Pacific Nations Cup
Fiji 23 (Tries: Nemia Soqeta, Ben Volavola, Eremasi Radrodro Conversion: Seremaia Baikeinuku Penalties: Seremaia Baikeinuku 2) defeated Tonga 18 (Tries: Pila Iongi, Tane Takulua Conversion: Tane Takulua, Penalties: Tane Takulua 2)

Tonga led 15-0 at half time.

As a Rebels fan I was interested to see that Eddie Aholelei started at prop for Tonga.

Important result for Fiji, it's part WC qualifying I'm pretty sure. IIRC, double round robin over this year and next, top 2 go through and number 3 will play Europe 2 with the winner through automatically and the loser into the Repechage.

Decent squad. Ford, Strauss, Jones and Lamont as the ones who miss, you'd assume the middle 2 at least will get a run in game 2. Wilson is an interesting call, good to see Ruaridh backed in over Horne at 10, and Hoyland to start as well.

Chuck in a few injured and developing boys and you have the makings of a strong squad heading towards 2019, everybody but Lamont and Ford should be young enough to make it and 80% of them should still be in prime rugby years.

Some Fiji 7's players in their 15's squad. but no Jarryd Hayne.

Yes there is an injury risk, but that exists on the 7's training park as well. I think some rugby is better than no rugby, and commercially it would increase interest in the game if the Hayne Plane was involved.

I think these games count towards world cup qualification so I think it's understandable they wouldn't play someone who has never played XV's before. And if Hayne has any shot of making the olympics he needs to be focusing 100% on his fitness at the moment anyway.

In slightly irrelevant news, Cooper Vuna has gotten his switch to Tonga approved by World Rugby, so will play for the Sevens in Monaco tommorow amd Sunday, before flying out to play for the XVs in their final mid year international. Well done him.

Georgia seem to snag a few coaches from the wider Oz coaching group, Tim Lane's had a stint there and didn't John Muggleton help out some years ago. Anyways, there are probably skills the Lelos pigs to teach RG.

On another note, is Tbilisi far enough away from Brisbane?

Fiji 26-16 Samoa which gives them their fourth straight Pacific Nations Cup.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/81212371/osborne-try-gives-fiji-pacific-nations-cup-win-and-title

Still one match left, Tonga v Samoa next week but still plenty to play for as the top two teams over this & next year's Cup qualify for RWC 2019 whereas the 3rd-placed team has to play off v a European side. Given the problems PI teams sometimes have accessing their players, direct qualification would seem to be a far better option..........
