So, $80 mil to save the Force from the chop? From Panda.

ARU chairman Cameron Clyne told Andrew Forrest it would take $80 million to secure the Western Force’s future at the infamous meeting in Adelaide on August 22.

Guess all it needed was formal offer in writing...

The ARU requested specifics of the offer in writing by the Force after the meeting that Forrest had pledged to do whatever it takes to save them and that “you should not be doubting his word or his intent”.

Still, Panda is right about this one.

In reality the ARU’s mind was made up. SANZAAR wanted 15 teams, and by then the Melbourne Rebels’ ownership had changed hands to the VRU, leaving the Force as the only option to cut.

Once the Rebels were sold to the VRU, they were off the table.

Where did he pluck this $80milliom figure from...

Cutting the Force saves $6million a year, for the next 3 years.. so that's $18million, where the hell is Clyne plucking this extra $62million from?!

That bloke is full of shit, plain and simple

From that article:

The insane figure was thrown up because SANZAAR had already agreed to a 15-team tournament and to keep the Force, they’d have to go to a 16-team format and repay all franchises money that would be taken off the table for losing one home game a year each.

Forrest responded by saying he would invest between “$10 million to $50 million” to the Australia Rugby Foundation into professional, women’s and indigenous rugby.

It was a verbal offer.

Also........

Meanwhile, Wallabies hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau is moving closer to an overseas move.

The rake is fuming at the cutting of the Force and wants out — knowing he qualifies for Australia under the Giteau Law having played 73 Tests.

Adam Coleman, brothers Dane and Ross Haylett-Petty, Richard Hardwick and Jono Lance are set to join Melbourne Rebels along with coach Dave Wessels, while Bill Meakes is tipped to join NSW Waratahs.

Ah yes, the undertones of that article are clear, ARU attempting to use the media to clear their name.. claimng that SANZAAR agreed to cut a team, conveniently overlooking that SANZAAR requires unanimous decision from the ARU. Pressing on the issue that It was a verbal offer, and that they asked for more details.

I question the logic of this, I don't see how that equates to $62milliom.. and if that's true... then it goes back to what we've been saying for a long time about the infamous EGM where the reduction in teams was supported by the state unions. It was reluctantly supported because the ARU had signed a contract which bound Australian Rugby to cut a team and to oppose that would come at a financial cost to the Australian Rugby...

The decision to cut a team and assume a finacial penalty if they opposed it, was done prior to any EGM held with the member unions.

ARU presented a deal, which to opppse it, would come at a significant financial cost to all Australia unions.

As is the case in any war, the victor attempting to rewrite history to suit their narrative. Get stuffed ARU and your hand puppet Panda.

the aru can make up whatever BS they want, the problem for them now is they are toast. They will destroy them one way or another. It will probably be slowly as they have all the power but it will happen.
I think I can imagine their anger at the treachery of it but it is probably not even a scratch.
You can see the quiet resolve in their faces.

The Griquas and Pumas (RSA version) may join the Anglo Welsh cup next season with a decision to be made in October this year.

I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing for as far as I know the Griquas and Pumas are feeder unions to the Cheetahs and Lions respectively.

Still, it seems SARU are not resting on their laurels. All we need now is for the Boks to win the Championship and it will be the best year in SA rugby since 2009.

So the execs/directors who promised SANZAAR effectively tied the ARU board's hands to endorse the cut otherwise they'd be voting to pay compensation with money the didn't have?

Fans here might not understand that these two teams/unions are probably the biggest in RSA that dont have Franchise status.

Is it a combined team, Ulrich? Or they both get a gig?

BTW, I am reading through this that SARU are definitely looking to expand, but they are not looking to drop Super completely. It also adds interest to the CC where you get to see all franchises ar work in a domestic environment.

By their own admission of the $80million figure, that sounds precisely like what they did. ARU board members knew what options were on the table, Clyne claimed there were a number of options discussed and agreed to by the board before they went to London, yet why did Pulver and Robinson agree to such ridiculous terms without first presenting the agreed option to the member unions?

It's just a guess - maybe they mean $30million over the $50 million he proposed, so it's the extra $30 million we need to work out, not $62 million? $30 million seems like a lot to pay back other teams for loss of match earnings though, given the crowd sizes this past season. ;)

But, do you know who the ARU had representing them at this all important meeting, not the CEO or Chairman.. they sent the deputy chairman, Brett Robinson to a meeting to decide the future of Australian Rugby.
