Christchurch to miss out

Hope this isn't true, but it looks like Christchurch may miss out on RWC matches. (Where I was going to be based, among many other Australians, no doubt.)

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-union/u...s-out-on-world-cup-report-20110315-1buzh.html

But the Telegraph online said on Tuesday that the report on the state of the stadium was "bleak" and showed it "will not be fit for purpose in time for the start of the tournament in September".

It said the IRB had promised all games would still be played in New Zealand.

The decision is likely be confirmed by the IRB and the New Zealand government in the next 48 hours, the report said.

Yep. my whole World Cup tour is based around Christchurch. I think I'll wait for an official announcement though.... British papers love to be a bit sensationalist.

I have a mate in the same boat and he's more or less resigned to the fact that he'll be based somewhere else for the duration.

You would have to think it is likely that they will keep it on the south island. The concern then is the limitations on stadium size, meaning that some ticket holders may have to miss out?

We have three weeks over there during the pool matches with the plan to be in christchurch each weekend amongst trips to wanaka, queenstown and Marlborough region. Now just have to hope games are moved to Dunedin and Nelson at the times that work in with us!

The quarters will be at eden park, no questions.

The other games will be more interesting and I am pretty sure the organisers don't fully know yet.

Why don't we in Oz hold out our hand to our Kiwi cousins and offer to hold the RWC Christchurch games in Sydney. Those rich bastards from ANZ Bank can pay for the stadium at cost price (doing their bit to help Kiwiland seeing they make a shitload of money there), the ARU could do the admin and we could hand all the profits to the NZRU, or the Canterbury RU. Some generous hotels could offer to put up all those who'd booked in Chch at mates' rates and the airlines could get in on the act. OK, (some of) those who'd planned to watch RWC games in Chch won't go to Homebush but I'd bet London to a brick we'd get a lot bigger crowds in Sydney than Chch. I, for one, would be prepared to drag all of my mates (and you lot) out to Homebush to do my bit for our Kiwi cousins. There'd be a couple of hundred thousand Kiwis here who'd jump at the chance to help their fellow countrymen if they could.

What about it, JON?

Not sure it is JON that is the stopper here. Pretty sure there is some kiwi pride on the line with this tournament.

Poor buggers it looks highly unlikely that they will be able to hold the games. The qtr's will be in Auckland no doubt. I would imagine the caketin will pick up a couple as well. Dunedin with their absolute beauty of a new stadium will get a couple of games I would imagine, pretty sad stuff for the Cantabs.

There is a meeting today between the IRB and the organisers. They will know the changes after that, but the 1/4s are definitely in Auckland.

It's official, Christchurch games to be moved

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/rugby-world-cup/4773298/Christchurch-loses-Rugby-World-Cup-games

"McCully said the two quarter-final matches would go to Auckland and five the pool matches would be divided between other venues. He hoped some of these would remain in the South Island.

The teams that were to have played in Christchurch were Australia, England, Argentina, Italy, Georgia, Scotland and Russia.

McCully offered a heartfelt apology to Christchurch residents and Mayor Bob Parker for the decision that had to be made.

He said the damage was just too great for the Government and organisers to be able guarantee the stadium would be ready in time. The stadium may well not be available for the next Super Rugby season.

McCully also said there was an issue around finding enough accommodation for fans."

Knew it was coming, but it is still a shame. I have always enjoyed visiting chch, and was looking forward to going back there for the cup.

Are there any grounds in the south island with the same or greater capacity that jade has? This could cause some issues.

None greater, the biggest would be the new Dunedin stadium, which at roughly 30000 RWC mode capacity is well short of the 44000 lancaster park was going to hold.

No problems with being reallocated as per story below. Just got a lot of rearranging of travel plans to do. Hopefully the Eng v Argentina and Wallabies v Italy are both heading to Dunedin as I have tickets for both.

Will probably be Queenstown for snowboarding instead of Mt Hutt if that's the case, and a Speights Brewery Tour...

Wonder if travel insurance will cover all the changes?

•Stadium Christchurch requires extensive repairs, timeframes uncertain
•Quarter finals reallocated to Eden Park
•Pool matches to be reallocated to other RWC 2011 venues
•Existing ticket holders to be offered refund or tickets to reallocated matches

Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) Tournament partners have today reluctantly decided that Christchurch will be unable to host the seven matches scheduled to be played at Stadium Christchurch and these will be rescheduled to be played at other venues in New Zealand.

The decision was unanimously supported by Tournament owners the International Rugby Board, the New Zealand Government, the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) and Tournament organiser Rugby New Zealand 2011 (RNZ 2011).

This follows a detailed review of reports assessing damage to key Tournament facilities and infrastructure caused by the devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the city on February 22 and advice from the stadium operator, Vbase that it could not provide an absolute assurance that all necessary remedial work could be completed in time for RWC 2011. A copy of the correspondence received yesterday from Vbase can be found here.

International Rugby Board Chairman Bernard Lapasset travelled to Christchurch for today’s announcement.

“Yesterday we were informed by Stadium Christchurch operator Vbase that it could not guarantee that the extensive repairs required for both the stadium structures and the playing surface could be completed in time. That information means that Tournament partners have been left with no choice but to make the difficult decision to reallocate the seven matches due to be played in Christchurch.

“This has been a hard decision for all involved, given the place of Canterbury in New Zealand Rugby and the tremendous enthusiasm and support that the people of Christchurch have displayed for RWC 2011. The thoughts of the global Rugby family continue to be with the people of Christchurch and everyone affected as they focus on the city’s rebuilding process and repair of key public services and facilities.”

Ticket purchasers for all Christchurch matches will be offered the option of a refund or the opportunity to secure tickets to the relevant reallocated matches. RNZ 2011 has confirmed there will be sufficient availability of tickets to rescheduled matches for those wanting to take up that option. Full details will be provided by the end of March. For further ticketing information please visit www.rugbyworldcup.com/tickets.

Vbase has indicated that the repair timeframes are so tight there would be no leeway for work delays or for any risks. This prevents Vbase giving assurances that it can meet its RWC 2011 obligations.

Among the “risks” identified by Vbase:

•Ongoing investigation required that might reveal the need for further work in relation to structures and playing surface
•Complexity of a work programme that includes superficial and structural repairs and full replacement of the playing surface
•Availability of resources (labour, material and equipment) and timeliness of securing consents
•Aftershocks that might impact on the work programme

“We know Cantabrians are passionate about Rugby and we know that many wanted the matches to remain as a way to unite and heal their shattered city,” said RNZ 2011 Chairman Brian Roche.

“However, we needed to weigh up the risks of continuing with matches in Christchurch with just 25 weeks to kick-off to the world’s third largest sporting event. Sadly, we collectively agreed the risks were too great. The timeframes for repairs were too tight, the uncertainty too much.”

“Our hearts go out to Canterbury fans today given the inevitable disappointment this decision will cause for many,” said NZRU CEO and RNZ 2011 director Steve Tew.

“Tournament partners are looking into a number of initiatives that will give Cantabrians a chance to be part of our Stadium of Four Million. We still want them to play a part in hosting a successful Tournament and to share in the excitement of this event.”

Contingency planning is at an advanced stage, but the process of allocation of matches is complex with many factors to consider, including accommodation, transport and broadcast logistics.

Eden Park is confirmed as the venue for the quarter-finals of October 8 and 9 and a decision regarding where the five pool matches will now be played will be taken jointly by the Tournament’s partners as soon as feasibly possible, likely before the end of March.

“Eden Park was the only logical alternative to stage two of the Tournament’s premier matches given the ground capacity and visitor accommodation demands associated with these quarter-final matches,,” said RNZ 2011 CEO Martin Snedden.

“We are working hard to ensure as many pool matches as reasonably possible remain in the South Island. A key consideration in all of this is to reschedule matches in a way that minimises the impact on other matches and therefore causes the least disruption to existing arrangements for teams and travelling.

“We appreciate this is a time of great uncertainty for fans which is why we are trying to resolve all issues as quickly as possible.

“We are enormously grateful for the support of all our partners in New Zealand during this difficult process and in particular the strenuous efforts by Vbase in attempting to meet our requirements.”

Because I don't want to go to fucking Sydney, I bought tickets for World Cup matches in New Zealand. I am also going to tour there for a couple of weeks & see games in other centres. If it goes to Sydney it totally screws any plans. The only good scenario for me is if the pool games I have tickets to go to Dunedin, and seeing as they are the only stadium on the South Island that comes close to the Christchurch stadium for capacity it would make sense for them to go there.

Dunedin has around a 30k capacity, so around 10k less than Jade. I was to go to the opening two pool games featuring England v Argies & Oz v Italy... a double header if you will. I hope they are moved to Dunedin, or I just won't be able to go.

I assume they are sell outs which means a lot of people are going to miss out if they move them to dunedin. I also hope the first few are there as it suits my travel plans of wanaka and qt for the first two weeks. I then hope for Nelson for the last pool game as we have booked cabins in marlborough for the third week of the tournament.

I'm assuming they aren't sold out because of this paragraph

Ticket purchasers for all Christchurch matches will be offered the option of a refund or the opportunity to secure tickets to the relevant reallocated matches. RNZ 2011 has confirmed there will be sufficient availability of tickets to rescheduled matches for those wanting to take up that option.

And the fact that they have said the preference is to keep the games on the South Island.

Keeping my fingers crossed I have read it correctly anyway. Also Dunedin isn't scheduled to have a game until the following Wednesday.
Whatever they do you'd think that both these games would be played at the same venue on the same dates as a lot of people would already have tickets to both.
