Interestingly on this point there has been talk of the CAS competition reverting back to the one round system. Many and I mean many of the Cranbrook, Aloysius and Trinity lower grades are unable to match up to the stronger schools of Waverley, Barker and Knox. The 15B grade for example Waverley and Knox played each 4 times in a 10 round competition if I am not mistaken. While there is still rugby depth at these schools there players appear to be getting weaker, creating havoc for scheduling. It is a shame to see this situation developing as the home and away format is very exciting and gives players great opportunities to play at other grounds as well at home.

This was always one of the fatal flaws in the 2 round competition - the lower teams at the weaker schools having to front up twice for a beating. As I've been saying on the ISA thread, we need to be careful that we don't end up with less boys playing more games - I'd prefer to have more boys playing less games.

Time for a quick census. How many Rugby teams at each of the AAGPS Schools?

Based on @Loose Carry post @#2842 and info from @Quick Hands in another thread, is the following correct?
St Josephs - 42 (13 Open XV, 7 x U16, 7 x U15, 7 x U14, 8 x U13)
St Ignatius - 35 (9,6,7,6,7)
Shore - 30 (8,5,5,5,7)
Scots College 30 (7,6,3*,8,6) *Glengarry impact
The Kings School - 29 (10,4,5,4,6)
Newington College - 22 (6,2,4,5,5)
Sydney Grammar - 13 (3,2,2,3,3)
Sydney Boys High School - 10 (2,2,2,2,2)
The Armidale School - 11 (3,2,2,2,2)

225 teams (counting an extra 3 teams for the Scots U15's at Glengarry) of 18 players each (to allow for Team Rehab and bench) is approximately 4000 Rugby players in the AAGPS.

Assume 1/2 the numbers of the players in the opens teams are in Year 12, there are approximately 550 players graduating from the AAGPS Rugby Programme that "could" be interested in playing Colts with Subbies or Shute Shield clubs each year.

I wonder, somewhat rhetorically, how many play rugby after school. I'd imagine that not too many in the 6th XV or lower XV's end up in Shute Shield Colts.

Well spotted!! But just for the record, the try was scored by Atiola......and no-one deserved to score a match-winning try more than this fantastic young bloke - hopefully we'll see him playing Colts somewhere next year!

TIPPING COMP FINAL

So 10 rounds of great rugby has come and gone, Here are the die hards who regularly tipped.

The final 2 rounds really did sort the sheep from the goats. Some didn't like the Power tipping, and others thrived on challenge of the seconds and thirds.

We have an OUTRIGHT winner, and a very worthy one at that. Rich_E congratulations. Not only are you very good at writing up games and Season reviews and the like, you must have a bit of an idea of who can play rugby, and what teams will win. A perfect round in the last saw Rich pip the very reliable and usual front runner Mr Jarse.

Nectophiliac who was well in contention couldn't handle the power tipping concept, and with the line in sight faded badly back in the field. (The vets were attending at last report, and grim fears are held about Nectos future)

Wristman, pulled a perfect round 10 and made a massive move on the leaders to get a podium finish. Equal 2nd with Mr Jarse.

In keeping with tradition no Third place is awarded.

Yours truly had an appalling run at that tipping, and took the spoon. Ok with that this year, next year things will be very different

ISA Rugby Teams = 143 (37,25,25,28,28) @ 18 per team is approximately 2574 Rugby participants
ISA Soccer Teams = 112 (28,19,19,22,24) @ 14 per team is approximately 1568 Soccer participants

CAS Rugby Teams = 125 (33,20,22,23,27) @ 18 players per team is approximately 2250 Rugby participants
CAS Soccer Teams = 170 (43,29,30,35,33) @ 14 players per team is approximately 2380 Soccer participants

I wonder how many players we had 10 years ago across the schools? I suspect that numbers would be down everywhere (even at Joeys). IIRC some schools used to go down to Ks in the 13s/14s and the bigger boarding schools would have Hs in 16s.

In the mid 80s Joeys would field 50 teams in the years prior to the introduction of Soccer.

Cheers Azzuri, I do agree it needs all 3 grades to make it really interesting.

There is a fair bit of work in in, trawling through posts & collating it all.

I was going to suggest the fairies (sorry I mean INTERNET CONSTRUCTS) at G&G might be able to make a link and run it a bit more formally. This way we could all enter our own tips and everyone see the table live all the time. Rather than waiting for me.

Mr Cyclopath is that idea you guys could do?

Nice post Beard. Fantastic example of how a highlight video should be done, it even included some of sidesteppa's footage! The highlights for other schools (View, Grammar, Scots) by Joeyriverrocks1 are far too short, and half of them are just shots of the crowd/the boys training anyway.

It's also well balanced - no sole player gets an excessive amount of footage, but there's some from 1-15.

so with the cobwebs gathering in here you're all forced to get your lawns up to scratch or just keep refreshing your G&G browser in the hope that Newington & Scots decided to have a playoff to see who gets to keep the shield in the trophy cabinet...

here's some highlights of the Joeys 3rds for 2015 put together by one of the boys, not all their games got recorded so apologise to some of the schools in advance, but it does give a great taste of the brand of rugby they played this season.

Just saw the blog on the GPS Special Awards, and couldn't resist a parting shot at the selectors before departing to watch cricket over the summer.

In the immortal words of John McEnroe.....'You cannot be serious!!!!'

How does Opeti Helu rate as the first choice for loose-head prop when he wasn't even the best prop (tight-head or loose-head) at Newington, let alone the GPS competition? Jacob Storey is a better scrummager, a better defender, better at the break-down, and can play for a full 70 mins. Helu required intensive work to raise him to the level of 'adequate' scrummager, and his fitness and poor work rate limited his effectiveness to the first 35 mins of each game, at best. On the other hand, while Horton is a star and deserves to be in anyone's 1st XV, his versatility means that he could slot into prop, and thereby provide an opening for Teu Atiola at hooker - Atiola is a high work-rate, high-impact player and would surely have to be one of the first front-rowers picked in any composite school team.

- Agreed, Atiola should've been there over Helu.

Some other personal thoughts:

- I also don't fully agree with the inclusion of McGregor and Wright, given that both missed a lot of the season due to injury.

- England needs to be there.

- Jaffer-Williams at 11

- Pietsch definitely over Bragg for MVP

- Horton, Murray even Strang would be better picks over Smith for Best & Fairest

- If they're basing it off form, Loga-Tarogi's season wasn't great.
