I believe a decision was taken a couple of years ago that Luke Burgess was eligible to play immediately after signing a Super contract even though he wasn't due to start playing Super rugby until the following year.

Like you, I think it it just the status quo.

Yes when Mumm signed it was announced he was eligible for the RWC too. Not sure why the ARU emphasised this 'new' policy.

Both would be reasonable back ups

Mitchell as back up 15

Giteau as back up 12

Agreed - a number of people are assessing the individual rather than the team and balance.

Yes and both have some versatility as well which is invaluable if we wanted to use a forwarded dominated bench.

Do we see Git's being brought out for at least a look at by Chekia before the cup ?

I think so, I wouldn't have change the rules to get him in (I don't believe the ARU did it for that reason either), but now that he's available I think you take a look at him during the Rugby Championship. He was named the best player in Europe so he should serve as a good test case to see weather NH form should be worth anything going forward. I don't think he starts initially, get him back to learn the systems and have a look at training, maybe playing off the bench then if it goes well give him a crack against the argies.

He should probably be called over for no other reason than to piss off Boudjellal and show him we're going to use reg 9 and maybe he should think twice before poaching aussies. ;)

Yeah, I actually see 15 cover as a current weakness and Mitchell could solve that

Dunno, I read 7 years and 60 test caps.

Does allow many too make the squad possibly Gits as the only.. Smith but really Hooper, Poey and Gill should be looked at first..

Sent from my D6503 using Forum Fiend v1.3.1.

You are right. We have a lot of depth at the openside with Poey, Hooper and Gill. Why do people are talking about George Smith? I love him but Wallabies don't need him for the next WC

Does Beale provide cover for both those positions? Plus goal kicking? If so, then I really can't see Cheika picking Gitts or Mitchell.
Not sure which is the best option, TBH my opinion of Beale is always going to be marred, so someone less anti him might be better giving their opinion :)

I see both as upgrades on Beale, Beale has struggled under the high ball for a while and isn't a good enough defender to defend at 12 against a good side.

I also don't like how Beale's upright running gets smashed against good defenses and then he turns into a sideways sprinter

Giteau is definitely a chance at being in the RWC squad and will be competing with the likes of Beale and Leali'ifano for one of the last spots.

I don't see Mitchell as being in the frame at all. I think we'll potentially only see one specialist winger picked for the RWC squad and we'll pick two or three of the more versatile players like JOC (James O'Connor), AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) and Horne to cover wing as well. I already see Cummins and Tomane missing out on the RWC with Speight the only specialist wing picked.

to my mind, mitchell is zero chance of being selected. the wing stocks are deep enough with speight, tomane, badger, and JOC (James O'Connor). he certainly was a greater player, but i haven't seen or read anythign to suggest he's anywhere near the form he once was or where giteau currently is.
i think gits is the only current overseas player that will make it.
personally i think the policy is good for our props heading over that qualify. kepu will benefit from the intensity of hte scrumming up north. i hope this new change entices hugh pyle back when his contract expires.
going forward, we can still select palu, genia, cooper if they reach the cap requirement. unless he finds new form, horwill is done at wallaby level, and of course AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) which is great cause at 100+ caps, surely you should be allowed to keep playing if you're good enough!

One of them will be in the squad without a doubt. Otherwise they wouldn't have made the changes.

Giteau the most likely.

I'm thinking, possible all 3 might be brought out for an extended squad, before the WC. Except I think Smith might just retire from international rugby again.. No one's asked him if he wants to bother. Didn't he think of playing 7's for Samoa.

Yeh Mitchell was awesome in his prime but from memory he'd already started to wane by the time he left Australia.

We can debate the relevant strength of the NH comps, but I think its pretty much universally agreed that the quality of the outside backs in Super Rugby is much better. JOC (James O'Connor), Speight, Tomane, Horne and Cummins are all in the top-echelon. I doubt Mitchell comes close these days.

Gits seems the most logical choice, because he's killing it up North and we're a little shaky on depth at 10/12. He's the only one of the newly available players I would put in the squad.

may have made the changes in preparation for next years exodus,

Why in the world would Cheika even consider Smith with the options that we have at flanker?

Slim got it in 1, because his George Smith, I'm not saying he will make the squad and I guess it's a fair call to say we have Hooper, Poey and Gill. But at the same time, if George Smith is at his best, he shades all 3 of them IMO..

Now it's probably a moot point as Im not sure Smith would want to come back..
