Do or die time in Absa Currie Cup

October 17, 2013
The Absa Currie Cup Premier Division will reach boiling point on Saturday as the top four teams go head-to-head for lucrative final berths in epic clashes.
GWK Griquas and the Steval Pumas will also take to the field in Kimberley on Friday at 19h10 in the first of two Absa Currie Cup promotion-relegation games to determine which of the teams will feature in the Premier Division next season.
Defending champions, DHL Western Province, will meet the MTN Golden Lions at DHL Newlands in the first semifinal on Saturday at 14h30, while The Sharks meet the Toyota Free State Cheetahs at Growthpoint Kings Park in Durban at 17h00 in the semifinals.
Should Western Province and the Sharks advance to the final, it will mark their third back-to-back final in SA’s premier domestic competition. A victory for the Sharks this weekend, meanwhile, would earn them their fourth back-to-back final appearance in the competition.
DHL Western Province vs MTN Golden Lions
With home ground advantage and winning momentum counting in DHL Western Province’s favour, they will enter their semifinal against the MTN Golden Lions as favourites.
Such has been the consistency of the Cape side’s performances this season they finished the round-robin stages unbeaten.
But while they share the best defensive record with the Sharks during the round-robin stages, they were second-last on the list of tries scored. In stark contrast the Lions were the top try-scorers with an average of four tries per match, but they conceded 10 more tries than Western Province, meaning their defence will be one of their main focus areas on Saturday.
The Lions will also have to improve their discipline significantly to keep alive hopes of an upset, after conceding several penalties last week, which allowed Griquas to keep the scoreboard ticking.
A similar disciplinary effort this week could come at a high price, especially with accurate Western Province goal-kicker Demetri Catrakilis on form with the boot.
The teams have been closely matched in the Absa Currie Cup over the last few seasons, with Western Province winning four of their last 10 match-ups, and the Lions five.
The other match ended in a 31-31 draw earlier this season. Three of the Cape side’s victories, however, were at home, which should give them confidence.
DHL Western Province coach Allister Coetzee pinned his hopes of a victory on the players that held on for a 17-13 victory against the Sharks last week to guide the team to a possible home final, with the only change to the starting team being at outside centre where Springbok captain Jean de Villiers will start.
He will partner Damian de Allende in a hard-running midfield combination, while his national team-mate Juan de Jongh has been named on the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury.
Lions coach Johan Ackermann, meanwhile, made a handful of changes to his team with props CJ van der Linde and Ruan Dreyer earning starts.
Star flyhalf Elton Jantjies has recovered from injury and will start at No10 in a halfback pairing with Ross Cronje, meaning Marnitz Boshoff will start at fullback.
DHL Western Province: Gio Aplon; Gerhard van den Heever, Jean de Villiers, Damian de Allende, Cheslin Kolbe; Demetri Catrakilis, Louis Schreuder; Duane Vermeulen, Siya Kolisi, Deon Fourie; De Kock Steenkamp, Eben Etzebeth; Pat Cilliers, Scarra Ntubeni, Steven Kitshoff. Replacements: Frans Malherbe, Brok Harris, Michael Rhodes, Schalk Burger, Nic Groom, Kurt Coleman, Juan de Jongh.
MTN Golden Lions:Marnitz Boshoff; Chrysander Botha, Lionel Mapoe, Andries Coetzee, Anthony Volmink; Elton Jantjies, Ross Cronje; Warren Whiteley, Derick Minnie (capt), Jaco Kriel; Franco van der Merwe, Chris van Zyl; Ruan Dreyer, Willie Wepener, CJ van der Linde. Replacements: Robbie Coetzee, Jacques van Rooyen, Julian Redelinghuys, Willie Britz, Warwick Tecklenburg, Tian Meyer, Robert de Bruyn.

The Sharks vs Toyota Free State Cheetahs
In Durban the Sharks will enter their clash against the Toyota Free State Cheetahs with confidence despite coming off a defeat against Western Province last week.
Home ground advantage and an impressive run in the pool stages aside, the team boasts a fantastic track-record against the Cheetahs in the competition.
In the last nine outings between the teams in the Absa Currie Cup, the Sharks have won eight matches, with their last victory being an encouraging 50-26 win last month.
But the Durban side will pay little attention to this when the team’s line up on Saturday, especially since the visitors have also been bolstered by the presence of Springbok front-rowers, Adriaan Strauss and Coenie Oosthuizen, while a handful of their backs have begun to stamp their authority, including flyhalf Elgar Watts and wing Raymond Rhule.
The set-piece battle, in particular, is expected to be decisive with Springboks Bismarck du Plessis and Tendai Mtawarira of the Sharks and the Cheetahs’ Oosthuizen, Strauss and Trevor Nyakane being pitted against one another.
The Sharks also welcomed back Springbok centre Francois Steyn in the starting team after an injury-layoff, which will bulk up their backline and also offer the bonus of long-range goal kicks and drop goals.
In total the Sharks have named 10 Springboks in their starting XV - experience which will be invaluable given the high stakes.
Unfortunately for the team, however, Springbok tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis has been ruled out after picking up a hand injury during training.
In the Cheetahs camp, coach Naka Drotske made only one change to the team that defeated the Blue Bulls, with star goal kicker Riaan Smit returning from injury to reclaim his place on the right wing, which forced Ryno Benjamin to the bench.
Springbok flyhalf Johan Goosen will again start on the bench, with Elgar Watts named at No10.
The Sharks: SP Marais; Odwa Ndungane, Louis Ludik, Francois Steyn, Lwazi Mvovo; Pat Lambie, Charl McLeod; Keegan Daniel (capt), Jean Deysel, Marcell Coetzee; Pieter-Steph du Toit, Peet Marais; Wiehahn Herbst, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira. Replacements: Kyle Cooper, Danie Mienie, Stephan Lewies, Jacques Botes, Cobus Reinach, Fred Zeilinga, Heimar Williams.
Toyota Free State Cheetahs: Hennie Daniller; Riaan Smit, Johann Sadie, Robert Ebersohn, Raymond Rhule; Elgar Watts, Sarel Pretorius; Philip van der Walt, Pieter Labuschagne, Boom Prinsloo; Lood de Jager, Francois Uys; Trevor Nyakane, Adriaan Strauss (capt), Coenie Oosthuizen. Replacements: Hercu Liebenberg, Rossouw de Klerk, Teboho Mohoje, Freddy Ngoza, Piet van Zyl, Johan Goosen, Ryno Benjamin.

GWK Griquas vs Steval Pumas
The promotion-relegation clash between GWK Griquas and the Steval Pumas should be thrilling as the teams battle it out to get on the front foot a place in the Absa Currie Cup Premier Division next season.
While Griquas will be disappointed with their performance this season with only one victory in 10 matches, the Pumas will enter the clash on a high after advancing to the First Division final stages unbeaten and keeping that record intact to win the competition last week.
Their confidence aside, the team’s attack has been impressive with 76 tries in their 14 pool matches alone, while they have supported this with a solid defensive effort.
These skills will be handy against Griquas whose defence has been their Achilles heel this season.
The Kimberley side have also battled to make their presence felt on attack.
However, they have played at a higher level in the Premier Division and will take comfort from the fact that they have put up a brave fight against the top five provincial teams in the country, as they accumulated six bonus points for losing within seven points.
Griquas have welcomed back Springbok wing Willie le Roux, who is expected to be one of their main attacking weapons, while coach Pote Human has recalled all his star players who were rested last week.
This includes centre Howard Mnisi, hooker Ryno Barnes, flyhalf Francois Brummer and flank Marnus Schoeman.
Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse, meanwhile, made only one change to his team that were crowned the Absa Currie Cup First Division champions last week, with tighthead prop Ivann Espag replacing De-Jay Terblanche, who in turn drops to the bench.
The visitors are expected to rely heavily on flyhalf Carl Bezuidenhout to dictate play and keep the scoreboard rolling with his pin-point goal kicking, while exciting backs Rosco Speckman, Coenie van Wyk and JW Bell could be some of their key attacking weapons.
GWK Griquas: Gouws Prinsloo; Willie le Roux, Jean Stemmet, Howard Mnisi, Rocco Jansen; Francois Brummer, Marnus Hugo; Burger Schoeman, RJ Liebenberg, Marnus Schoeman, Jaco Nepgen, Ligtoring Landman, Lourens Adriaanse, Ryno Barnes (capt), Steph Roberts. Replacements: Matthew Dobson, Janro van Niekerk, Patrick O’Brien, Carel Greeff, Jacques Coetzee, JP Nel, Nico Scheepers.
Steval Pumas:Coenie van Wyk; JW Bell, Wilmaure Louw, Stefan Watermeyer, Rosco Speckman; Carl Bezuidenhout, Faf de Klerk; RW Kember, Renaldo Bothma, Corné Steenkamp (capt); Eduan van der Walt, Rudi Mathee; Ivann Espag, Frank Herne, Corné Fourie. Replacements: Swys du Toit, Vincent Koch, De-Jay Terblanche, Giant Mtyanda, Uzair Cassiem, JC Roos, Dewald Pretorius.

All roads lead to Newlands in Cape Town

October 20, 2013
DHL Western Province and The Sharks this weekend booked their places in the Absa Currie Cup final in Cape Town next Saturday after powering their way to victories against the MTN Golden Lions and Toyota Free State Cheetahs respectively.
With Western Province finishing the round-robin stages as the top team, their 33-16 victory against the Lions ensured a home final at DHL Newlands, while the Sharks registered a 33-22 victory against the Cheetahs in Durban.
This year’s final will mark the second successive time the teams battle it out for the trophy and the bragging rights as Absa Currie Cup champions. As a bonus the winner will walk away with a rewarding R1,8m cheque while the runners up will earn R1,2m for their efforts.
In the other big clash this weekend, GWK Griquas scored a last-minute try in their Absa Currie Cup promotion-relegation game against the Steval Pumas in Kimberley on Friday for a 21-19 victory and a chance to retain their place in the Premier Division next season.
The teams will meet again in Nelspruit next week in the deciding clash.
DHL Western Province 33 (18) MTN Golden Lions 16 (9)
In Cape Town, the MTN Golden Lions started the clash against DHL Western Province with an attacking mind-set, but turnovers and penalties conceded at crucial times throughout the match cost them dearly.
After a strong opening spell by the Lions the hosts found their rhythm and retained possession, which allowed them to breach the visitors defence.
Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies opened up the scoring in the sixth minute with a penalty despite this the home side dominating proceedings as Springbok captain Jean de Villiers and Gio Aplon came close to scoring tries.
While De Villiers was caught metres before the tryline after a fantastic intercept, the pass to Aplon for their second attempted try was ruled forward.
WP flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis, however, put his team on the scoreboard in the 18th minute, while Jantjies backed this up with two penalties in the next few minutes.
But with momentum favouring the home side and their play-makers dodging tackles, the team earned their first try in the 22nd minute. Catrakilis touched down first after a great break by Springbok looseforward Duane Vermeulen, while Aplon danced his way through the defence four minutes before half time to earn the team a six point lead over the Lions.
Catrakilis added to this by slotting over a penalty on the stroke of full-time for an 18-9 lead.
The home team built on this after the break with Catrakilis kicking over two penalties in the first 12 minutes.
But the Lions managed to contain them for the next quarter, and at times managed to get their hands on the ball.
These efforts to claw their way back into the match, however, proved fruitless as Western Province continued to win turnovers at will. Catrakilis extended Province’s lead to 27-9 with eight minutes to go.
But the visitors went down fighting as No8 Warren Whitely powered his way over the tryline in the last five minutes for their first try and a double-digit score.
This, however, was cancelled out soon after as WP replacement back Kurt Coleman added two penalties to their tally.
Scorers:
DHL Western Province 33 (18) - Tries: Demetri Catrakilis, Gio Aplon. Conversion: Catrakilis. Penalties: Demetri Catrakilis (4), Kurt Coleman (2).
MTN Golden Lions 16 (9) – Try: Warren Whitely. Conversion: Marnitz Boshoff. Penalties: Elton Jantjies (3).
The Sharks 33 (16) Toyota Free State Cheetahs 22 (7)
The clash between The Sharks and Toyota Free State Cheetahs in Durban started off as an arm-wrestle despite an early try by the visitors’ Pieter Labuschagne in the third minute.
The Sharks were particularly impressive in the scrums, dominated possession and did well to string together phases, but the Cheetahs defence was solid, resulting in the Sharks battling to cross the tryline.
Springbok flyhalf Pat Lambie slotted over two penalties in the first 18 minutes and added a stunning try from a dummy pass in the 37th minute, which he converted and then subsequently added a penalty, to hand the Sharks a 16-7 lead at the break.
The home side built on this early in the second half, as they continued to string together phases, which set up flank Jacques Botes for their second try 11 minutes into the half.
The Cheetahs tried hard to force their way back into the match and earned a try for their efforts with centre Johann Sadie stretching over the line for their second five-pointer, which reduced the deficit to nine points.
This kick-started a frantic few minutes, in which Sharks replacement back Heimar Williams and Cheetahs prop Schalk van der Merwe scored tries while both teams were reduced to 14 men.
Cheetahs scrumhalf Piet van Zyl received a yellow card for an attempted trip, while Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis was sin-binned for tramping on a player’s chest.
Lambie added another penalty to the Sharks total, which handed the Durban side a 33-22 lead, which they held onto in the last few minutes to book their place in the final.
Scorers:
The Sharks 33 (16) – Tries: Pat Lambie, Jacques Botes, Heimar Williams. Conversions: Pat Lambie (3). Penalties: Lambie (4).
Toyota Free State Cheetahs 22 (7) – Tries: Pieter Labuschagne, Johann Sadie, Schalk van der Merwe. Conversions: Riaan Smit, Johan Goosen. Penalty: Johan Goosen.
GWK Griquas 21 (0) Steval Pumas 19 (13)
Absa Currie Cup First Division champions the Steval Pumas started their promotion-relegation clash against GWK Griquas in Kimberley strongly as they built up a 13-0 lead at the break.
Flyhalf Carl Bezuidenhout kicked two penalties in the opening 10 minutes, and centre Wilmaure Louw added a try, which Bezuidenhout converted to push the team ahead.
Griquas, however, stepped up their game in the second half and reaped the rewards as Carel Greeff and Jean Stemmet scored tries, which fullback Gouws Prinsloo converted to force the hosts back into the game.
Two penalties by Pumas replacement back JC Roos, the second of which was converted seven minutes from time, pushed the Pumas into a 19-14 lead.
But the visitors were dealt a big blow in the last minute as lock Giant Mtyanda received a yellow card, which Griquas capitalised on to score their third try in the dying seconds.
With the scores level at 19-19, Prinsloo kicked the conversion to hand Griquas a last-gasp victory.
Scorers:
GWK Griquas 21 (0) – Tries: Carel Greeff, Jean Stemmet, Marnus Schoeman. Conversions: Gouws Prinsloo.
Steval Pumas 19 (13) – Try: Wilmaure Louw. Conversion: Carl Bezuidenhout. Penalties: Bezuidenhout (2), JC Roos (2).

Sharks Cheetahs game was absolutely awful.
Yes. Think the field was heavy after some rain. I really enjoyed the prom/releg match between Pumas and the Griquas on friday night. Hell I will never understand why a coach like Stonehouse dont get a s15 dig somewhere. Unbelievable what he get out of underpaid and no papername players. Pretty sure they'll get promotion after the weekend. Battleship lost it against the Cheetahs and may sit out. Also saw some brain explosions from Etsebeth and Duanne.

Dunno why Aplon dont get into the Bok sqaud. Feel he is one good performance away from it. Dunno if its Kolbe (smaller, quicker, nippier) but Aplon sure look so much more compose compare to a year back and was on his normal best on saturday.

U21s final will be awesome and some of the best young up coming SA players in action.
WP
Leyds last game for WP and off to Force. Howard/van Wyk JWC golden medal holders played for Maties and an excellent midfield combination. Howard moving to the wing show where WP will use him next year at the Stormers. Smid, Katzen played CC this year. Ruan Botha BIG lock and JWC golden medal holder & Guy Kebbles boy Oliver prop. Barry and Lewis speedsters on the bench.
Bulls
Team is packed with senior Brute CC players and next year s15 players. Serfontein already in the Bok sqaud and Small-Smith a deadly midfield combo. Add Pollard and you have the most promising young 10/12/13 in SA. Jacques du Plessis, Liebenberg ,Willemse all golden medal holders in 2012 JWC.

Bulls defnite favourates to win this one and the two teams surely the next Bok generation.

WP depth is awesome, players like Nizaam Carr and Elstadt not making the match 22 tells it all.

Obvious my heart and head say WP. If we can match them at the 1st phase and physical exchanges we'll win this one. To much striking power out wide and bench from WeePee.

Sell out crowd two days in advange.

That fish turned around and bit him in the balls.

That was a masterclass of outright bitchslapping from the Sharks forwards.

And they still have Jake White to come in and take over.

Ja Sharks played well and desreved the CC. The only WP player to hold his head high is Ginga.

White sure was already busy with them in the lead up to the final. I think Brendon Venter is pretty good. Know he wont move from Somerset West but hell we need him somewhere in SA in some coaching role.

WP u21 at least gave some joy beating the big paper name Bulls u21 side.

WP will have a massive u19 side next year so the structures sure look sound for the future.

2014 S15 will be a hard tough one for the Stormers. Playing Chiefs/Saders/Reds/Brumbies on tour. If they survive this they'll sure will do evry good.

Plenty to work on.
