A minimal top up money actually has to be spent doesn't it? As it's agreed to by the RUPA.

I'm not sure. I thought it was just a percentage of the revenue that was guaranteed.

The new agreement isn't online yet so the only one available seems to be the 2004 agreement.

Do you have to rep Australia for 2 years before a top up is offered.

I know that was the case.

I think that is the case with guaranteed top up contracts. It is fairly rubbery and it seems like the coach has a fair amount of say in being able to provide contracts to players they want.

The Ben Mowen situation seemed to come about because he hadn't played enough games to guarantee a top up contract and the coach had no interest in offering him one on a discretionary basis.

I wonder if the ARU top-up is only offered when the Super Rugby contract is being negotiated. Limits the potential recipients for this year even more....

I would say that is the case for the ones that aren't guaranteed via playing a certain number of tests over a two years period.

Only others I could guess, at a big stretch, would be Hunt, Speight, maybe McMahon, Skelton, Carter.

Slim pickings at this end though

McMahon, Skelton and Carter will all likely get top ups as they debuted in 2014 and have all been semi-regular in the 23...........

Speight is a possibility but hasn't played much test rugby this year.

You've surely got to be selective. If the player is going to be in your final 30 man squad you don't release them. There's no point cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Holmes, To'omua and probably Joe Tomane would be the three you certainly wouldn't be releasing. TPN and Pocock won't be released. They'll be in the matchday 23.

You probably would release Gill because it doesn't seem likely he'd be in your final squad.

I read somewhere that Holmes wants to go, but hope not!

Will Tomane be fit? If he is not fit for TRC, is there any point keeping him on the books purely for the EOYT considering he is going overseas? Speight, Naiyaravoro and Naivalu will all be available for the EOYT with Horne & Folau, and then in Europe you would have AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Mitchell & Beale as covers as they are a) nearby & b) eligible 60+

Don't let TPN leave!

Could you release Pocock as he is 60+ and could simply just choose to stay anyway?

Should release Gill otherwise the Reds are having to fork out a hell of a lot of money for maybe an NRC appearance or 2.

I'd guess Tomane will be in the Rugby Championship squad.

They won't release anyone they actually want to select even if it meant they could select them as a 60+ test player under Reg 9 or whatever it is. That would be an unnecessary cause of bad blood to effectively end someone's contract early so someone else can start paying for them.

Whilst the ARU are keen to save costs, they have shown that they are likely to keep more players around than necessary if the coach thinks they are any chance of being selected for the Wallabies.

I'm thinking more about the franchises.

I'd be pretty shitty if I was the Reds and I had to keep paying Gill a couple hundred grand more just coz Cheika wants him to go to Wallaby Camps to be the 4th string option

It won't be a couple of hundred grand. It would be a couple of months of his annual salary. Presumably his annual super rugby salary is a couple of hundred grand.

You could pretty much guarantee it would only be for the Rugby Championship.

I highly doubt Cheika would take players on the EOYT who aren't remaining in Australia or on 60+ tests.

These guys have contracts. Why shouldn't they get paid.

Tomane broke his Tibia last week, had surgery and is gone for about 2 months. So he could maybe recover in time to play SA or possibly that match in London against the Argies.
Forgot about that. On that basis he won't be needed by the Wallabies.

I don't know exactly what happens regarding his contract. Presumably he keeps getting paid by the Brumbies until he is healthy enough to start his new contract overseas.
