CAS Rugby 2017

I think Aloys will be reasonably competitive this year (3 out 5 wins in the CAS would be my best prediction). I think the backs look good but i wouldn't want to see too many injuries to the forward pack. I would like to see Pollack at 10 and Westbury at 15, but just an opinion.

Waverley and Knox will be very hard to beat, especially after playing much harder lead-up games. Leaning towards Waverley with their results from last year proving their strong depth but the early season games might tell the difference between the big 2.

Barker seem to have a lot of Ist xv players returning which must be a real boost to their chances and Trinity and Cranbrook I really don't have much idea to be honest.

Back to just one round of matches means no second chances so it will be interesting. Good luck to all.

so the fact that 2016 is not a 2 round comp, may in fact be a blessing

It will also be interesting how the younger age groups perform, Knox and Waverley have reasonable depth which is great, and I predict some of the GPS A teams will get a good game.

The trial games might hold a lot of interest and have bragging rights attached to them but they'll still be trial games.

These games will be important for the players to impress selectors for Rep teams.

It's still a ''trial' competition with no prize up for grabs, but instead, a precursor to a proposed new competition format, whatever shape that may take. If it eventually leads a school like Aloys to be part of an easier competition then it's a good thing, but it's not as simple as that.

Waverley have very strong 1st and 2nd XV teams this year and should compete well against GPS teams, but that doesn't mean it's a sustainable idea long term.

I'm not too sure if it's really a 2 horse race; anything can happen in a one-round competition, but winning the Henry Plume Shield will still be the ultimate goal.

Can confirm, Coghills MRI results showed a Torn ACL, Torn Meniscus and a Fractured Tibia. Very unfortunate and disappointing for the young lad. Wish him all the best for surgery and his recovery.

That is a serious injury to have torn ACL, Torn Meniscus and a Fractured Tibia, and all occurred at training .... What was he / team doing at the time the injuries occurred ?

Blaise Barnes from Joeys AAGPS did his ACL at training too I believe last year too, just goes to show you can try and wrap players up in cotton wool , prevent them from participating in other contact sports prior to GPS season kick off, but they get serious injuries like this at training before the 1st round kickoff.

Buffa is too old to play is the understanding I have. May be Rod Skellet may be more up to date on that. I think we will know final outcome for Matt later in the week but the medicine is pretty certain it is a bad ACL.

I can confirm Buffa is to old to play. He turns 19 this year so is ineligible under CAS rules. Barker is looking for an entire front row. That said the rest of the team is coming together nicely. But we all know that to be competitive the scrum must stack up. I am sure the powers that be will work something out. It s a pity that Ben Fekira the Barker basketball captain does not play rugby. At 6'10 and about 115kg, with fabulous hands ball skills and athleticism, he would give Nick Frost a real shake.... Anyway back to the real world.

either way both schools depth could be tested .... and fringe players are bound to get an opportunity.

Better put your mouth-guards in ... mine is already in ... ready for a bruising season.

I hear Waverley's Eden Rogers-Smith bagged 2 tries in the Roosters demolition of Wests in yesterday's SG Ball game

so that is sounding good for the Double V

and no doubt the other Waverley kids (Moretti, Hardaker etc) would have gone alright, after beating a Souths team (in the previous week) that included Joeys Triston Reily and Tyrone Taukamo

Ben is a very talented basketball player and did play Rugby in the past so it will be interesting to see how he goes if he has in fact re joined Rugby for the season. I would be surprised if he has as he did intend to concentrate on basketball. Re Matt Coghill. My understanding is that he simply planted a foot for a sidestep - no body contact caused the injury. Matt had bulked up somewhat in the off season with tales of his weight ranging from 115KG to 125KG depending on who is telling the story. With an increased BMI the risk of knee damage increases somewhat. But to get the Trifecta is extremely sad.

Luke Ryan (8) and Alex Rahme (7) were standouts last year for Aloys in the 16's

Not really. 3 warmup games then the usual 10, just this year it's 5 GPS, 5 CAS.

Agree though that not many easy games (skipping Shore, as well as High and Grammar in GPS). Shirley came 2nd in the Christchurch comp last 2yrs
