usually this time of year I’d be pining for the footie to come back on, after all, it’s perennially the greatest time of the year to be a Blues fan, the side looks great on paper and this year’s drongos have yet to set foot on the park to brainlessly blunderbuss their way to another 5 win fucking season but jeez, REALLY not feeling it this year for some reason… ironically now that Blues are actually looking possibly pretty fucking good. Super 18 (16? 12? Wft is it even called now?) comp that seems tailored to foreign CHING CHING interests/tv money and a nice cushy path to the playoffs for their lads while our poor kiwi pricks slog their nuts out against each other, a standings table that makes zero sense from week 1 thru 15 (or 12 or 18 or however many weeks there are, hardly a fuck given) all following on from a raging soft-on AB’s EOYT that seemed to be a barely-televised exercise in tactical hoodwinking re:the upcoming Lions tour excuse me did you say THURSDAY fucken night? So instead of racing home from work like a mercuried eel shot from Thor’s bumcrack on Friday night I have to do it all a day early?

Always high-scoring affairs, too:

2011 Blues 40-23
2012 Rebs 34-23
2013 Blues 36-32
2014 no match
2015 Rebs 42-22
2016 Blues 36-30

I must admit, it does sound pretty exciting when you put it like that.

Actually looking at your draw I think you'll be needing to get your fill of Polynesian B-ball & Paremoremo jailbreak in early 'cos it could be a quick & deep plunge from "All Hail King Tana" to "WTF?". I thought the Clan had a tough draw (& they do) but fuck me yours is a shocker. Gotta wonder what the schedulers got up to at the Horrorcanes Coronation after-party to give the fuckers such a sweet draw once they'd seen the pix (provided, I hear, by Gunston Security International).

Really looking forward to see how the Blues go this year, and strongly suspect they will overtake the Chiefs in NZ conference, that backline has to click eventually and I really suspect with Pulu at 9 to take heat off West/Francis at 10 they may smoke one or 2 teams by quite a bit during season. I also rate this Rebel's line up as not too bad either so good opening game!!

4. Jimmy Tupou (C)
5. Gerard Cowley-Tuioti
6. Steven Luatua
7. Blake Gibson
8. Akira Ioane
9. Augustine Pulu
10. Ihaia West
11. Melani Nanai
12. Piers Francis
13. Rieko Ioane
14. Matt Duffie
15. Michael Collins

16. Hame Faiva
17. Sam Prattley
18. Charlie Faumuina
19. Scott Scrafton
20. Murphy Taramai
21. Sam Nock

Rebels should be favourites, I'd imagine.

Rebels are underdogs with the bookies and have been all along. Never did understand why, the Blues are notoriously bad travellers and missing so many starters including SBW, they look thoroughly beatable by this Rebels team if they want the win badly enough.

Having learned my lessons the hard way I will be entering Thursday's match with fundamental expectation of being pantsed and starting the season as per usual, with a series of deflating losses.

It's a bet each way - win and I'll be a happy man; lose and I'll be proven correct.

Bloody Kiwi teams are that good against the Australian and Saffa teams maybe they should be handicapped by 10 or 15 points each game unless they are "playing with themselves"

Seems only fair:)

Well, that is interesting. Naivalu and Koroibete both out.

Both sides starting the season beset by injuries. Smith, Hanson and of course McMahon out as well.

This could go either way. Hoping home ground advantage and the Blues' notoriously poor away form will prove the difference.

Fuck me, we ca't take a trick in the injury department.

Still, exiting times ahead. Thought JGB would get the not over JD. Maddocks an exciting pick for the Wing. No Volavola, probably would have picked him over Placid (versatility).

Hats of to little Red, who ears his 50th super cap this week. A fine achievement indeed.

Bob Loudon (25)
Yeah Shipperley is out too.

According to Fairfax, the toll is Naivalu, Koroibete, Shipperley, McMahon, Smith and Hanson.
