Whos keen for the 6th Grade Competition this year its being played on Friday Night
So in other words its Friday Night Lights this year.
Mate i would think that most of the boys would prefer Saturday. Many clubs also have juniors training on a Friday so venues might be an issue.

That is a shame the Wests Normanby cup boys will be gutted they were the only ones who trained for it. I think some boys who cannot make any mid week training due to work will find it difficult to play. Also Riverside will have no one to play.

Anyone heard much about this Brisbane 7s on this weekend at Ballymore? Is there any chance of it being a success?

Not a thing - I was starting to wonder if it was still on. In the initial pr release, there was a fair amount of prize money mentioned too so I imagine the clubs are hoping it's a success.

I have heard that a couple of clubs have pulled out which if true would be pretty poor as it could have been a great start to the season of the back of the Premier sevens.

It should be a great weekend in any case.

Only stuff I've seen if from the YP Threads boys.

Gday forum friends, thought I'd make an account to contribute to conversations in 2019 instead of being a silent reader.

Which clubs have pulled out of the Brisbane sevens? I do find it odd that promotions seem to have died down in the lead up after seeing quite a bit early on, maybe they've had funding cut?

welcome mate. Any ideas who was funding it anyway? I assume privately through sponsorship (ie no QRU).

I was skeptical of this from the start. The fact it was at Ballymore (too big a crowd from the start - perhaps should have started at a club venue and built from there) and the focus on it just being a party (no mention of the rugby itself). The fact it is the same weekend as the Sydney 7s is a little questionable too. I've seen nothing of who is playing etc.

Agree Reg. When I saw the YP involvement I assumed they would try and launch something like this at Wests first, seeing as those boys already have connections to the club. Wests also has a good setup to hold a small-medium sized sports event with the new facilities.

QRU doesn't seem to be involved at all, nothing on their website, strange for an event being hosted at Ballymore that they wouldn't try and promote it in some way shape or form. Maybe they aren't supportive of it and could have communicated as much to the clubs? Hence why some pulling out due to insurance issues or something. Not sure.

I have seen the QRU share some social media on it. I'd assume they are getting fees (including a cut of the food and drink) from it. So it's in their interests for it to be popular.

I suppose it’s the answer to the axing of the Global 10’s - intended to drum up a bit of hype heading into the season for QPR.
Obviously hasn’t been that successful (maybe because the majority of players would rather conserve energy heading into trials? And the athletes that are wonderful at 7’s level aren’t always great at 15’s)
Not of the same caliber as Global 10’s, but some rugby is better than no rugby, especially if it’s hosted at Ballymore.

This comp may be a good test for how Ballymore handles what could be a decent sized crowd. Its more of a talking point in the Reds thread but the facilities there really aren't up to scratch, including public transport to and from the venue etc.

If this comp is being funded and run relatively independently of the QRU it will be interesting to see how many, if any, outside vendors are used e.g. food trucks, pop up beer stalls or whether they will try their current model which seems to always let people down (slow service, not enough cashiers, running out of beer etc.)

Has anyone got any news on how the clubs have gone in the off season recruiting players?
By the looks of it Souths have been the big winner from the Sunnybank exodus. Would be great to see a list of gains and losses for 2019.

I think Souths might have picked up a few other high profile recruits, if what I’m hearing is correct. Last year’s exposure really promoted them as a top club. I would have liked to see them feature in the Grand Final however. They certainly had the potential and ability to.

Followed Souths quite closely last year as I moved close to their playing fields. My observations were they built a great team and structure with Quade as a focal point early in the season, he got injured, the players around him who had plenty of ability had learned to be too reliant on QC (Quade Cooper) and the wheels fell off a bit. Quade returns, probably not playing as well as he did for the first part of the season, maybe because clubs had become more aware of his ability to impact the game and this might sound harsh but I felt they weren't really going to challenge for the Premiership in the weeks leading up the Finals.

They should be pretty damn good this year though if they have retained those players (less QC (Quade Cooper) and KHunt) and added others.
