I think it’s best to say that Angus Bell played better in the 2nd half being instrumental in three tries. The forwards were comprehensively beaten all day in every aspect making it impossible for the backs to contribute. A squad with such promise at the beginning of the year appears to have lost direction and team unity. Until Riverview get a strong coaching staff in that isn’t influenced by a powerful parental body they will not succeed at GPS level.

Yeah. Would have been big concerns amongst View coaches and supporters when Scots won a tight head from first scrum in match and from there on Scots 1 - 8 clinically dismantled the opposition. I expected a lot more from Views star studded backline but even they found it tough goings given Scots forward dominance. Wellington and Williams had very strong games. Scots backs went well too. Nothing fancy. Just kept the ball alive until the holes eventuated. I thought Mason, fill in for Savala at 10, controlled things well and Mossman (15) was on fire, particularly in first half.

I think prop Wingrove had a great game as well Rich.
Some sensational runs in the first half.
The unsung heroes of the front row continue to perform each week.
Strong in the set piece and consistently more mobile than their counterparts.

With Joeys scraping home against New it's very much as predicted.
Only 3 schools still in the hunt.
Kings and Scots looking the ones to beat with their meeting scheduled for the final round.
Riverview versus Newington next week should be an interesting match up.
Based on last Saturday and with home advantage, Newington would be my favourites for that one.
Early predictions.
Scots by 60.
Kings by 25
New by 10

Shore is a huge rugby school and essential to the continued health of GPS rugby. However it's recent record in 1sts must draw into question the educational benefits of staying in the competition. High and Grammar withdrew for exactly the same reason.
If the Shore Headmaster continues to refuse (or at best minimise) sporting scholarships, then all the best training regimes in the world will not lift their results because the "cattle" are not available. Despite a lot of effort by the school in upgrading their training programs, the 1sts are still losing.

I'd suggest that Shore 1sts play all other GPS 2nds from next year onwards.

The current HM is on the verge of retirement so it will be interesting to see the next HM's stance on Shore Rugby. Moving down a comp will be hard to stomach for Old Boys, they've been very vocal on the issues surrounding the rugby programme.

Nick did play well too, Wristy. They all did. They play a very distinct brand of footy, executed consistently. I am, though, concerned about round 4 (Joeys) and 5 (Kings). Two massive games. Either side could knock off Scots imo.

Kings are a very good side. Probably the next best pack after Scots and incredibly dangerous in the backs. Connolly especially can tear a team to shreds.

I'm sure there are many reasons for Shore having a dismal win/loss ratio in the 1sts over the last several years. Many of those reasons have been debated extensively on the Thread That Shall Not Be Mentioned.

Can you imagine what it was like for the boys when they played two rounds of GPS comp without a win?
At least one round enables more equitable match-ups during the trials.
Sustained losing seasons at 1st XV level does the players no good, isn't good for the school as a whole, and gives the other GPS schools a lop sided game whenever they play Shore.

I'd suggest that Shore 1sts play all other GPS 2nds from next year onwards.

Yes, maybe. Recruiting is an issue but not the entire story. Maybe 3 years ago, shore had 3 reps in nsw 1, the same number or more than other schools but they still got beaten every game due to 0 depth. I don’t think recruiting 3-4 players would fix the problem. The Joeys D and E teams often play the C and D teams at other schools so I can’t see why that can’t happen with the Shore firsts. The gps comp is/would become a farse with only 5 teams. Maybe the ‘powers to be’ need to think of ways to even it up. BTW, I think View are facing similiar issues but the results haven’t got as bad, ......yet.

Agree with regard to Kings Rich, but we play Joeys at home.
We have won 12 GPS games in a row against them.
They haven't beaten us since 2009 and this years team is one of the best in recent memory.
I have a little more confidence than yourself.
Kings will be tough.
We beat them at Bellevue Hill in the trial but the GPS decider is away.
It should be a cracker.

With the number of reps that Scots has, it would be a huge upset for Kings to beat them. Did Scots have 8 of the 15 players in NSW 1 or nsw 2? If so, that’s insanely good.

Wrong, Shore were competive in 2016. And did defeat Riverview in Rd 2.

Could of/should have won more.

It was a particularly good School Rugby 1st XV. Playing in a distorted competition.

Led at half time in nearly all their games that year. Lost at the death to Scots twice, Newington once, and went down to Kings by only 8 or so in round one. Plagued by injury more than anything, Rixon played only a couple of matches.

And we're coming back at Joeys in Rd 1, only to have the game cut short by injury.

Sounds like Shore have at least 1 or maybe 2 years in the wilderness, then we might see some more competitive age cohorts come through.

Thanks for this and the other scores, Joker. Really appreciated. :) I did get out there for some of the games watching the 15As, seconds and firsts.

Hope your enjoyed soem Hunters Hill hospitality. Joeys always enjoy hosting their northern cousins. The TAS 1st Xv is coached by a former SJC PE teacher. In fact, there are five former SJC staff now at TAS so it was a reunion!

Credit to shore. Hope they come back in a season or two. If they dropped back to 2nds or 3rds it would be a huge loss for gps rugby.

Not an option IMO.

What they are doing, playing 1 comp round and lots of different schools in the trial season, some of which will be better matched to Shore.

This is much better for all.

Couple this with the added coaching resources, in time Shore will improve.

Wishful thinking honey badger. As a Shore parent I could post copies of the opens rugby results from the torch bearers publications for the last seven years (and the problems probably started before then) and it reveals a systemic problem, even in the year that Rixon played at fullback. Shore rugby has been blindly waiting for the tide to turn for too long.

I fear I let you down Joker. I limited myself to a cup of coffee and a very simple (and cheap) sausage role. Good to see that we are importing talent.

Rixon played 3 full games that season and they were leading at some point in nearly every game they played, the problem for the 2016 team was they were a team with no experience closing out games and had some of their best players injured at crucial points in the season. 2014 was the same sort of year for Shore beating Riverview, Kings, drawing with Joeys and losing at the death to Riverview and Scots away and in 2012 they won four in a row and were legitimate title contenders.

Prior to 2016 they had basically no S&C programme that covered the age groups below the opens so players were getting to the opens severely under strengthened and under sized compared to other schools and they didn’t even have a proper offseason training programme. Problems with coaching and S&C don’t disappear in the same year you make a radical overhaul.
