yeah you would think so, but not over there.
he will have a LOT of support in Pretoria especially, based soley on racial grounds.
EVERYONE who drinks & drives pays the bribe, then want the high moral ground because the copper accepted their bribe.
It will be South Africa's version of the OJ trial.
I feel sorry for the coppers family, not only have they lost a loved one, but his name is being dragged through the mud, in an attempt to justify his brutal killing.

Some things remain the same in SA:

The police are currupt.
People drive drunk because they aither don't give a fuck or there is no alternate means of transport or both.
An Afrikaner will kill a black man and find support in some dark corners of Afrikaner society.
A racial issue will galvanise people more than most other things.
Human life has no value.

SA is a great country but at times it is just fucked.

From my little experience, the way I see it all countries are fucked; just some are more fucked up than others.

This story always sounded a bit sus.

Goes to show that you really need to keep your wits about you at all times when overseas. The benefits of having one or more wingman with you at all times can never be underestimated.

Tragedy for the policeman's family and for the Bees Knees.

Sex, Alcohol, and Corruption appear to be contributing factors. If one of these factors weren't present, the whole situation would have been avoided.

No, just take the alcohol out of the equation.
tragedy for Beez?
He didn't just smack him once , with the guy hitting his hard when he landed, he beat him repeatedly to death!

Tragedy for Bees Knees is that he has killed a fellow human, albeit while under the influence of alcohol.

regardless of how one feels towards him, or the circumstances of the thrashing he may or may not have given to the deceased copper, his life and that of his loved ones will never be the same again. Is this a tragedy?

Grog a major factor. how many other sportsmen have had their dreams dashed by lapses of judgement while under the influence?

In any so called civilised society, it doesn't take much scratching below the surface to reveal bad stuff.

There are some small pockets of Sydney which are almost third world, not to mention the overall health, wealth and treatment of our Aboriginal population and before we point the finger at Safferland, we should make sure our own house is in order.

While I have never been there, I am told that most of USA is wild west trailer park land where crime is as bad as any third world backwater.

Safferland has some pretty bad problems all round, but most problems are not unique to SA.

SA is like no other place, we have to remember that any adult has lived at least part of their life with apartheid. The mindset that maintained apartheid for all those years did not disappear with the election of Mandela. There are many that still hold these values. Economic apartyheid now exists, with most blacks having no real improvement in their living standards. The gap between the haves & have nots is so vast it defies description. Many whites are resentful of the Blacks, as are many blacks with the whites.
I love the place but it is dysfunctional and is a powder keg waiting to go off.
When security guards are armed with AK47's outside of shops in suburbia, it gives an indication of the state of the joint.
With a murder rate of 20k pa with a population circa 50 million, if everyone lived to a 100, they would have a 1 in 25 chance of being murdered!

Bees Roux pays victim's family R750k, walks free
PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - Sep 09 2011 18:24

Blue Bulls rugby player Jacobus "Bees" Roux walked out of the Pretoria High Court a free man on Friday after being given a suspended sentence on charges of culpable homicide and drunken driving.

After the case was delayed for hours on Thursday and most of Friday, the defence and state finally came back to court shortly after 4pm with a plea bargain agreement.

Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi sentenced Roux, in accordance with the plea agreement, to five years imprisonment with a conditional suspended sentence also of five years.

The suspension was on condition that he paid the widow of Metro police officer Sergeant Ntshimane Johannes Mogale, who he killed, R750 000 and that he was not convicted again of a violent crime.

If he was he would receive a sentence of direct imprisonment.

Roux was charged with the murder after allegedly beating Mogale (38) to death in August last year.

The incident took place after Mogale apparently pulled Roux over for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

Roux said in an affidavit placed before court during his bail application he had assaulted Mogale while defending himself against theft and attempted robbery by Mogale and would plead not guilty to a murder charge.

Roux's spokesperson James Adams on Friday denied the attack on Mogale had anything to do with racism. He said anyone who knew Roux knew that he was a "gentle giant" and not a racist.

Roux's lawyer Rudi Krause denied that Roux's freedom was "bought".

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said: "The decision to conclude the murder case of Mr Roux by way of plea and sentence agreement was taken after thorough assessment of the evidence and after consultations with the family of the deceased and the investigating officer."

Admittance
Roux, who was initially charged with murder, kissed and hugged his girlfriend Carien du Toit and shook hands with Mogale's family after being sentenced.

In a statement, he admitted causing Mogale's death in a Pretoria street in August last year by repeatedly hitting Mogale's head with his elbow then punching him and throwing him to the ground.

According to the statement, Mogale had pulled Roux over for suspected drunk driving in the early hours of the morning.

When Roux admitted to having a few drinks at a nearby restaurant, Mogale did not arrest him, but took a bottle of whiskey out of the rugby player's car and gave to two of his colleagues in their car.

Mogale then got into the driver's seat of Roux's car and aggressively demanded the PIN number of his bank card before driving with him to an unknown destination.

According to Roux, it was clear to him that Mogale was on a criminal frolic of his own. He decided to attack Mogale because he feared for his life.

He said he was "a large person with unusual physical strength" who had found himself in an emergency situation, and said he had "anguished over this incessantly ever since the incident".

"I realise that I should have stopped any further assault on the deceased when he landed on the road outside the car.

"I was in a state of agitation and turmoil as a result of the incident, the likes of which I'd never experienced before.

'I pleaded with him to pull through'
"According to state witnesses, I proceeded to assault the deceased where he was prone on the ground by hitting him with clenched fists ... I was screaming and yelling at bystanders to call the police and ... at a stage when the deceased had evidently lost consciousness, I proceeded to plead with him to wake up so that he would 'pull through'.

"I admit I exceeded the boundaries of private defence and although I had no intention to murder the deceased, assaulted him and negligently failed to foresee my actions might cause his death," Roux said.

He said he had no prior history of violence and that everyone who knew him described him as a "gentle giant".

According to Roux, Mogale must have stolen his wallet, because it was nowhere to be seen after the incident.

Roux expressed remorse about what he had done and said he had approached Mogale's family and asked for their forgiveness.

Roux's attorney Rudi Krause said "forgiveness was asked and given" during a long and emotional meeting with Mogale's family. -- Sapa

Bees Roux (Gallo)
Johannesburg - Rugby player Bees Roux, convicted of culpable homicide last week, should know this week if his suspension from the Blue Bulls would be lifted, according to a report on Monday.

His agent, James Adams, told Beeld newspaper that his contract with the Pretoria based Bulls rugby side would be handled "internally" this week.

Roux was suspended after he beat a metro police officer, Johannes Mogale, to death last August.

On Friday, he was sentenced to five years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, on charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence, in terms of a plea bargain agreement with the State.

The conditions included that he pay Mogale's family R750 000 and that he not be convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for a violent crime within the next five years.

Rapport newspaper reported on Sunday that Roux did not have the cash to make the payment.

Adams told the Afrikaans Sunday paper that Roux was busy asking "every player, friend and family member" to contribute money.

"We will get the money," said Adams. "My first priority now is to get him a job, either locally or overseas."

Adams told Beeld that Roux took the weekend to "think" about what to do.

"He just took this weekend to think. We will handle the matter of getting the money during the course of this week."

Adams said Roux's legal costs were around R300 000 and that his girlfriend had taken out a second bond on her house.

At the time of his bail application, Roux said that the Bulls paid him R800 000 per year.
