Love that story on the Joeys headmaster ... Coaching the 13Hs

A true educator

Really feel a lot of coaches of A teams (particulatlr 1st xv coaches) lose the plot

It really isn't that important

IMHO some coaches Should be shunted to do lower teams , on a periodic basis.. Get some perspective... Remember that the scoreboard only tells part of the story

And the number 1 priority , should not be bragging rights

There really are a lot of coaches that might be achieving good results however are certainly not
Acting like educators

Such a schoolgirl comment.
Take it the the right thread where the big boys will sort you out, like they usually do.

Thx I like to watch - Perhaps you might be kind enough to send me a link to the scholarship thread ........ As a Scots supporter I've had no reason to frequent it this year ......unlike you .....

The 11 for Joeys has been good in the games I have seen but jeez that was bad. Looking forward to reading the game review. Scoring made it sounds like Joeys were never in the game right from the whistle.

11 = Day, he is pretty solid and a very good finisher. IMO the best goal kicker in GPS and probably school rugby anywhere.

A funny moment todays was seeing the Joeys boys cheering on Sydney Grammar in the thirds. They changed their cheers which greatly amused and inspired the Grammar lads.

No doubt the Joeys boys backing the Grammar lads was a momentum booster. What I found even more amusing was the Joeys boys letting a Grammar boy lead one of the chants.

Kings with the lead 15 min to go looked all over Riv but Osborne after taking a very good penalty kick just early failed to take the points with an easier kick and taking the game beyond Riv with less than 5 to go. After failing to convert his earlier try from a kickable possie, lot of doubt if Clarke would convert Rivs try scored on the bell in the corner but he did and in front of his supporters. A great effort and bragging rights for life. Kings joint title hopes in shatters. The lack of a real playmaker at either #9 or #10 to move them around the field confidently and put players in space as well as lack of ability in their forwards to control phases and dominate other teams (IMO) why their title chances folded since the last lost to Riv.

Putting aside "your opinion" the reality is that Kings lost the last 3 games by a total of 12 points. This doesnt indicate a team that was dominated by anyone or that lacked playmakers and direction but rather a team that played in a close comp against equally strong opposition in games that were decided in the dying minutes and that could easily have gone either way!. The for and against stats for this year also clearly show Kings have had the best defence this season. But it's all academic now anyway and to the victor go the spoils, so congrats must go to Scots for being the most consistent.

Correct. First try came from a lineout throw right to the front with return pass to the hooker who scored. They kindly repeated it at the end of the game in case anyone missed it. To be fair Joeys did make a bit of a comeback in the 2nd half but it was never in doubt for Scots.
Sidesteppa, I have really enjoyed your videos on this forum so thanks very much - the video doesn't lie and is unbiased :) I coach an U9 team and I think a highlights package would be well received by parents and may help with improving skills. Can you please give me some guidance on what video equipment to buy.

I wandered up from Cranbrook (from the Waverley game), so I didn't see the entire Scots Joeys game

however it was worth the walk

It was some sort of back to Scots day ... so I gather there was some big bagpipe reunion

effectively loads of old boys (old farts) in kilts

anyway seemed a bit of a carnival atmosphere

the Joeys crowd seemed very jovial, care of the usual across the grades whitewash

It struck me that Joeys were trying to play catch-up, having obviously had a poor first half .. I look forward to seeing what happened in the first stanza, care of Sidesteppa

It seemed like Joeys were trying to unleash their star backs, however a wet track had slightly taken the edge of them, and Scots were trying to frustrate Joeys with some well-executed rolling mauls

the Joeys backs were giving it a red hot crack ... in that typical Joeys fashion

however Scots were defending well ...

It strikes me that Joeys selects backs with X factor whereas Scots opts more for "solid and safe"

think Kurtley Beale versus Michael Lynagh

Archie Gavin was playing as you would expect, given who his old man is ... rock solid

the one exception to the "solid and safe" Scots was the big 14 (yassmin)

he took a high ball from a restart that was freakish ... it looked very basketball-like

I was on the side nearest Yassmin, and he looked a bit at sea defensively and was more-a -less being coached from the sideline ( I know it is not Wimbledon) ... so I guess that is fine

Joeys appeared to be trying to be SMARTLY attack down that left edge

they looked like to have pulled one try back ... the touch judge seemed to be saying it was Ok, but the referee saw a knock-on

It was most likely too little too late

basically Joeys, had let the game get away from them,

Ultimately Scots proved that with a work-man like team (particularly the forwards), they were the worthy 2016 title holders, despite most predicting a poor season, earlier in the year

@SDW well said. I for one didn't think they would be in the hunt.

And they did it without any big name rep players. The old saying a champion team will beat a team of champions. Coaching obviously a factor. Also the seconds and thirds had good season.

SDW summed up the match pretty well, not much to add. For all the money Scots have to splash out on hyperbaric chambers, Wallaby coaches, moon flights, etc, one'd think they could afford to spend a few bob on their playing surface. I realise it's also their cricket field, but, level the bloody thing off. And put in some decent grass. The surrounds of the main oval were very sloppy, bloody difficult when there's a lot of foot traffic.

Shore could also spend some money on the playing surface in addition to the grandstands,

Shore spent money implementing a new drainage system on North bridge A last year. I think you'd find the ground compares favourable to other GPS grounds and specifically on the weekend was much better than the grounds at Kings and Riverview.

I think that was joke although the couch grass always looks dead in winter and it is hard in the middle. Almost all boys won't play in front of grandstand like that ever again.

Leaving the cricket pitch aside, yes the ground was reasonably well drained but quite bumpy and undulating in parts.

Think you will find Kings have a pretty good surface

Scots v Joeys

First minute in and the large 'Back to Scots Day' crowd encircling Scots' Main Oval had barely made it to their seats when a sharp one-two punch was delivered from a lineout on Joeys' 22. Scots' ever alert hooker, Charlie Jeavons-Fellows tossed in to, and then received it straight back out from, tall-timber lock, George Finlayson, sending the Scots' rake scarpering down the right to touch down inside the corner post for the opening try after about 90 seconds.

It was a sharp move, well executed, that took the wind out of the large and boisterous JoeBoys' support contingent. As a nerve-settler for the home side though, it was incomparable.

Another sharply worked set-move off the back of a scrum (captured so beautifully on 'Sidesteppa's trusty cam-corder; see his post earlier in this thread at page 160, post 3199) from No.8 Charlie Crawford to live-wire scrummie Ben Miller, sending a spot-on cutout pass to leading try-scorer Tom Yassmin still with plenty of work to do down the right to go in, and it had the Scots boys up 10-0 early. The poncho-wearing JoeBoys' army in the Eastern stands was stunned to silence, and that would've been "music" to the ears of the lads in Gold.

The Scots D was switched on today and they were were not giving Joeys any room to move either through the middle or out on the edges, with left wing Billy Smith, outside centre Arch Gavin and custodian Will Simpson excelling in shutting down the most promising of Joeys' attacking manoeuvres.

A penalty kick to Scots was followed up by some tight control of the pill through the Scots' piggies, pick-and-driving through numerous phases across the middle, and gaining slow and steady forward progress until, close to the tryline, THP Darcy Breen bullocked his way across the stripe for more meat.

The conversion by Simpson had Scots up 20-0 up after just 17', but it felt almost 'unhurried' such was Scots apparent control of the first part of the game.

Life briefly sprang back into the JoeBoys' chants when one of their best on the day, #13 Yirrbi Jaffer-Williams, got finally driven ahead and over by No.8 Miti Tuinakauvadra, but most unusually for #11 Lachie Day, left unconverted.

But the JoeBoy' resurgence was short-lived, with more control from the Scots forwards allowing scrum half Miller to release Billy Smith down the left flank from around the Joeys 22, and with ears pinned back and a memorable don't-argue fend off of solid Joeys' LHP Layton Holley, Smith got over for more meat in the Northern corner. A superb conversion from Simpson from touch stretched Scots' lead to 27-5 at oranges.

The JoeBoys prayer circle at halftime looked to be calling on any and all celestial assistance to be delivered, and soon if you please, but the Scots huddle was noticeably lacking any great animation; Coach Brenac's "keep working hard" call seemingly the message du jour.

A 20' arm wrestle ensued in the second half until 'that man' yet again this Season, took the initiative. Scots' indefatigable hooker, Jeavons-Fellows, from an attacking lineout close to the Joeys' line, reckoned that it had all worked so well at the beginning of the game, he and his brother-in-arms Finlayson, should repeat the one-two knock-out punch. Ball straight in from the lineout throw, and straight back out. Short and sweet. Another try to "Charlie Jev" to take the Scots boys out to 32-5.

Not even the class of the JoeBoys' backline was going to put 4 converted tries on these lads in Gold in the 15' remaining, but it sure wasn't for lack of trying.

Living their "never give up" mantra, the boys in cerise and blue kept on coming, scoring first through their captain, #10 Nick Wilkinson, and again just before fulltime, to #13 Yirrbi Jaffer-Williams.

The final scoreline 32-17 to Scots, delivered their one hand on the School Challenge Trophy. And the return of the Firsts' teammates back across the pitch to their cheering supporters, with a rousing rendition of "Aulde Lang Syne" belted out with tremendous gusto, showed everyone just how much this win meant to this sometimes unheralded team.

And as news of Riverview's last-gasp win over Kings travelled Eastward from North Parramatta, the Shield became Scots' alone for Season 2016.

Well done all of you Gold lads. Very well done, indeed.

Apparently Newington were a team of two halves against a resurgent shore side, flashbacks of the old dissapointimg newington, then with a revival in the second half to absolutely dominate through their physical play.

Not taking anything away from Newington, their second half display was very formidable. They were the best side over 70 minutes they were not the best over 35 mins,

But keep in mind that Shore had to make a lot of replacement through injury, including both centres, so the team they were facing in the second half had changed considerably from the first half
