And there was talk of giving Rathbone gametime at outside centre during the trials but I don't know if that actually occurred?
There's also the selection headache for when McCabe returns.........

Can't disagree - even a rusty Horwell is probably better than 80% of the locks in Aussi S15.
I'd say half a game at a guess.

I'm thinking they will have a backrower on the bench due to the untested nature of the starting 3.. Considering Gill, Shatz and Quirk are all capable of playing blindside, It might make more sense to have C.Browning on the bench since he can play 8 and provides a bit more physicality.
It depends what they intend to do with Horwill as well..

I think it's probable there will be a 5/2 bench split especially since Horwill is unlikely to play more then 60min, also link might want insurance on the back-row since it is the unknown quantity In the Reds team and to counter the Pocock threat.

Thanks Scott for the Reds trial game report. Anyone (Brumby Jack?) able to report on the Brumbies V ACT trial? The match report on the Brumbies website is okay but it would be nice to get other perspectives, including info about the ACT players who might step up to super level.

We can go with a 5:2 split, especially if Fainga'a is fit. Frisby, Lucas, Morahan & Harris all cover multiple positions.
Shatz isn't match fit, neither is Horwill, plus you'd like a specialist blindside incase Quirk is off his game.

I agree Cyclo. I think the Ponies my sneak home in this one. They have the home ground advantage but perhaps the biggest reason is how last season ended.
It wasn't the Reds doing but ever since they got done by the Blues and we picked up that fourth try against the Tahs I'm pretty sure they at least subconsciously started preparing for this game.
They will want this one BAD.

I think that Brumbies pack looks damn good, the Reds not bad, but question marks over Horwill and Schatz I guess. Brumbies the edge there. 2 good backlines, each with a couple of danger players and some decent finishers. Not a lot in it. That said, it'll probably be 6-3, like too many Aus derbies. I hope not.

I would start Horwill with AWH who along with Gill by all reports has been our best in the two trial matches. I think the Reds can win this up front the pack has been playing well as a unit & Horwill will add that little bit more muscle with Simmons to finish the last 25 minutes.
Our backs (the Reds) have been making a lot of simple mistakes in the trials which has gifted the opposition good field position so we need to cut down the handling mistakes.

For the Brumbies I think their starting 15 is almost settled with the only problem being who will start on the wing. 3 into 2 won't go and I would not be at all surprised if Clyde Rathbone starts in this match. 3 tries in 2 trial matches is hard to ignore even if they were just trials.
He seems to be further ahead in his return than probably even Jake expected but even if he plays 40 minutes thats 40 more than most would have ever thought. His experience would also count in his favour against a team that did the double over them last year.

Great way to kick of the season! Can't wait for this game, particularl given that the winner could be the team that takes the lead in the Aus conference (at least for the first part of the tournament). Two strong teams on paper. The bookies have the Brumbies as slight favourites and I think that's fair. Traditionally I've noticed (in NRL and Super R) that home ground advantage seems to be more of a telling factor in the opening round than it does in the subsquent rounds. With that said the Reds managed to steal a win against the Tahs last year and could do the sme this year. Both teams look to be strong in the set piece so I'll wager this one's going to come down to the halves. Lucas/Cooper v White/LF. I'm hoping Cooper really turns it on this year.
All I really want to see is some positive rugby and some meat pies.

These were my impressions following Friday's match.
Overall, the Brumbies looked very sharp. The starting scrum and rolling maul were particularly strong. No scrum collapses that I can recall until most of the front row had been replaced. Two very strong rolling mauls at the start of the game, one leading to Pocock's try, and then it was put away. The backline was well drilled and broke the defensive line regularly. Three or four meat pies scored directly from good, attacking backline play. Combination of To'omua at 10 and Lealiifano at 12 worked exceptionally well, and would have looked even better if Christian's first three passes hadn't gone to ground. The whole team's fitness looked spot on - game played in mid-30s temp and high humidity, but no-one faltered. Rained in the second half and handling then became difficult.
Players in the ACT team to stand out were Schwanapoel who might earn a spot on the bench this week, Van der Valt, Staniforth who had a massive game at the line out and in the open, and the No 8 and No 12 (didn't get their names).
A highlight of the second half was an enormous charge up the middle by Scott Sio. He has remarkable pace for such a big man.
Man of the match imo was Ben Mowen, but it's hard at a distance to sometimes distinguish between Ben and Scott Fardy. Others to shine included Jesse Mogg, Clyde Rathbone (2 tries - one at the end of a classic backline move and the other where he had to beat the covering defence to the line), Christian, Nic White, and the entire starting scrum. Andrew Smith continues to improve at 13 and showed some good footwork on occasions and is very adept at setting his wingers up.
Looks like Jake took my advice and will start Rathbone this weekend.
