Good to see Kinross having fixtures against GPS Schools, despite the lopsided score, exposure to the playing strengths of GPS schools will push the Kinross Rugby standard to a higher level. Last year they played Newington in a full Saturday fixture. Again, although well Beaten (NC38 beat KWS7) Kinross was competitive. Kinross is one school where rugby is growing, is the preferred school for enrolments in the central west (Apologies to Stannies) and at time of declining rugby numbers, is growing against this trend.
Hence, the lesson is that Country Independent School Schools, should be selectively targeted as a source for increased Rugby Numbers. Unfortunately, I suspect the National Body is neither interested nor able to promote the game in these schools. An investment in schools such as Central Coast Grammar, Newcastle Grammar, Hunter Valley Grammar, The Illawarra Grammar School and other Rugby Playing Country Schools, could offset the decline in their Urban based counter parts.

Hi Mike.

How's the Kings side looking this year? Who is back from last year's 1sts? Minogue. Connolly. Anyone else?

Big game this weekend - trial against Barker. Should tell us alot about potential front runners for GPS and CAS.

Shore 2nds won 66-0 against Daramalan and Shore 1sts lost 55-10. Apparently Daramalan “import” very heavily but that’s for another thread.
As I understand the Daramarlan situation:

Daramarlan play in a combined school/club competition, with 4 schools and 4 clubs making up the comp.
Dara's starting 1st XV is made up of approx 10 schoolboys and 5 non-Dara boys from Canberra, Cooma and Jindabyne.
I think one of the locals is an Australian schoolboy representative.
The Dara 2nds are all schoolboys.

Happy to have my facts checked.

Daramalan are just tough to play. No doubt the crowd would have been into the Shore boys, the dara boys don’t take a backwards step and play tough footy.

Shore are probably a bit upset that that’s two losses from two as well, despite the new expenditure on coaching infrastructure.

There aren’t many schools that go to Dara and beat them- that’s for sure.

The same can be said of Eddies and Marist. Considering the ACT won the National championships last year, these schools really punch above their weight.

Can someone link me to the Fixtures (specifically for August 11)? Could not seem to find anything reliable in my search online.

Before the trials kick off in earnest this Saturday, I thought I would have a crack at a possible GPS XV, based purely on recent representative honours. I acknowledge this is not a reliable basis for predicting selections and that many more players will push for selection as the season unfolds. But it's a start and barring injuries there are a few 'no brainers'. Will be interesting to come back and check how close it actually is. So here goes...

1. Angus Bell - New - Australian Schools 2017
2. Julian Heaven - Joeys - GPS Blue 2017
3. Nick Jones - Joeys - Australian u16s 'Merit Team' 2017
4. Jeremy Williams - Scots - NSW Schools 1 2017
5. Hugh Bokenham - Joeys - GPS President A XV 2017
6. Joe Brial - Scots - Australian u16s 'Merit Team' 2017
7. Brett Wellington - Scots - NSW Schools 2 2017
8. Will Harris - Scots - NSW Schools 2 2017
9. Lachlan Albert - View - Australian u16s 'Merit Team' 2017
10. Charlie Savala - Scots - NSW Schools 2 2017
11. Tolu Koula - New - Australian u18s Sevens 2018
12. Dom Easy - View - NSW Schools 2 2017
13. Angus Bell - View - NSW Schools 2 2017
14. Jordan Williams - Kings - Australian u18s Sevens 2018
15. Johnny Connolly - Kings - Australian u18s Sevens 2018

Others (all inside backs)

Matt Minogue - Kings - NSW Schools 2 2017
Saul Lewis - New - Australian u18s Sevens 2018
Jude Gibbs - Joeys - NSW u16s 2017

18 players - Scots 5, Joeys 4, New 3, Kings 3, View 3 and Shore 0

Rich_E thanks for kicking off the debate. Not a bad base baseline.

Geez Scots must have an impressive back row or 4,5,6,7,8 thinking about who is returning.

Would be keen to see team lists posted for GPS firsts teams for this weekend. Photos of programmes will do!

Reckon Joeys would be rope able about Auggies withdrawing their firsts team for this weekend. Especially after ISA wanted an invite to the GPS/CAS Party.....

These external trials are a precious opportunity to stake your claim for a Firsts Jersey and higher honours. Importantly. for the year 12 boys, there were only ever 12 matches to represent your school. For the Joeys Firsts that is now 11. Pretty poor show by Auggies in both planning and execution.

Yes armchair ... absolute shocker ... to see arguably the most competitive Joeys outfit in a number of years,
not getting a game this weekend

Auggies should give themselves an upper cut

Riche.... like that team ... tell you what the battle for 10 is a good one... altgh do agree with a fully fit Savala ... however that is probably my Waverley bias ... remembering that he was in the junior school

They should be strong in that area, although I think the Scots forwards I included in the GPS team might line up in slightly different positions for their 1sts. Something like:

4. Williams - NSW 1
5. Brial - Aust u16s No. 8
6. Wellington - NSW 2
7. Robson - Scots 1sts
8. Harris - NSW 2

Is the Brial lad related to Michael Brial of the Tahs a decade or two ago?

what is the John Dory with that?

From the ISA thread, I believe Auggies double booked in going to Japan for the Sanix World Youth Tournament.

Pretty embarrassing effort from St Augustines deciding to go to Japan presumably after the draw then unless there is some explanation for the poor communication. The supposed benefits of the one round comps and trials for schoolboy selections must surely be seen as a joke. Does anyone know how this occurred and whether Joeys have secured another trial of some sort in the top 2 grades? As I said, disappointing as it would have been a good guide as to where both are at this year albeit relatively early in the season.

From what I have heard, Joeys were not informed in time to make any alternate arrangements. Really no excuse from Auggies for this one.

It appears that all other Auggies A teams will be at Hunters Hill except Firsts and Seconds. Auggies 3rds playing Joeys 10ths.

Joeys Firsts training then cheering on the Seconds who will play St Gregs Firsts at 3 pm. No doubt an exciting opportunity for the Joeys Seconds and Greg's firsts to be the Marquee game on #1 field in front of a full home crowd. Compulsory student attendance.

Poor form Auggies and a wasted opportunity for your senior teams. I doubt that invite will be extended again.

Does anyone have any idea of the form of Scots 15A's this year?

The Stannies lads are no doubt in for a big challenge.
