivated or fired up than they are already. FFS they win 9 tests out of 10 when the oppo "respects" the haka, just how much better can they possibly get?

I love how hardly anyone respects form considering a pile of huge reff blunders and CLOSE calls. This rugbyC could look totally diff if not for a first game the wallabies dominated the ABs......another the wallabies were ripped off by a yellow card nazi wich was extremely disgusting reff display and the fact that we did beat the boks. Not to mention the huge rip off the argies received when leading the ABs aswell.
Take into account the million diff captains, wings, centres, 9 and 10s and the back row disruptions the wallabies have endured.....I think no mater what happens this game, nothing short of another cricket score would leave the wallabies relatively happy with their own performances. But not the reffs or the media or half the fans around here either.

I think theyve done far better then most credit them.

Wifey & I are splurging a fair bit on this - tickets $360, room & car park $200 (fuck trying to get back to Logan post-match, too many drunks & druggies on the train, too long a wait for a cab esp given there's 11 in our group & double fuck being the sober driver), prob $250 each for food & beverage - so I don't wanna see an AB walkover, I wanna see the Wobs put their off-field shit behind them, dig in Galipolli/ Khe Sahn styles & give us a match to remember (but lose).

Thumbs up.

,,,,,,,,,

It's also my 30th on Saturday so it is only fair that they win this one for me!

I've had a chat with some of the AB's, BDA, and they said they're going to throw the game for you to make it a memorable birthday.
