Practically a specialist THP, but could conceivably move over to LHP in emergencies. He's too good at THP to consider it long-term tho.

Alexander and Ma'afu completely smashed Woodcock and Afoa this evening.

Yeah really impressed with Salesi. Last year he looked like all he wanted to do was pick a fight, but the last 12 months he's come on like a freight train.

Agree. Either Salesi has got a whole lot better or Woodcock has got a whole lot worse. Probably a bit of both. Now we just need to get Salesi's brother in a team somewhere. I just love the idea of a guy with a name like Campese playing in the front row.

You're a Uni guy and sound like a scrum guy. Is 21 y.o. Paddy Ryan any good as a THP - good enough to be on the bench next year?

Or too early to tell?

Done. Check the Pirates team playing in Canberra today.

Actually if you want an interesting bit of news: Pete Niumata turned out for the Renegades today and played ON THE WING! :)

Years. One thing I never got to grips with was THP. I'm primarily a loosehead these days, though hooker was on the resume at one point. I play THP very occasionally and its just all different and weird.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but how many years?

Oh. Well its 2 at this club (didn't play prop first year) and then a long break before another 3 years as a younger man. I had some good teachers though.

Should point out that before I discovered the gym and large portions, I did play a couple of times in the backline. Never really fast enough though.

I think he's ready this year if they need him. When he played Shute Shield last year he went well against Pek Cowan, Nic Henderson and Kepu. I think he actually outscrummed Kepu in the GF. He had a great battle with Jerry Yanuyanu in the JWs v Runners game the other day. He's got bigger and fitter after an off season in the tahs academy and spending a lot of time with Michael Foley won't have hurt him. He'd probably struggle for the first couple of games like everybody, but I'd back him to perform.

Well that explains your dislike for backs: you had to hang around with them for a while.

They're nice to have as wingmen after the game. The girls see their foppish hair and boyish good looks and start circling. Then when they realise that the backs only want to swap manicure hints, they talk to the real men.

All joking aside, I could never do backline defence. Standing near the ruck and just hammering the first bloke who picks up the ball is WAY easier than having to decide who to tackle.

Back to the topic: Palmer got on last night and despite the long hair (fire him from the prop's club) showed he's in decent shape, scrum-wise.

Neither can Quade, but he's a kinda handy ;)

Nah seriously, backs defense is good if you can tackle and know how to pilfer - you get about 4 seconds of free time to steal the ball before any real reinforcements arrive on the setpiece.

I just hope Palmer gets game time for Aus's sake, he looked bloody good again scrummaging last night. Stable and unmoveable.

One of your best NTA

Thanks for that about Paddy Ryan. It's been more or less my opinion of him though I didn't think he looked that fit running around the park against the Runners - but neither did Palmer.

Yeah, access to Foley will do him no harm at all. He's tall for a THP but height never bothered Carl Hayman too much.

As PB would say: I will look at the Uni scrum in the next Shute Shield with hawk eyes.

Palmer did look very good, but unfortunately I don't think he packed down against Henderson at all, only Longbottom. That makes it a bit hard to gauge a scrummaging performance it was. I like his shape, though. He keeps straight and low and just drives straight through them. At least his long hair looks like it is due to neglect rather than preening.

The hair will fit in at the show ponies
