NSW AAGPS Rugby 2016

After an injury to Oscar Halbmeyer in training yesterday which will see him out for at least two weeks. Son of former Penrith Panthers player Trent Waterhouse's son Henry Waterhouse will be moving up into Sydney Grammars 1sts and play either 13 or 11.

sometimes you have to laugh .... I heard Joeys were now allowing golf as a winter sport

only thing is it starts at 5:45 am ... that is a good 1 hour before sunrise!

so yes you can play golf, but it will be in the dark, and it doesn't excuse you from rugby attendance for the rest of the day

the rugby refereeing at Joeys fixtures is getting a bad reputation ... for it's bias-ness (sic)

why do they bother ....they will win all and sundry anyway

anyway as I tell my sons ... it is not just who wins on the scoreboard

at the end of the game ask yourself, who was the most courageous, who played the most as a team ,showed the referee the most respect, played in the best spirit, etc etc

invariably Joeys will be the better team across every aspect of the game ... but if the ref was your 16th player, bit of a hollow victory

AAGPS TEAM OF THE WEEK

I see someone on the CAS thread doing a CAS team of the week. Probably a futile exercise with no real purpose, but for the sake of discussion I have attempted to make up a team solely from the Honorable mentions in the G&G Match reports. So have to move a few positions around and I do appear to be 1 Prop short.

I have used 3 names from each school. Some reports mentioned more than 3 so I had to pick who I thought were the best 3 according to the report.

Interesting to see nearly all the backrowers came from winning sides.

Golf has been around for a while. Also AFL has now started.

Sometimes your comments are very silly SDW. Having watched many games over the years, it always looks pretty even and would say goes against Joeys because of how they play. Maybe if you could produce some penalty count stats it would be more compelling evidence.

1. Kings at home should be stronger, although predict a close game. A draw wouldn't surprise me.
2. Joeys over Shore but a close game. Think Joeys forwards will be more effective this week and the backs handling errors will be reduced (hopefully).
3. Riverview look strong through forwards and have quick (and big) backs.

Newington host Riverview in Round 2 in what shapes as another chapter in what I reckon is an epic recent rivalry. (I 'fess to not being around since the 1890's Az, so you'll have to forgive me about the "recent" reference.)

Few will forget the drama at Stanmore in the final Round last year, with Newington snatching a last gasp, come from behind, victory to share the spoils of the main silverware with Scots. And before that, in Round 5 out at Lane Cove, with only 2 points separating the teams with just 2' remaining, in a high scoring affair, before the Wyvern put the Blue & White to the sword that day. Arguably , they were the 2 best matches of last Season, both of them hard fought to the death, free-wheeling, first rate joys of schoolboy Rugby. A treat, really.

These 2 teams renew friendly(?) hostilities on Saturday at Stanmore in what I can't help but feel will be an early pointer to this Season's eventual outcome.

View will bring a tonne of confidence with them after their emotional win last week, and there's a sufficiently goodly number of them that played in the last Season, that even without Princess Leah cheering from the sidelines, the power of "redemption" will be strong in their force.

Those lucky enough to get out there, even sans the pies worthy enough to attract Azzuri's keen attention, should be rewarded with a fine game amongst equals.

If View wins away from home again, and frankly, I expect they will, though not by terribly many, they will justifiably have not just bragging rights, but early favouritism for this year's silverware - shared or alone.

I won't be able to be in 2 places at once, so will rely on reports coming in from attendees. If @Sidesteppa can be persuaded or bribed![U/] to spectate with his trusty HighDef lens, I for one will be very grateful.

There was a twitter last night on the GPS Writers channel that the great man, @LG, had pulled off somewhat of minor coup to have another great man, John Eales, be a backup correspondent on the game for the GPS Blog for the New v View game. But LG, powerful as he may be in his space, disabused us of the notion. Can only say, that woulda 'bin speshhh, so LG, go sort it out, mate.

Every time I played joey's (quite a while ago now) I always felt like we were 'playing against 16'. But after many years of watching them I've come to realise it more like 17. Nah. Kidding. Ive realised that they were just better drilled than us. While we won a few against them, they just had this edge in the core skills.

Couldnt agree more, both games last year were absolute belter and although it doesnt and will never compare to the battle of the Catholics it defiantly is building into a a series of games that always are high scoring and evenly matched. Riverview showed great poise last week and showed they have that 'premiership' mentally, but as round 1 has shown us this year is a very even comp where all 5 teams (not shore) can win this year. Shore v Scots was an 'honourable' defeat if that is possible and shows that this year they might be able to get some scalps. Scots on the other hand got the job done but really need to turn it up if they want to get the W against an experienced and classy side in Kings. Joeys and Newington fans i would not panic at all after first game losses, it is a long season and very close competition this year and as we saw from Scots last year after a humble 1st game loss still is possible to take the goods. To underestimate Joeys and in particular Newington would be beyond foolish. Newington still awaiting there #10 from last year who played GPS 2nds and they have won 4 of the last 6 preimerships so Brad Gill and co know what hustobedun.

Kings to continue there early season good form and at home it will take quite the effort from scots to pull out a victory. Kings by 12

Newington and Riverview will be the game of the week will both teams evenly matched but I think every week the new #10 Turner is playing the better he will get and as will the team. New by 5 in a nail bitter

Joeys and Shore should be a Win for joeys but shore showed last week they will not be pushovers this year, although joeys will outclass them. Joeys by 15.

Goodluck to all teams this week I would love to go watch the NVI game but am on a fishing trip in the Murray river, wish me luck!

And even if you can, it doesn't imply bias, just that one side infringed more than the other. You said the same after the Newington v Waverley game, implying the ref was unfairly penalising Waverley in the scrums all the time. The ref called it fairly. Very tedious to hear constant wingeing about refs.

Absolutely no flies on New this year. Again. They are solid across the park. Dismiss them at your peril.

Quality is still there maybe not as good but all depends on how they come together. Piroddi and Mannix were great players last year driving that tight five unfortunately #5 Piroddi did have some 'injuries' and missed some vital minutes. #coachesfault

I believe Newington will triumph in this encounter. An unlucky loss to Kings will certainly be a shock to the system and I expect to see a well fought game between the two. Both teams have some incredibly talented backs with pace and agility. Both teams also have some big boys in the forward pack who aren't easy to take down. Could be a game full of highlights.
