I attended a few of the games today (from the 2nd half of the ISA-CAS game onwards), and I must say I was somewhat disappointed with the standard of play, in general.
All the games were quite stop-start, with lots of handling errors. This is understandable considering the fact that the teams (particularly GPS) hadn't had much time together, and there was also a heavy downpour at one stage, but it still would have been nice to see some more cohesive rugby.
Results wise ISA defeated CAS, and GPS won both games against CHS, but all of them were close.
In terms of individual performances, I thought Crichton, the Scots #8, was outstanding (MOTM), while McGregor (View #10) had a very strong game. Both showed great strength in the collision - consistently getting over the advantage line, with Crichton in particular carrying multiple defenders with him every time he got the ball.
Tom Wright (#11 Joeys), was very, very good in general play, and at one point made arguably the best breaks I've seen in a long time, from inside his own 22. Based on this performance he will be a serious threat for the rest of the season, and could be a contender for NSW 1s.
On that note Hutcho (View 13.) was quiet by his usual standards, but he was impressive in the contact zone, consistently swerving out of; ducking; and bouncing off tackles - at no stage was he wrapped up by the first tackler.
Jum Woodhill (Shore #7) and Jack Hayson (View #6) were strong in the 2nds, and were both rewarded with substantial game time in the 1sts. Fotukava (View #1) also made great use of his limited time in the 1s with some effective ball running and hard work.
Connor O'Shea (Joeys #10) was tenacious in the 2nds, with consistently effective runs. I think that, at times, he overplayed his hand a little bit, but in general he gave a great performance.
Other good performances by GPS boys include: Freeman (View #15), Sepesa (New. #14), and Beau Peterson (View #5), who all put in convincing performances.
From a coaching/technical perspective, it was great to see lots of boys staying on their feet and implementing some leg drive. It's one of those small things I like to see, and it was very effective - guys like Crichton gained so many extra metres through this.
On a non-GPS note, who is the CHS 2nds #8? He was huge, and wasn't too bad a player.
