Reds, Rebels & Waratahs consider merging operations

I find this whole discussion interesting. Over the past 3 or so years the Reds have slowly been extracting what 'shared' services that they were using at the ARU.

Last year, from about July or August, the Reds took over their own Membership administration & management. A function that was previously managed centrally by the ARU for all/most clubs. If they have done this what is going to make them return to a 'centralised' model?

I can see the logic behind the proposal but I am not sure that sufficient levels of independance will be able to be maintained. Has this been one of the problems for the ARU? They have tried to keep hold of a power base that the individual unions are now deciding that they can make work better & more efficiently.

I can't imagine any of the unions would be willing to cede any power they have, particularly the NSWRU who would be seeming to lose power to the QRU as Jim Carmichael would be the likely head. Although I wouldn't rule out a late Tahs attempt to make Jason Allen the CEO, if it happened.

This is not a terrible idea, it seems to work reasonably well in NZ. Why they are trying to drag the Reds into though is a mystery to me. They are kicking ass off the field. If things were different then I would not be so against it.

Not sure why the Brumbies are exempt and it would to me make more sense for them to be involved with the Tahs and Rebels. They are the 3 clubs that seem to be in most trouble. The Force are lucky to have little competition for sponsors and fans.

Agree about the Reds - I can't imagine the Waratahs board would want to give up control (or the Rebels or Reds, really), and I can't imagine the ARU would want the three (or four or five) enterprises run from Brisbane when the ARU head office is in Sydney.

I can't see how the Reds could win from this in the long term, assuming that they can maintain with their current success off the field.

Well we got away with it with Foles, so another game of pass the parcel could be worth a shot. In that case the CEO's office should be north of the Tweed.

That would be a case of "failing upwards" if it happened.

What the Tahs require is their version of Jim Carmichael.

Reds were very fortunate with Carmichael, it was considered a punt at the time to recruit someone from the AFL community with no rugby union background, but as it worked out, having someone in charge with no connections or debts to the rugby union old boys network let him make decisions without a skewed perception.

20 years ago when Rugby Union had just turned professional and the NRL/AFL were still in a semi-professional state, it made sense to recruit from the finance industry to the board, or promote those from the rugby union fraternity who had university studies behind them. But these days, 'professional sports management' is a highly specialised and niche profession where you need to recruit those who specialise in their area, i think this is where the ARU and state unions have fallen down in the past and i think its the single biggest key to addressing the terminal decline of rugby in australia.. It might be stating the obvious, but rugby needs to start recruiting the best candidates to the executive/managerial positions.

Don't get me wrong, Pulver seems like he knows what he is talking about, but was he really the best choice?? I doubt it..

What the Tahs require is the carrot to be removed from their respective asses.
I'm assuming, FF (Folau Fainga'a), that you incline to the American misspelling of the English language and are asserting that the 'Tahs have had carrots inserted in their anuses. If so, the problem seems to be more deep-seated [intended pun] than we could have imagined. Before proceeding to your very sensible and logical suggestion of removal of an obstruction, surely there should be some inquiry as to the purpose of this bizarre and some might say, unhygienic, practice.

I don't mean to sound all high and mighty, but I'm honestly all for anything that improves union nationwide. If Queensland takes a bit of a short term hit but a streamlined national model raises the other provinces up, then I can definitely wear that. I love this game too much to let petty provincialism get in the way of real, national improvement. I want to see union destroying league one day.

Too many bogans in this country for that to happen Drew.

You assume too much, Bruce.

I was referring to the donkeys that were part of the 2014 Waratahs Membership pack. I was concerned that said donkeys would eat the carrots, which were also part of said Membership pack. The last thing I would want is for Waratahs fans to go hungry.

No point being successful on the field if there's not actually a competition on the field. The Reds want all the provinces to be successful so that there's great interest and value assigned to Super Rugby. They'll always back themselves to perform in those conditions, it just means there's more money in the game for them as well. Which they will also back themselves to get.

Thank God........

The Brumbies' search for a new chief executive was halted by the ARU's plan to centralise Australian rugby operations and merge NSW, Queensland and Melbourne.

The Brumbies didn't want to be involved and potential chief executive candidates were spooked by the prospect of their role being made redundant in the coming seasons.
