Vodacom Cup preview - Round 3
The only two unbeaten sides left in the Vodacom Cup South Section face off in Cape Town on Saturday when DHL Western Province host the EP Kings.
Both these sides have been impressive in the opening fortnight of Vodacom Cup action, with DHL WP grinding out a 17-15 victory over the Sharks XV in Durban last weekend and the EP Kings proving too strong for the Pampas XV in Stellenbosch in the first round (34-26).
It's been more than six years since the team from Port Elizabeth last managed to beat DHL WP in the Vodacom Cup - 10 February 2006 to be precise, when EP won 26-17 at home in the opening round of that year's competition.
WP had the better of the Kings in 2007 (46-5), 2009 (49-13) and 2010 (28-23). They didn't play each other in 2011 and 2008. Saturday's game takes place at City Park in Crawford and kicks off at 16:00.
In the North Section, the Jukskei Derby at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon between the Vodacom Blue Bulls and the MTN Golden Lions, two of the most successful sides in the history of the Vodacom Cup, will attract a lot of attention.
The Vodacom Blue Bulls are still winless in 2012 and the MTN Golden Lions have put their round one defeat to the Leopards behind them with a solid performance last weekend.
On Friday, the Pampas XV and Ford Pumas are in action in East London and Welkom respectively, where they will probably be regarded as favourites against the Border Bulldogs and Griffons, but both sides would have learned the hard way that there are no easy games in the Vodacom Cup.
Also on Friday, the Sharks XV take on the Toyota Free State XV in Bloemfontein in a match that could determine the home playoff aspirations for both these teams.
Tjovitjo for 350 kids
SARU and the Tag Rugby Association introduced rugby to more than 350 kids at four Vodacom Cup schools activations last weekend.
Ten schools brought more than 100 kids to the activation at Mr Price Kings Park (Durban), while 95 kids from four schools went to the coaching clinic at Mbombela Stadium (Nelspruit).
In Johannesburg, nine schools attended the event with more than 90 children taking part in the coaching clinics, and in Bredasdorp more than 60 children participated in the Tag coaching clinics.
This weekend, clinics will be held at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park (Friday at 15h00) and at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Vodacom Cup review - Round 3

JP-du-Plessis-Inaction-120310G300.jpg

DHL Western Province had to dig deep to stay unbeaten in the South Section of the Vodacom Cup, while the Vodacom Blue Bulls got their first win of the season in the North, where the Ford Pumas still lead the way.
A converted try by JP du Plessis in injury time saw DHL WP sneak past a gallant EP Kings side by 30-25 in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon. With 20 minutes left on the clock, the Eastern Cape visitors were still in the lead by 25-14, but they let slip what would've been their first victory against the Capetonians since 2006.
In Pretoria, the Vodacom Blue Bulls finally got their season underway with an emphatic 49-10 victory over the MTN Golden Lions, the home side scoring six tries to the one by their southern neighbours. This win saw the Blue Bulls jump to third on the log of the Northern Section from fifth.
The Valke got their first victory of the 2012 season thanks to a try at the death by replacement scrumhalf Anrich Richter against the Leopards in Kempton Park on Friday afternoon. The home side won this tight encounter by 31-28.
Adriaan Engelbrecht scored a hat-trick of tries for the Leopards, but it was not enough against a resilient Valke side at the Barnard Stadium.
The Sharks XV got back on the winning track after an exciting 51-38 victory over the Toyota Free State XV - who needed a change of jerseys after 15 minutes of the game as both sides started the match in predominantly white - in Bloemfontein on Friday evening. It was a topsy-turvy affair - both sides scored five tries, but the boot of Sharks XV fullback Gouws Prinsloo was the difference in the end.
After leading at the break, the Sharks XV saw the home side fight back to go ahead 38-35 on the score board with 15 minutes to go. But the visitors from KZN kept their composure to score 16 unanswered points in the final stages of the match to clinch the win.
In East London, the Pampas XV beat the Border Bulldogs following a second half blitz by the Argentineans - they were behind by 15-20 at the break and eventually won comfortably by 46-20.
The Ford Pumas still top the log in the North and is one of only three unbeaten teams left in the Vodacom Cup. They were way too strong for the Griffons in Welkom and won 43-12.
In Mossel Bay, the Regent Boland Kavaliers were way too strong for the SWD Eagles and won comfortably by 46-26.

We'll have a north vs south double coming up, Brutes vs Stormers on saturday and then monday its Tukkies (Uni of Pretoria) vs Maties (Uni of Stellenbosch) in the Varsity Cup final on monday.

Varsity Cup semi scores
Tuks 53-24 Pukke
Maties 23-0 UJ

Watch some of the action last night, Maties bashed UJ from the start and lead 21-0 after just about so many minutes just to defend the scoreline. Tukkies had tough match against Pukke and at one stage the Potch boys had a good lead just before half time when they ran out of gas and the Tukkies flaten them in the end. Once again good crowds in and some big Varsity gees going.

Maties, Tuks set for epic clash

Maties vs Tuks (Gallo Images)
Cape Town - It's North v South in the Varsity Cup final on Easter Monday, as FNB UP-Tuks and the FNB Maties go head-to-head at the Tuks Rugby Stadium for the right to lift the trophy in 2012.

Not even the most confident punter in the country would safely bet their hard-earned cash on the outcome of this match, as hosts and the league-topping Tuks attempt to win their first-ever Varsity Cup title.

Having stumbled at the final hurdle last year - going down 16-26 to UCT at the selfsame venue - the men from Pretoria will be much wiser heading into this clash against the three times former winners.

"We deserve to be where we are this year," said Tuks captain and hooker Zane Botha. "We ended top of the log, we won our semi-final and it's our right to host the final in front of our home fans. We're really looking forward to it."

Botha is expecting a physical onslaught from the visitors - "It's what you always expect against the Maties" - but you get the feeling that the home side will welcome that approach from the Maties.

"Maties are always a good team, there's no such thing as a weak Maties side, excellence is in their culture," said the Tuks No 2, who also went on to compare Monday's clash to a club rugby battle of yesteryear.

"In many ways it's similar (to those old club matches)," added Botha, "we're feeling the excitement and we're anticipating a massive crowd which just adds to the occasion."

Of course, given the magnitude of Monday's game, there have been a few jibes going back and forth this week - all adding to the build-up.

"There has been talk of the Maties playing against the Bulls," said Botha, getting straight to the point, "but it doesn't bother us at all. I mean, in reality, all the players that are playing in the Vodacom Cup are Tuks players first and foremost. They made their mark at Varsity Cup level and deserve to have taken the step up."

Tuks have made just one change to their team - from the side which beat NWU-Pukke 53-24 in the semi-finals two weeks ago - as Jono Ross returns from Vodacom Cup duty to take his place at No 8. With Ross back, former SA Sevens player Okkie Kruger moves to No 6, with Wiaan Liebenberg dropping to the bench.

The Maties have also kept changes to a minimum, with coach Chean Roux making two alterations to the side that beat UJ 23-0 in the semi-finals. Up front, Alistair Vermaak starts ahead of Brummer Badenhorst at loosehead prop, whilst the more experienced and tactically astute Donald Stevens will start at scrumhalf ahead of Boela Abrahams.

"As a coaching team we couldn't possibly do any more... I mean, we know what to expect and I'm pretty sure Tuks will know that we'll know what to expect," Roux told varsitycup.co.za.

"All we can do as a team is get our execution right and ensure that we stop their momentum," added the Maties boss.

"They have two major strings to their bow - their momentum and their kicking game; we need to stop them both, although it won't be easy against a team that's been playing the same game - and doing it very well - for the past two seasons."

When asked about the various pre-match mind games, Roux replied in kind: "We finished second on the log, despite beating Tuks in the league phase of the competition, but they deserve to host the final and to go into the game as favourites.

"It's their second home final in a row," he added, "so they'll certainly be feeling the pressure - especially after losing at home last year."

* Meanwhile, two matches will precede Monday's final - the promotion/relegation clash between CUT and UCT (at 14:30) and the Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships final between Steinhoff Dagbreek (Maties) and Steinhoff Vishuis (Shimlas) at 16:30.

Both matches, like the final, will be televised live on SuperSport One and will serve as the official curtain-raisers to the fifth Varsity Cup final which then gets underway at 19:00.

Over 14 000 supporters are expected to cram into the Tuks Rugby Stadium on Monday - with tickets free - whilst, aside from the rugby action, there will be plenty entertainment in Pretoria in the form of top South African group Die Heuwels Fantasties, who will be performing live; in the Fan Park and on the field before kick-off, leading the teams in Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika beforehand too.

The Tuks Fan Park will be based inside the Tuks Rugby Stadium and will link up, via SuperSport, with the Maties Fan Park at the very popular Neelsie Student Centre in Stellenbosch for those Maties fans unable to make the trip up to Pretoria.

Vodacom Cup Review – Round 5

April 15, 2012
The Regent Boland Kavaliers won a nail-biting Vodacom Cup match against the Sharks XV in Malmesbury as only one team remains unbeaten this season as the MTN Golden Lions were too good for GWK Griquas in Kimberley.
Unbeaten DHL Western Province though had to work hard to beat the defending champions, the Pampas XV, in Stellenbosch on Saturday evening. Demetri Catrakilis kicked five penalty goals as the Capetonians won their fifth game of the season, by 20-16, at the Danie Craven Stadium.
In Malmesbury, the Regent Boland Kavaliers beat the KwaZulu-Natalians by 21-19 thanks to a converted try by Brendon April five minutes from fulltime.
The home team outscored their more fancied guests by two tries to one and the victory was just reward for a team that had promised a lot earlier in the season, but had not always delivered.
GWK Griquas were dealt their first defeat of the 2012 Vodacom Cup season as the MTN Golden Lions caused a minor upset to beat the unbeaten team from the Northern Cape by 35-30 on Saturday afternoon.
A converted try by Garth April with less than 15 minutes left in the game sealed it for the visitors, who outscored the home team by four tries to two.
The EP Kings had to fight very hard to beat neighbours SWD Eagles by 27-25 in George on Friday evening, with a last-gasp try by Frank Herne clinching the game for the visitors, a few minutes after the home team took the lead through a try by Clint Wagman.
The result could’ve been different had the Eagles not missed numerous penalty kicks at goal at Outeniqua Park during a game in which the lead changed hands a few times.
The Leopards recorded a 30-19 victory over the Griffons in Welkom on Friday evening, with former Springbok flyhalf André Pretorius kicking 15 points and midfielder Joubert Engelbrecht adding two tries for the visitors from Potchefstroom.
It was only their second win of the season as the Griffons slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat.
The Vodacom Blue Bulls scored seven tries as they trashed the Valke by 49-8 in Pretoria on Friday afternoon, with five of their tries coming in the first half. Jurgen Visser collected a hat-trick of tries, while his fellow speedsters, Sampie Mastriet and Clayton Blommetjies, also crossed for the home team.
On Saturday afternoon, a hat-trick of tries by Nico Scheepers helped the Toyota Free State XV to overcome a brave performance by the Border Bulldogs to beat the visitors from the Eastern Cape by 36-28.
The Bulldogs lead 21-10 at the break and played some of their best rugby of the season, but the Free Staters never gave up and score three quick tries midway through the second half to take command of the game.

Vodacom Cup Review –Round 6

April 22, 2012
DHL Western Province clinched pole position in the South Section of the Vodacom Cup, but the North Section is still wide open with one round of league action to go.
The Capetonians beat the SWD Eagles by 29-14 at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn and
can’t be surpassed at the top of the South Section log.
DHL WP scored four tries to two to move up to 27 points, meaning the Sharks XV (21 points), Pampas XV, EP Kings and Regent Boland Kavaliers (all 20) will play for second spot next week.
In the North Section, GWK Griquas moved back to the top of the log after they edged the Leopards by 42-40 in a high-scoring Vodacom Cup match in Potchefstroom on Friday. The visitors scored 30 points to 13 by the home team in the second half.
The defeat by the Leopards means they now have to rely on other teams to make the playoffs. Three of the top four in the North – GWK Griquas (20 points), Ford Pumas (18) or the Vodacom Blue Bulls (16) – can still play themselves into the top two.
The MTN Golden Lions (third on 17 points) lost their last league match, by 37-33 against the Ford Pumas in Johannesburg, and can’t finish higher than their current position.
Jaco Bouwer (2), Deon Scholtz and Torsten van Jaarsveld scored tries for the team from Mpumalanga as they recorded probably their biggest win of the season.
The other matches all went according to the form book this weekend.
In Durban, Lubabalo Mtembu scored two early tries to help the Sharks XV get their campaign back on track with a 28-18 win over the EP Kings. Although the home team raced to a handy lead early on, they never managed to get away from the plucky Kings, who never gave up as they lost only their second match of the season.
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer would have been happy to see the experienced test prop Tendai Mtawarira come through the first 55 minutes of the game – his first action this year after picking up a serious ankle injury in pre-season.
On Friday, the Regent Boland Kavaliers clinched their win for a second time this season thanks to a late try by winger Brendon April as they came from behind to beat the Border Bulldogs by 45-40 in an open game at the Boland Stadium in Wellington.
The Bulldogs probably deserved more, but are still winless after the Kavaliers pounced on an unforced error by Border to score the match-winner.
In Kempton Park, Griffons flyhalf Reinhardt Erwee produced a 100% kicking performance as his team won their first match of the Vodacom Cup season when they beat the Valke by 38-33.
Erwee kicked six from six and proved to be the the difference between winning and losing as both teams scored five tries apiece.
The defending Vodacom Cup champions, the Pampas XV, handed the Toyota Free State XV a 20-point defeat in Bloemfontein as Santiago Gonzalez Iglesias scored 25 points – including a try, four conversions, three penalties and a dropped goal – in the Argentineans’ 40-20 win at the Free State Stadium.

The winner of the 15th Vodacom Cup will be crowned in a few weeks’ time, but this weekend quarterfinal action takes place in Kimberley, Nelspruit, Durban and Cape Town.

Interestingly, seven of last year’s eight quarterfinalists are back, the only team not making it this year being the Toyota Free State XV. They have been “replaced” in the 2012 playoffs by the EP Kings, who missed out last year after they were docked points for fielding two ineligible players.

The Sharks XV, second in the South Section after winning five from seven, will have their work cut out for them when they host the Vodacom Blue Bulls in the Vodacom Cup quarterfinal round at Mr Price Kings Park in Durban on Saturday afternoon at 14:00.

The Pretorians, who ended third in the North Section with four wins, one draw and one defeat, have been superb in Vodacom Cup playoffs, reaching the final every year since 2006, when the Sharks XV, then still called the Wildebeest, lost in the final to the Valke in Brakpan.

In the history of the competition, the Vodacom Blue Bulls have won the title three times, finished runners up six times, lost in the semifinals once and lost in the quarterfinals once as well.

On the contrary, the KwaZulu-Natalians have only reached one final and lost in five semifinals and one quarterfinal.

Although they have lost three from the last five finals, but the Vodacom Blue Bulls know how to win playoffs. This was perfectly illustrated last year, when they almost went all the way after finishing fourth in the North Section.

In the end, the Pampas XV had too much fire power for the Vodacom Blue Bulls to take their maiden Vodacom Cup title by winning the final by 14-9 in Potchefstroom.

The Argentineans have to travel to Kimberley, where the face GWK Griquas, along with the MTN Golden Lions the most successful Vodacom Cup team ever with four titles. This is the first quarterfinal of the weekend and is scheduled for 15:00 at GWK Park on Friday.

GWK Griquas won the North Section (five wins and one defeat), while the Pampas XV struggled to replicate their 2011 form and finished fourth in the South, winning four and losing three league matches. In their 10 playoff appearances, the team from the Northern Cape have only lost in the quarterfinals once before.

The top side in the South Section and the only unbeaten team thus far this year with seven victories from seven matches, DHL Western Province, will be hoping to avoid a repeat of last year’s quarterfinals when they host the MTN Golden Lions at City Park in Cape Town on Saturday at 15:30.

In 2011, the Capetonians lost their home quarterfinal against the Sharks XV by 21-19. They have only reached the semifinals twice and lost four quarterfinals, but this year DHL Western Province will be looking to go all the way.

The MTN Golden Lions have not had things go their way in 2012 and they finished fourth in the North Section, having won three of their six league matches.

While the Capetonians will take to the field as favourites, they will be mindful of the MTN Golden Lions’ solid playoff record, even though the Gautengers have not gone further than the quarterfinals since winning the last of their four titles way back in 2004.

On Friday evening in Nelspruit, the two quarterfinalists that have the worst playoff record of all the teams that qualified this year, the Ford Pumas and the EP Kings, will square off.

Between them, they have only reached the Vodacom Cup playoffs four times – the Kings have lost both their quarterfinal appearances, while the Ford Pumas have lost one quarter- and one semifinal. The Kings’ playoff record would’ve been better if it wasn’t for last year’s ineligibility debacle.

The Ford Pumas finished second in the North Section by virtue of getting two more bonus points than the Vodacom Blue Bulls as they also won four, lost one and drew one in 2012. The Kings’ record this season reads won five, lost two and they finished third in the South.

Vodacom Cup Review – Quarter-finals

May 07, 2012
It was three from four for teams from the north, but the undoubted highlight of the Vodacom Cup quarter-final round was the Vodacom Blue Bulls’ stunning last-gasp win over the Sharks XV in Durban on Saturday.
DHL Western Province will host the Ford Pumas in Cape Town and the Vodacom Blue Bulls will travel to Kimberley to take on GWK Griquas in next weekend’s two Vodacom Cup semi-finalsas these four teams emerged victorious from their quarter-finals this weekend.
The Vodacom Blue Bulls, last season’s runners up, won a humdinger in Durban when they scored two converted tries in the last four minutes of the match to clinch a thrilling 37-36 victory over the Sharks XV at Mr Price Kings Park.
With less than three minutes left on the clock, the visitors were behind by 36-23, replacement winger Chris Jordaan’s try in the 73rd minute seemingly sealing the win for the KwaZulu-Natalians. But the Vodacom Blue Bulls didn’t give up, especially when Sharks XV hooker Kyle Cooper was sin-binned. First fullback Ulrich Beyers crashed over and SA Under-20 flyhalf Tony Jantjies quickly added the extras.
Then the Vodacom Blue Bulls took the restart and started attacking from deep in their own half when another SA Under-20 player, midfielder Jan Serfontein, outstripped the Sharks XV defence to score alongside the posts. Another two points by Jantjies, under immense pressure, sealed an unlikely win for the visitors.
In Saturday’s second match, unbeaten DHL Western Province had way to much fire power for the MTN Golden Lions as they won this quarter-final by 58-34 at City Park in Cape Town. The home team scored eight tries to the four of the visitors.
DHL WP fullback Kurt Coleman got a hat-trick for his team, while opensider Rohan Kitshoff added a brace. It’s only the third time ever that the Capetonians have reached the semi-finals of the Vodacom Cup – and on both previous occasions (in 2000 and 2008) they got knocked out before the final.
On Friday afternoon in Kimberley, the defending Vodacom Cup champions, the Pampas XV, crashed out against GWK Griquas by 26-18.
GWK Griquas fullback Rudi Vogt scored 21 points through seven penalty goals as the Argentineans’ discipline let them down at GWK Park.
The home team though had to withstand a strong fightback from the Pampas XV – they lead 23-6 with less than 30 minutes to go, but then the visitors launched a strong comeback and actually closed the gap to only five pounts before Vogt put the result beyond any doubt with his seventh penalty goal in the 70th minute.
The Ford Pumas progressed to the semi-finals on Friday evening when they beat an injury depleted EP Kings side by 30-19 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
The team from Mpumalanga never looked like losing and outscored the visitors from the Eastern Cape by four tries to one. The Ford Pumas were simply too physical and solid on defence, while they also used their opportunities better.
Note: The dates, times and venues for the two semi-final matches will be confirmed by the South African Rugby Union in due course. They will appear on www.sarugby.co.za.

Vodacom Cup Review – Semi-finals

May 13, 2012
GWK Griquas will host DHL Western Province, in their first Vodacom Cup final, in Kimberley after the two top sides from the North and South Sections won their semi-finals this weekend.
The two best sides in the competition deservedly advanced to the final. DHL Western Province have not lost once this season, while GWK Griquas – along with the MTN Golden Lions the most successful Vodacom Cup side ever with four titles each – only lost one game in the league phase.
GWK Griquas advanced to their seventh Vodacom Cup final when they were simply too good for the Vodacom Blue Bulls in Kimberley on Friday, winning the first semi-final by 30-17.
It was only the second time in 11 Vodacom Cup semi-final appearances that the Vodacom Blue Bulls lost, but this time they simply could not get going. Despite dominating territory and possession in the first half, the visitors were still behind at the break, by 15-5, as GWK Griquas made better use of their opportunities, Leon Karemaker and Rocco Jansen scoring tries.
The home side were supreme in the scrums and also defended very well. The Blue Bulls pulled back late in the first half when Sampie Mastriet scored, but then went further behind again when their former team-mate Francois Brummer crossed the chalk.
Midway through the second half, Jan Serfontein and Daniel Adongo scored to close the gap and set up a thrilling end to see the Vodacom Blue Bulls behind by only 17-22 with ? minutes to play, but Griquas kept their composure and sealed the win at the death when Jean Stemmet scored their fourth try.
On Saturday, DHL Western Province beat the Ford Pumas, who finished second in the North Section, by 33-20 at DHL Newlands in Cape Town.
Province flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis had another good afternoon with the boot, slotting seven from eight for a personal haul of 18 points as the Capetonians progressed to their first-ever Vodacom Cup final.
DHL WP led by 23-12 at the break and controlled the game from the outset, setting the platform upfront for the backs to show their skill.
But early in the second half, the gap closed to 23-17 as JW Jonker, captain of the Ford Pumas, capitalised on a mistake by the home team.
Hooker Sidney Tobias, left wing Ederies Arendse, both in the first half, and loose forward Nic Fenton-Wells, who is also their captain, scored DHL WP’s tries.
In the end, DHL WP’s defence, a hallmark of the rugby produced in Cape Town recently, coupled with errors by the Ford Pumas, were the main features of this game.
Note: The date and time for the Vodacom Cup final will be confirmed by the South African Rugby Union in due course and will appear on www.sarugby.co.za.

Its Vodacom finals this friday in Kimberley. Massive challenge for the WP team.

Province hoping to end trophy drought

Wed, 16 May 2012 10:42

Western Province Vodacom Cup coach John Dobson has ever seen his team lose only once in two years, and this weekend in Kimberley they have the chance to bring some senior silverware back to Newlands for the first time in eleven years.
WP have never made the final of the Vodacom Cup before (since the tournament started in 1998), so that in itself is a significant achievement, but Dobson is determined to see them cap a storming campaign with one last victory against an extremely competitive Griquas side on Friday.
"We are very chuffed to be in the final, but the real history will be winning it," he told this website.
The Western Province coach believes that their success this season can be attributed in part to the structures at the union which have churned out a steady stream of talented players over the last few years.
"I think the collective momentum of the youth structures at Western Province, last year's Vodacom Cup and the Stormers pre-season where we were one big squad has all contributed to our success," he explained.
A major challenge at the bigger unions is to forge a team from the players who did not make the Super Rugby squad into a unit that can compete in the Vodacom Cup, and Dobson believes that having the right attitude is vital.
He said: "There are two tiers to the Vodacom Cup teams, the one is the smaller unions where it is their premier team and Currie Cup team, and for the top franchises it is their second team. So for us it is about making them a happy bunch after the disappointment of not making the Stormers.
"My job is to make them realise that there is no individual path back to the Stormers, they have to produce at Vodacom Cup level so that is what I try to get across to them.
"As they have done that they have built a team that now genuinely wants to win this cup," added the Western Province coach.
By harnessing the hunger that these fringe Super Rugby players have to make the step up Dobson has managed to create a winning environment, despite the disruptions of losing players to either the Stormers squad or injury, but he was quick to pay tribute to the determination and focus of the players themselves and the support of the union as crucial factors to his success.
He said: "What you have got to remember is that half our players are not contracted. It is tough but these guys are absolutely amazing as amateurs because they train, behave and work like professionals but all they get are their match fees.
"I know it is the most junior of the senior trophies of course but the union has been incredibly supportive, we have been hit by injuries this week and they said 'Don't worry we will fly in extra players for you so that you can give a guy until the last minute to prove his fitness'," added Dobson.
With injury concerns over five of his key players this weekend there are a few more sleepless nights in store, but it is not a strange situation for the Vodacom Cup coach who has lost a steady stream of players as the Stormers injury list has lengthened this season.
"It was quite difficult when the Stormers were on tour and we had to bring in quite a few new players, and now we have got quite a few significant injury worries for this final but hopefully that will stand us in good stead because the guys we will be going back to now have played and trained with us," he said.
However, although winning the Vodacom Cup is a major goal and the focus at this stage, Dobson explained that he sees his main role as grooming players to make the step up to Super Rugby level.
"I think my main job is to produce players for the Stormers and the Western Province Currie Cup side. We obviously want to win the Vodacom Cup but our core job, and probably what we are judged on by the outside world, is to bring players through," he said.
The Western Province coach has lost flank Don Armand to the Stormers squad this week thanks to Nizaam Carr's knee injury (Carr having also initially been part of Dobson's squad), but his selection headaches do not end there as five of his frontline players are currently doubtful to start against Griquas due to injury.
Dobson revealed: "There are question marks over the availability of Quinn Roux, JP du Plessis, Michael van der Spuy, Demetri Catrakilis and Rohan Kitshoff.
"That has put us under pressure because we fly early on Thursday morning, but we should be ok because we have got enough depth. Out of those five I think about three will make it the other two we will have to see in Kimberley."
One positive is that he has retained his captain Nick Fenton-Wells who was in line to provide loose forward cover for the Stormers but will, instead, be able to line up at No.8 in Kimberley this weekend.
"With the potential disruption through injury, to have lost your captain would have been even tougher to smooth over the bumps, and to have him is a massive boost at a crucial time," said Dobson.
With their leader in place, Western Province are determined to give Griquas a full go on Friday, and Dobson explained that although they are playing away from home he is stressing the positives to his team.
"We actually like a hard, fast surface for our style of rugby, so from that point of view we are quite excited about it.
"We don't mind traveling because we travel quite well and what I think is good for us is although we have some sore bodies the Pumas are one of the most physical teams around, so the fact that we could front up to them last week means that there shouldn't be too many demons around the Griquas physically," he said.

Western Province claimed their first Vodacom Cup title when they snatched a 20-18 victory (half-time 10-13) over Griquas in the final, at GWK Park, on Friday.

Griquas, dominated the possession and territory stakes throughout the match, led 18-13 with time up on the stadium clock. But, waves of late Western Province assaults eventually saw their defences cave as flank Rohan Kitshoff went over for the try which levelled the score at 18-18.
Province Flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis calmly slotted the conversion to break Griquas hearts on the stroke of fulltime.
For Western Province it was their first win in 15 years of the competition in their first-ever final, while Griquas were left ruing the fact that they missed out on their fifth title.
Western Province never held the lead in the match until after the final whistle but were rewarded for their persistence.
Griquas got off to a flyer and, after forcing Western Province into some early handling errors, opened the scoring as early as the second minute, when their powerfully-built number eight Leon Karemaker burst through a lineout to score midway out. Flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff had no trouble with the conversion.
Boshoff increased the lead to 10-0 with a penalty 14 minutes later.
The visitors hit straight back in the 19th minute as their backline employed slick hands to see right wing Danie Poolman over the tryline.
Catrakilis duly slotted the conversion.
Both sides played attacking rugby and probed each other’s defences. The game threatened to open up at times in the first half but both teams were unable to finish off.
The flyhalves kicked a penalty each shortly before the before the break to see Griquas leading 13-10 at the changeover.
Catrakilis levelled matters shortly after the restart with a well-taken penalty.
The hosts moved back into the lead in the 48th minute when prop Janro van Niekerk crashed over after sustained pressure on the Western Province line.
Missed penalty attempts by Boshoff (3) and replacement fullback Rudi Vogt (2) cost Griquas dearly on the night, as Kitshoff went on to snatch a victory for Western Province which had looked unlikely for most of the evening.
Scorers:
Griquas: Tries: Leon Karemaker, Janro van Niekerk; Conversions: Marnitz Boshoff; Penalties: Marnitz Boshoff (2).
Western Province: Tries: Danie Poolman, Rohan Kitshoff; Conversions: Demetri Catrakilis (2); Penalties: Demetri Catrakilis (2).
