It'd probably be more accurate to say that it manipulates the interests of the public, rather than ignore it. Murdoch media is particularly guilty of this.

Harsh, my arse. FTA has done SFA for the good of this country in terms of political interference, ignoring the wishes of the greater public, and in lowering the intelligence of the populace. I hear that streaming will be all the rage in the near future, so get on with it. Then perhaps those who wish to watch our national teams do their business overseas can get to see them in action for a nominal cost.

FFS

That isn't their job, they are there to sell advertising, their job is to make money for their shareholders

What is played between the ads is just their to draw eyeballs as cheaply as possible to sell shit

If they thought they could get enough eyeballs to make money by playing some international rugby match at 2.00am they would

We all should be all thankful for Foxtel, without them their wouldn't be pro rugby in Aus.

And with the devolution of pay TV, just be very afraid how little they will pay for the next deal as everyone "unplugs", be very afraid

The demand will still be there though, right. So surely there is a market for a sports streaming service once foxtel finally becomes redundant.

I never thought I would find myself defending the popular media, but frankly, your views are so patronisingly elitist that I just have to.

If, as you put it, the popular media is “ignoring the wishes of the greater public”, why on earth does the greater public watch it?

And how, precisely, does the media manage to “lower intelligence?” Can you quote some studies?

Come off it Wamb. Posters don't need to quote studies to back up their opinions. Let's just take a look at many of your own posts defending the actions of the ARU when the very evidence of their actions condemns them in any balanced observation.

They are being screwed by changing viewing habits, it is little wonder with viewership and profits dropping that the quality of programming has dropped as well

Think you've put the cart before the horse there FP. Viewers are flocking away from broadcast television because of the ever declining quality, increased number of ads, and extremely restricting scheduling: not the other way around.

A lot of it is that the captive audience they enjoyed for so long now has lots of other options to occupy their time.

I don't think people are watching screens less, they just have more options and a lot of them at price points much lower than pay TV.

But it's FTA we are discussing BH, not pay TV. Those of us who have Fox are getting our moneys worth of rugby (and it's not so expensive that a pensioner such as me can't afford it). The bitch is that the EOYT rugby isn't being shown on FTA. Same for overseas cricket tests too iirc.

I know. The reason I mentioned pay TV is that it has been around for a relatively long time but it is only the last couple of years where there has really been an exodus from FTA TV so it is not pay TV driving that exodus. It is things like Netflix that come in at a relatively low price point as well as the ability to stream and download content from the internet. Clearly pay TV didn't destroy the FTA TV market because the price point is too high to make most users take it up and stop watching FTA.

Agree that Netflix and others offer a huge quality advantage over FTA and will likely continue to eat into FTA audiences. Even better as an iinet customer, the download for Netflix shows is free. Won't mean much though if and when I move to an unlimited download plan.

That's not even mentioning the fact that Australians are the biggest piraters per capita in the world.

Cheik’s inconsistent logic and gut calls continue to distress and confuse me. There are multiple examples across the squad.

Anything less than 3 wins sucks. It will be very sweet indeed to get some revenge on England and Scotland
