The First SANZAR deal was US$555 million for 10 years 1996-2005
the second deal US$323 million for 5 years 2006-2010
The third deal US$437 million for 5 years 2011- 2015

The opportunity to get Rugby on Free to air (FTA) TV after the 2003 RWC was 2006. They couldn't get rugby on FTA TV straight after 2003. The momentum was lost. JON wasn't involved in the 2006 deal. The ARC was an attempt to get rugby on FTA TV, good concept poorly executed.

I love how even when John O'Neill isn't involved, he still gets blamed.

SA not only dominate the crowds average but also the TV viewers.

So all but two of the 20 most viewed games were hosted in SA …
And all but one of the 20 most viewed games included an SA side …
13 of the of the 20 most viewed games were SA derbies …
The Stormers were involved in 8 of the top 9 most viewed games …
The Stormers and Bulls were involved in 9 of the top 20 most viewed games …
New Zealand sides were involved in 6 of the top 20 most viewed games …
Australian sides were involved in just 2 of the top 20 most viewed games …

What is the population of SA? This would have a lot to do with the number of viewers. I wonder if anyone calculates what the ratings percentage of viewers is?

Population will mean nothing. Subscription viewership will be more comparable.

The last FTA deal did not even have a Super Rugby highlights package. So the current Channel Nine deal is a slight improvement. I suppose the ARU could give the FTA rights away to SBS for nothing. Would that be better, in your opinion?

Yes, because SBS would show it at a reasonable time and pick up way more viewers than nine currently does. Nine wants the tests and wants to keep their foot in the door to prevent their prime product being attacked. So they give away one hour after midnight one day a week.

Interesting to see in the 2012 figures that more Saffers were watching the NZ derby between the Saders and Blues as Kiwis. Will be interesting to see if the same tendense happens in the Aus derbies and myself wont be surprise to see the same thing.

A quick bit of google research suggests that South Africa has about 3.5m subscribers, Australia has about 1.65m subscribers and New Zealand has about 850,000 subscribers.

Half the subscribers over here may even be relocated Saffers Chicken Runners, if PaarlBoks revalation that Saffers like their footy is correct.:)

Edit: Sorted

Aus figures are heavily down from 2012
http://www.talkingfooty.com/tv_ratings_2012.php
Aus derbies = 2,041,000 Viewers 113,389 average
NZ derbies = 1,097,000 Viewers 68,563 average
Aus vs NZ teams in Aus = 710,000 viewers 88,750 average
NZ vs Aus teams in NZ = 573,000 average 81,857 average
Aus vs SA teams in Aus = 677,000 viewers 84,625 average
NZ vs SA teams in NZ = 429,000 viewers 61,285 average
not televised direct SA matches?

Total viewers 5,527,000 Average 86,359

Summary:
Viewers are heavy down from 2011. Compare Aus derbies to SA derbies and you get the answer the S15 will be dead without SA.

PB you are incorrect on Aus figures been heavily down from 2011...

In 2011 there were 9 Super Rugby rounds which dropped below 300'000 views... In 2012 this has only happened once.

2011 a total of 6,983,000 watch S15 rugby on TV averaging 83,130 per match.

Sorry my mistake. That included the finals.

Edit: Exclude the finals which may make a huge differense depending which teams qualify this weekend.

In actual terms, the average audience for Super Rugby has increased from 2011 to 2012
Wish I can get hold of the total SA match figures, maybe they will give it later. The Stormers sure look healthy looking at the top 10 and also topping the attendances by quite a margin.

Regular Season
2010 - 3'550'000
2011 - 5'930'000
2012 - 6'057'000

Obviously the tournament changed in 2011 with an extra Aussie team and more games..

and the main point is that every week there is a Saturday night game on at 7.30pm. I think in the S14 there was a couple of weeks where there were no teams in Australia for a weekend.
If the Draw always had an Aussie team on Friday and Saturday night at 7.30pm then you have won half of the battle.
Then you need to have one Aussie team in NZ for the 5.30pm Saturday game or a Perth (9.30pm game on Saturday night)

If the Sharks knocks out the Reds this weekend, your figures will be a decrease on 2011. There is only a ball hair's differense.
