Regarding Grammar change ups...

I wasn't there but sounds like these change ups had a big bearing on the result. At schoolboy level, it is patently clear those who have had good coaching and seeing the technical side of the game executed well at this level is a pleasure to watch. The boys who are coachable and can put the learnings into practice are the standouts in any side. Exceptions are boys like Savage who is one of the most naturally gifted ball runners I've seen. What a match winner - the guy he replaced must be a gun! How do you coach what he has done in the last 2 games?!

Also great to see coaches who have had an impact at the under age level go on and be successful at a senior level with grade minor premierships etc illustrating the methodology and mentoring is very transferable from boys to men.

Was Ipswich Grammar getting pipped by TGS in the u16s a surprise? How many U16s are in their First XV?

Re : IGS and TGS 16's ......nah not really .

If anything I would have expected TGS to do them a bit more comfortably

TGS 16's have only lost their 10 upstairs ( Baxter Franey ) who is playing 15 for T Ba . They have a few boys who gave it a real nudge and must have come pretty close ( and a very very good players - 5/6 , 9 and 12 ) , however , TGS Seconds look like they are as deep as the Lockyer Valley floor ( at least in the view from the top of the Range ) and will be hard to beat this year ( as will NC and BBC 2nds teams ) which probably provided additional obstacles for these U16 boys in T Ba.

IGS have lost their 9 and their 12 upstairs ( who is playing wing ) ....however their dominant 8 they had in their under age teams is now at BSHS . They were running his identikit in preseason ( from the age group below ) to give them the same power punch but not sure whether this is experiment is ongoing .

EDIT 2/8 : IGS also have a talented utility from their 16's playing wing in the Firsts . Has played blindside flank in underage teams of this year group and also represented QLD League at Fullback last year ( if memory serves ) Might be one of the most versatile defenders in his age group

And a bit of perspective is not a bad thing here .....all Schools in the Competition have excellent Coaches who have been there and done that . They wouldn't be where they are of they didn't know their business.

So yes ........it is heartening to see a School like Grammar have some success - even if it only moral victories that can be claimed at this stage . They choose not to do it the same way as other Schools and work with what they have got - and spend (what would seem to be) a lot of time in preparatory game planning to deal with teams that on paper would seem to be superior. Throw in the unorthodox and they are competitive and right in the mix of the games they are contesting. Good on them .

Their front row is very very good , their line out set piece is very simple but very effective and Dennis Waight and Daejern Asi are as talented as anyone from anywhere else . The heart and soul of their team , to me , is Oscar Skerman who personifies their overall discipline and commitment - with impact and proving that you don't need to meet the superficial measurements to be a balls out Rugby player . Good on ya bloke.

I wish them well this season and hope they can chalk up some wins that they deserve

If Skerman was the BGS no8 he played way above his weight - he looked tiny out there but ran, tackled and toiled all game like a big unit.

Both TGS 1st's and 2nd's were not the same teams that played Downlands due to quite a number of injuries. Due to injury the 1st's had a second U16 (grade 10) playing at 12. Also the U16's lost one of their other stars with a season ending injury during 1st trials during term 2. The kid played 13 15a's last year.

Sorry had to be early this week.

TGS vs TSS
The Toowoomba Grammar boys are super excited. This year they play TSS at home so they get to head down to the beach, maybe even a swim in their beige king gee work shorts. Last time they had their shirts off for a swim was at GPS swimming this year. I heard they just give the TGS boys a special lane to themselves in the warm-up pool, where they can all still touch the bottom and let them paddle around there while everyone else competes in the big scary pool. However, supervision is a must, as unfortunately someone nearly drowned in the wash down showers, but they managed to pull him out alive, just in time. Anyway, before the TGS boys strut their bright red V’s just below their necks from their work shirt tan against the pale white skin of the rest of their torso and get chased up the beach by waves at Surfers Beach on Saturday arvo, they will need to front up against the big dogs of TSS. TSS made light work of BSHS on the weekend and this week they are at home in the Shark Tank, home crowd, big crowd and vocal crowd and some fresh meat thrown in as well. From the headmaster to the nerdiest kid in prep year, everyone at TSS is humming the music from Jaws. Unquestionability they are an All-Star team (massive fan of the 9), but alas, I think that will be TSS’s weakness.…. Hear me out before you tune out.I think they may be a little cocky and have already chalked this one up. See TGS aren’t scared and whilst many think that the average TGS student is as dumb as a box of rocks, I actually don’t think that’s the case. These are mountain boys and tough as nails and hence the reason they aren’t scared, and….. Saturday is going to be one hell of a dog fight. Luckily, as every single TGS boys knows, when there is a dog fight in the cattle yards, over a fresh set of bush oysters, laying in the dust at branding time…… always, always bet on the skinny dog. BGS v Churchie
The money round! BGS vs Churchie, yep they are the most elite and prestigious schools in Brisbane, and this is more of a show of money and power, with a game of rugby thrown in to provide the venue. In fact, more akin to an episode of Real House Wives of Brisbane. Now these two schools are pretty familiar with each other, Brisbane Grammar is where all the medicos like to send their kids, particularly the smart Asian doctors that specialise in cosmetic surgery or run addiction clinics, so they will know a heap of the of the Churchie mum’s quite well already. It ’s really more like a big family get together. Now Churchie have been rating themselves and not without good reason, they were capable in the trials. But BGS are starting to find their mojo and their coach is teaching a bunch of skinny kids “from the right side of the tracks” how to play some decent footy. He has street cred, having beaten the Wallabies single handily when he played for Munster a while back. This smells like an upset, with tears, tantrums and foot stomping, and it won’t be over Mrs Barrington-Jones’s left nipple being slightly more elevated than her right. BGS by 4

Nudgee vs IG
Ipswich Grammar you poor buggers. Defeat snatched from the jaws of Victory last weekend when the Farmers slotted one from the side at the full time to win, nearly as sad a day for you as when KFC axed the Tower burger in 2010 and it seemed to happen with just as little warning. Apparently the 5 Swich boys that were pounding out war cries were gutted, but they raised enough for a “street wise” deal from KFC on the way home because some nice people threw some money in front of them as they thought they were a busking barber shop quartet (must be the stripy blazers that caused confusion). Anyway, off to Ross Oval this weekend against my boys at Nudgee. I am sorry Swich boys, we will be way too solid. Nudgee are the real deal, they were clinical against the Cardinals last weekend and they will be far too strong for the boys from Ipswich. Jangla Bennett caused havoc against the red and black, and I expect that he will do it with ease again this weekend. Must feel like Christmas is coming for the blue and white this weekend, fronting up against Ippy on their beloved Ross Oval, I can hear the sleigh bells ringing…..Jingle Jangala. The Nudge by 15.

BSHS v GT

OK, so it will be Terrace’s turn to go to the contaminated landfill site this weekend, (what do you know about lead?) of BSHS grounds. I saw a magpie with two heads the last time I was there, bloody scary. Anyhow Terrace are looking ok and the will rate themselves as a chance this game however the BSHS boys are a bit hungry and they weren’t dreadful against TSS on the weekend. Both are none from 2 and this will be the chance to put one of them on the board. I reckon BSHS might just have the edge here, the maths would say that GT should win by 7, using Nudgee as the benchmark, but since when has a BSHS rugby player ever worried about maths. BSHS by 2

For future reference please use the more correct term 'Tbar/T-bar' as oppose to loose and sloppy term 'T ba'. Admittedly it's easy for city folk to appear ignorant and make this mistake but it would be greatly appreciated more care is taken in when referring to the town/school in the future. Thank you for taking the time to read this. :)

What has happened with BBC? They are 2/2 but it could be debated if they are deserving of undefeated status and yes I am aware it is only round 2.

The team I watched play Otago at the Suncorp curtain raiser game genuinely looked to be a different team then the team that took the field at Northgate on the weekend. Is it?

BBC were simply woeful on the weekend, quite underwhelming considering expectations and hype.

is BBC suffering from the infamous injury curse? How many are absent from the starting 15 against Otago?

Only 13 Howath and 11 Stirling are out-but Savage -5 tries this year did not play Otago.
So yes-same team.Maybe better with Savage.
Maybe they peaked too early-(my wife says that on occasions)

All the hype was from a few years ago, before they realised they would be playing against more than just the odd 18 year old come First XV time .

The extra year of experience in a program plus physical development makes a massive difference. Only a bit over a handful of U17s in the current Aussie Schools squad of 40 odd gives some perspective .

Correct. Same issue every school apart from TSS and NC have. Who have won last 3 years=team with most 18 year olds.

Speaking of complicated; can anyone please elucidate the rules that pertain to schoolboy scrummaging. In particular the limitation in pushing the opposition backwards? Have these changed since last year?

What did you think were the rules and what’s your reading of what has happened?

Thanks Reg. I was aware that there was a limit to the distance a scrum could be pushed back ; I was getting the impression (rightly or wrongly) that the referees where stopping the push earlier this year.
