Clubs could be owned by companies, individuals, national unions or current management and will not be tied to a salary cap for their 30-man squads.

Interesting, but not sure how that will work out. Although I think the league here will borrow from aspects of Japan's Top League.

And the team locations are independent of where the marquee players are from. It doesn't need a team in Samoa (or Western Sydney or wherever) when you can recruit from there.

But by all means, if those places stack up as somewhere to base a side then great.

Plenty of different ownership possibilities - including a reboot of the model owned by the fans - to choose from.

Seems like WSR 2019 is starting to take shape...

Clubs could be owned by companies, individuals, national unions or current management and will not be tied to a salary cap for their 30-man squads.

Twelve parties have already expressed interest about securing an initial five-year licence and at least two more teams may be added within five years.

The competition would be played between March and June next year over a 14-week home-and-away season.
The top four sides would then go into a three-week sudden-death finals series.

Discussions are also being held with broadcasters throughout the regions where games will be played.
A WSR spokesman said the 2019 competition “remains a work in progress” but announcements could begin within the next few weeks.

I wonder aloud if any poster on this forum has ever suggested a private ownership model.

Kinda silly for Twiggy to follow the most successful sporting model in the world.

But will never work in Australia. WE need guarantees it will work before we can try. Also no one will buy into a rugby competition.

But just maybe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That line is there to include the two Japanese teams. Which as we all know are corporate teams.

The failures are pretty well known: Mitchell Rebels, Waratahs, Cox Rebels, NRC stars, NRC rams, NRC Rising. The failures outweigh the successes which appear to be the Force, and three NRC teams which I think are still privately funded (Rays, Eagles, Vikings).

Not saying it can’t work, just history inAustralia says it is tested and results are questionable.

Forest can make it work for as long as he wants to. Less, but not insignificantly wealthy men like Mitchell have said it isn’t worth it. For a sport of the elite, we have a bad track record of providing private benefactors in this country.

You used failed Rugby teams, who where operating under the leadership of an inept board, in a competition hidden on subscription TV, and the competition controlled by an in-would looking, self serving board relying on SA staying in the league.

Why not look at where its worked,in Australia. There are many examples.

Well said Half if you don't have the right infrastructure in place - does not matter what ownership structure you will have as teams will struggle.

You need to change the basic framework, broader supporting infrastructure and competition model to have right conditions for private ownership to work. That is what twiggy trying to do re: seek FTA support, create a more appealing entertainment based product accessible to fans etc etc....

Interestingly including Japanese teams in Top League competition and Twiggy ball being a 14 week competition that Forrest appears to be going down the route that teams in WSR will look to be involved in other competitions. For me I see this could be the link to make NRC more important for WSR sides like Force and Fiji etc and actually makes a lot of sense. Re: latter where you get your more domestic content.

Surprised not more comments on here about that....as for me I possibly see how getting a mix of champions league and more domestic team competition by Force and other Asia Pacific sides closer to home with domestic appearl (read Fiji and possibly NZ etc) involved in NRC.

Actually to me makes a lot of sense if this is the thinking behind it. Would be good if Twiggy also made some investment in NRC if this is the thinking as lets face it would not take much investment to improve it in terms of marketing etc given bugger all spent on it. This of course assumes NRC important vehicle for Force and WA Rugby and helps support WSR.

Why would Twiggy give handouts to the ARU when they merely "piss it up against the wall" :D
Offer a few crumbs for nrc for purely self interest as Force participates in nrc and way it looks with 14 week wsr comp will continue to be important pathway for them.

I don't think he needs to. RA has no good will whatsoever at this point and cutting Force from NRC would surely be a step to far even for them.

If RA want his cash they are going to have to explain how they fold Force and WA interests into the National game.

Question?

Will the Force play its full strength side in the NRC, or do they play their emerging players like the other Super teams?

If the Force are playing full strength, then really they should win it easy.

As the rest of the teams will be fringe and unsigned players.

The Force being a fully professional outfit.

Player payments for the rest of the NRC, I believe something like $1700 in total.

Think you are selling the NRC teams a bit short there. Consider a possible Queensland Country team (thanks Reg!)

14 Izaia Perese
13 Chris Feauai-Sautia
12 Duncan Paia’aua
11 Jordan Petaia
10 Hamish Stewart
9 Tate McDermott
8 Tainui Ford
7 Liam Wright
6 Angus Scott-Young
5 Harry Hockings
4 Angus Blyth
3 Harry Hoopert
2 Alex Casey
1 James Slipper

16 Efi Ma’afu
17 Richie Asiata
18 Kirwan Sanday
19 Rob Puli’uvea
20 Sunia Finefeuiaki
21 James Tuttle
22 Teti Tela
23 Patrick James

How many of those are Reguar Reds players or have been capped with the Reds?

I thought it was a development comp a tier below Super, the reason given why Quade would not be starting.

For the same reason, can't see Slipper any chance of playing

The idea is that it does involve any Super Rugby players that aren't playing for the Wallabies.

Slipper should play and so should Hunt. The Reds want to put their skills on display in the hope that someone else employs them for next season assuming they don't want to keep them.

Cooper should play also if the coach thinks he is his best option.

It's precisely the reason why they will be playing, and have been selected for their respective squads.........
