No disrespect to St Pat's, but alas I think it's as much a case of how far backwards Ashgrove, Iona, and especially SLC have gone.
Do Ashgrove still trial against Nudgee on Anzac Day? That use to be a close run affair.

Padua beat Iona 12-5, in a slow, sloppy game that saw Padua defend their own line for the first 20 minutes with only one try scored in that time.

Against an awful SLC. Compare to the Ashgrove teams from before, say, 2003.

Popped out for a look and yes SLC were below Par but AShgrove looked very sharp. The Ashgrove back row were Top class and the front row great as well. 10 , 12 ,15 tips in the backs. SLC had a few hard workers up front but they just couldn’t find the answers.

Fair assessment Tiger but the first comp game will be a much tougher outing for MCA. Truth is they probably didn’t show their full hand today.

Tough day at the ‘Corn for the Black and Gold . Am told that they are missing half a dozen or so significant players , however , depth is the main issue

Question for the Maristinians ........

How many , and which players , do you expect will make the AIC Team ?

Absolutely embarrassing from Lauries yesterday - injuries or not that's part of rugby, you are only as good as the blokes in your 2nds/16s. All those 16s who dropped off in pre season because of the treatment from the coach I'm sure would have enabled a closer contest. There were some blokes who tried their guts out yesterday but they lack direction and are attempting some fancy game plan that the cattle they have isn't capable of, no defensive organisation either. Credit to ashgrove they were ruthless and very impressive across the park, their leaguies very good for them in the backs.

Again let's go back to their preparation - playing one game in Sydney against a 3rds and playing Pats who rested a number of their topliners against them.

It's not rock bottom yet...but next week against St Peter's will be if they can't perform better. If this rabble continues, expect some braveheart like scenes from the old boys to the headmaster - no SLC old boy can stomach losing to ashgrove, although a trial, 88-0 is a new record high loss for us in TAS/AIC history. This new coaching staff are really giving the old coaching staff a run for their money.

As an old boy of SLC and a current parent of a boy attending the school - I can't believe yesterday's result. Asked my son if he wanted to stay for the Firsts and he said no-way - there's your problem right there. It's going to take awhile to fix - assuming it starts now (it won't).

I have no doubt that Ashgrove are well placed to win the premiership. I just don't think flogging a dreadful SLC is any real indication of quality. I know this will stir up the old hoary chestnut of scholarships, but a better indication of quality would be against a GPS squad, or at least a CAS squad from Sydney.

It was embarrassing to watch that yesterday. Ash are better than last year and i think only Pats have a chance of getting close to them. Haven't heard much how Pats are travelling but. In terms of Lauries... how long are some of these injured players out for? Hopefully they and the coaching staff can turn things around quickly because there are a lot of angry and upset supporters and Old Boys after yesterday.

Dave, I believe you're based in Sydney nowadays so it seems you're a bit out of touch with the schoolboy game up here.

For reasons which belong on another thread, Ashgrove v any GPS First XV in the present era is not a fair fight, but at the moment they might be reasonably competitive with say the bottom 2 GPS teams.

In the last 4 years Ashgrove have beaten Knox, Waverley, Barker and smashed Cranbrook last year, despite the age disadvantage, so things aren't as grim as you appear to think.

Any word on the MCA back who injured his wrist or thumb in the trial. From all accounts he was one of the bigger names in the team?
Also any predictions for 2018 round 1.
Yet to hear anything abt SPLC.
