Deakin!?

What have these muppets been saying to you? If you are coming to Australia only to sightsee and annoy lecturers, you should ... wait ...

... actually, Deakin is a superb choice. You'll just love Geelong!

when i went over to study, i checked in a lot with my own university's study abroad office. they got me set up with Arcadia Univ. study abroad program here's the link i believe there are similar versions out there. so i had the option of going with them and getting set up with most of the stuff you're talking about (housing, orientation, airport shuttle (i think), activities in sydney, and a few trips outside the city, along with 4 days in melbourne to start the semester).

i'd say there are pros and cons to this kind of thing.

it allowed me to quickly meet other students in the program and make friends. the activities were things like sporting events and scuba diving and generally worth the money (cost extra usually). the people serving as advisors were fun and super helpful.

on the other hand, it can sucker you in to be overly-structured. my friends that didn't go with that program probably met a few more australians than i did, and did more random things like renting a van and driving themselves to byron bay. i'm also not sure of the cost difference for booking stuff on your own.

but something to ponder....

In terms of world rankings, Sydney, and to a lesser extent Adelaide, are a lot better than the others you've mentioned, though all are pretty decent.

If you mainly want to check out the sights then you might as well be further north (there is plenty to see in Melb, but it sounds like you want a more tropical experience), so I'd look at campuses in QLD or Sydney. Sydney has the advantage of offering a big city with easy access to various sight seeingy things, though if the Great Barrier reef is high on your to do list be warned that it's 1500km away.

Interesting! I'll have to check with my school to see if they have anything similar to offer. I can see how a structured program like that can have its disadvantages, but it's definitely something I'm still interested in to ease the transition.

If all goes well, I plan to spend some time after the semester finishes to see the Great Barrier Reef and other sights that I likely wouldn't be able to see during the semester because they are so far away. My semester in Australia would end in November, and classes here resume in January, so hopefully I can spend the extra time to see and do everything on my wishlist before I return home. I think this would make Sydney my ideal choice, as you and the majority of others here have alluded to.

A little surprised that Bond Uni didn't get a mention. Small boutique university but very popular with North American students due to the semester timing. A little bit of a party school but I went there and I turned out alright... I guess...

Do they charge similar fees to internationals as they do to locals?

I personally have nothing against the private University paying structure but it would surely be damn expensive to go there with all the others exchange costs.

I don't know why anyone would want to come to Australia to study really. The uni life here is crap compared to the US.

It's easy to say this if you are Australian, because the culture and environment you're living in is second nature to you. But the perspective is entirely different for someone living on the other side of the world.

American universities are pretty similar to Canadian ones in terms of academic environments; U.S. schools just put much more emphasis on athletics. Listing an Australian university on my resume would also be much more eye-catching and beneficial than listing, say, University of Michigan, because a lot of Canadians go down the the States to study anyway. Listing a more distant and exotic place demonstrates greater self-motivation, independence, responsibility, etc.

More importantly, though, I am not looking to study on exchange for a "better university life"; rather, it's all about venturing out and seeing a completely different continent, learning its values, language, habits, beliefs and culture, increasing my knowledge, learning things that I could not read in a book or see on television, etc. Without question, I would learn a heck of a lot more going to Australia than going to the States, which I have been to numerous times anyway. It's all about greater potential for personal growth. It's also why Australia is consistently the most popular destination for Canadian post-secondary students.

That all makes perfect sense. It's the same reason that many Aussies go overseas for a period of time after graduating: an opportunity to see the world, grow into a more rounded person and gain some valuable experience. It looks great on the CV and I'm definitely glad I did it.

International students aren't eligible for Commonwealth Support places so it costs exactly the same when you are full fee paying as any other University. The cost difference is due to the fact that Bond doesn't offer these.
