Hats off to another emerging Aussie sporting star. Toby Price in his debut rally has just won a stage in this awesome event, moving to third overall in the motorbikes section of the race. An unbelievable effort from him. Not only is the Dakar a test of riding and navigation skills, but it tests the mental strength of the competitors, their endurance abilities and ability to work under extreme pressures of tiredness, extremes of temperatures and unforgiving (though unbelievable) landscape. It will be a fantastic achievement if he's able to hold on for a podium finish.

The Odyssey continues in 2016. Dakar rally must be one of the most exciting sporting events outside of rugby. And besides, the landscapes on show throughout Argentina, Bolivia and Chile are just mind blowing. Catch a half hour replay each night on SBS at 5pm.

Toby Price again doing himself and the nation proud, having won three stages already this year and lying second overall in the motor bikes category after five stages, 35 seconds only behind the leader.

Some of the funniest coverage you'll see when a couple of competitors come face to face going in opposite directions at full pace, both thinking they have the navigation right. The people involved are surely some of the most intrepid sports people around.

I might just be talking to myself, but I salute another true Aussie sporting hero. Toby Price from Maitland has taken out the motorcycle section of this year's Dakar Rally, at only his second attempt. He is the first to have won this gruelling and prestigious event at only the second attempt, and that after finishing third in his rookie year last year. An absolute champion effort.

By his own account, in 2013 he broke three vertebrae in his neck and now has eight bolts and three rods holding his head in place. As well as being an obvious champion rider, he was acknowledged for his outstanding navigational skills, and that, it has to be said, is a very important part of conquering Dakar. Getting lost in the wilds and deserts of Argentina, Bolivia and in years when they go there, Chile is nobody's idea of fun.

The Dakar is a gob-smacking event and it would be well worthwhile putting up a video of some of the highlights if anyone has them so maybe a few more sporting tragics can discover this unbelievable contest of men against machines, each other and nature.

Well done Toby. Hope you get a nomination for sportsman of the year, and continue to have success at upcoming Dakars for us to enjoy.

Well, it's on again in 2017 with Aussie Toby Price wearing the No 1 tag as the defending champion. Good luck to Toby and three other Aussies in the motor bike category.

SBS coverage starts on Jan 3 from 5.40 - 6.00 pm.

Commiserations to Toby who crashed out with a broken leg on Stage 4, after taking the win on Stage 2. Three other Aussies in the bikes category, but none in a position to challenge atm. Still, just competing and hoping to finish are big wins in themselves in this contest.

Congratulations once again to Toby Price for finishing third in Dakar 2018, after a devastating injury in the 2017 edition left him unable to ride a bike until just 6 weeks before this year's event. Fantastic effort from the man dubbed "King of the Desert" by a team mate at KTM.
