The Wallabies Thread

being a starter doesnt make Fitzpatrick good or make him future wallaby material IMO, i think rangi had a bad game yes but offers more, however for a development camp perspective as what was originally posted? I'd go for the younger players

. Also I think we have ALOT of players who are capped, but not really wallabies wihich makes it tough. Like ...Enever., Nabuli...Godwin.....cmon.. Backrow stocks are good but the non capped players are rated very differenly by different people depending on which team you support and what style you like.

Toua is starting and in better form, but do you think the RA high performance team would invite him OVER Banks to a uncapped development camp?

I think it would be better geared towards a 'future' wallaby hopeful camp. targeting those we don't know much about but are in Super Rugby and can be driven along in their development to be quality starters post 2019 and potentially in Wallaby pictures.

I kinda just meant it as an amusing mental exercise because i've been at work for 30 minutes and i'm already bored as fuck.

Taqele certainly brings something no one else in Australia can. I wouldn't hate seeing him on a Wallabies bench. Would be fairly controversial though, particularly since we are flush with wingers at the moment.

Doesn't make it that tough since none of the players should be anywhere near the Wallabies.

If rugby was like NFL, Taqele would be a 100 test Wallaby. You run him on for set plays in the opposition 22, and then take him off after we score/lose the ball.

I've genuinely never seen a player like him. An almost impossible combination of big and fast, but completely inept at most other facets of the game.

I wouldn't hate it if we had him in the #23 shirt for the Wallabies, but you'd hate for him to have to come on anytime before the 60 minute mark.

Has there even been any bench specialist picked in a provincial side on the bench and picked in the national side on the bench, like some are suggesting Taqele could be? In my experience, bench specialists usually play Subbies.

1. Saaga 2. Rangi 3. Ainsley
4. RHP 5. Arnold
6. Valetini 8. TImu 7. Wright
9. Ruru 10. Lance 11. Peni 12. Meakes 13. English 14. Maddocks 15. Banks
16. Amosa 17. Smith 18. Talakai 19. Staniforth 20. Mccaffrey/Holloway/Fainga'a 21. Gordon 22. Mason/DP 23. Newsome/Perese

Pretty close, although id have Perese over Peni, Maddocks to 15 and Banks the wing, Gordon to 9 as much as i dont mind Ruru Gordon is just a better player.

can't believe they are capped - far too many single figure capped players in australia

Australia has 27 capped players since the RWC and 18 of them haven't played 10 tests yet.

New Zealand has 24 capped players since the RWC and 16 of them haven't played 10 tests yet.

South Africa has 21 capped players since the RWC and 12 of them haven't played 10 tests yet.

We're not really a substantial outlier here.

Ireland have capped 33 players since the RWC!

yeh wow oky doke

Guess then I'd look at a key word and say 'yet to play more then 10', as opposed to 'won't'play more then 10'. Cheika in particular seems to like giving test chances to people as a trial to see how they would go in that environment. Rather then saying that person has absolutely, undeniably and regularly stood up and said "I deserve it". Obviously being a romantic but Nabuli and Enever lately in particular grind my gears.

I don't often defend any of Cheika's selections, but in the circumstances at the time, who else other than Enever was still standing in the second row stakes?

I think Carter or Douglas would have made more sense then Enever and definitely would not have offered less. Even capping Arnold #2 looked a better move. (not sure of injury statuses at that time tbh)

So your position is to recall an experienced player who you have moved on from because you don't think they are up to it any more just to avoid debuting a different player?

That isn't a better option at all in my opinion.

Of the 18 who haven't played 10 tests yet there are a bunch who almost certainly will: Dempsey, Rodda, Tui, Tupou, Naivalu, Korobeite, Uelese, and others.

We play around 15 tests a year. The reality of modern test rugby is that a lot of players will be used both because you have to and also because exposing more players to that environment improves your depth.

Ok, but guys like Nabuli should never have been capped, his form didn’t warrant it at the time and certainly doesn’t now

I'm not sure why Enever should grind your gears?

He's an excellent lineout lock who is unlucky not to have a regular starting position in a Super Rugby team (especially in recent years with 5 teams - probably would get a start at the Tahs), and has been quite good for the Brumbies in recent years and was in great form in the NRC leading to the EOYT............

He was rewarded for that form, and managed a to get a couple of games on the tour - I can completely understand why he would be selected over Carter or Douglas, with the former given opportunities and unlikely to really step up to that next level, and the latter in terrible form and seemingly past his best......... and then factor in injuries to a number of our locks on that tour.

Nabuli on the other hand...........

Is Enever better then Carter?

I liked Carter - but he couldn’t make the step up to be a quality test player.

Enever has time on his side. With all other options available (and in form) I would have him no higher than 6th or 7th on the pecking order, but that wasn’t the case when he was picked.
