SouthernX, I don't think it is Kafe or Marto's lack of tests that is the problem. Look how popular Kearns & Horan are as commentators. For that matter, how many tests did Gordon Bray play?
It doesn't seem that there are very many popular commentators, across all sports for that matter. But success on the field is not a prerequisite. My favourite commentary teams are the ABCs cricket team and, off the top of my head, the most successful cricketer amongst the regular team is Kerry O'Keefe.
This thread is really interesting because it shows how much preferences differ in relation to sports commentary. For example, TSR rates Kerry O'Keefe and can't stand Gordon Bray; whereas I am the exact opposite. I don't think the broadcasters have much chance of ever pleasing a majority of viewers.
Bill McLaren was the God of rugby commentary he had that Morgan Freeman-esque quality to his voice that you could listen to for hours.
