I think there is a connection between recruiting and there is now only 5 competitive teams in the gps comp. the same thing would happen in the nrl if there wasn’t a salary cap. I like the sound of what you say but it’s making the schools sound more righteous than they really are. schools are doing this to win rugby games and not for the good of the child. The schools like to say otherwise but I think thats it’s just a sales pitch. If these schools are offering 2-4 indigenous, academic, music scholarships and then also offer maybe 25 sports scholarships/fee reimbursements, then the school’s motive is to improve the schools image, and its not about child’s well being.
Good luck to all teams this weekend. It will be another great spectacle of U17/18 rep rugby.

Absolutely its called Brand marketing 101.

I’m also biased towards Kings. The game against Joeys this week will give everyone a better idea how they are travelling. Last years game was brutal. Re kings v Wav, Kings let in 2 soft try’s in the first half against Wave but then fought back in the 2nd half with 13 players. It looked bad for Kings then within about 15 mins of play my view of the kings team changed dramatically. You rarely see such a large reversal of momentum especially when down 1-2 players. I would be interested to others view of the game.

I was told by the people sitting next to me that 12 of the 15 Wav players are ‘Easts league juniors’. If this is true, and I know it happens to varying degrees at other schools, none of us should get too excited ‘when our team’ wins because it’s hardly a school team. I don’t know how you would police it but there should probably be a limit to this. If all these league boys are taking 1st grade spots from others and end up playing league I’m not sure it’s good for rugby union. Also heard that a very strong backrower who finished school last year from Riverview has just been signed by the Raiders.

There are a few Easts players, no where near 12 of the 15, there are 3, so whoever told you that needs to stop making uninformed, and nasty comments.I suspect Kings were losing at that time!
You rightly make the point that some/most schools have a few.
If you look carefully at the Kings team, there are also a number of superstars who have been bought in over the years, I bet that wasn't mentioned by the people sitting next to you.

I do think your Kings team are the real deal and it was a tremendous game of school boy rugby, both are strong teams, and the Stadium was fantastic in my view.

Rugby

Many of “these league boys” attended these private schools as normal full paying students in Year 7 and are entitled to compete to play 1st’s Rugby for their respective schools. The schools are loyal to its students first and foremost, not to the future of Rugby Union. In fact if Rugby Union was awake they could steal these league players while they are playing union. That’s what’s good for Rugby. How many players are signed by Rugby Union before the end of school..zero..to very few. What do you expect these kids to do.

Agree also , all of the schools recruit kids in all of the sports , shall we start with Shore in the rowing ?
As long as the birth certificate says they are under 18 , fair play.
I have no issue with recruitment or scholarships, its part of life and happens after school with Rugby etc..

Get over it and move onto the footy , its getting boring.

I can't quite tell if you are trolling, but I can 100% guarantee you there is no recruitment in Shore rowing.

From last years opens crews there was only one "new" kid who enetered the school after year 7. He rowed in a lower four and his name had been on the school waiting list from birth (like most of the other kids).

Try another conspiracy.

At least two of the ‘uncompetitive’ schools are uncompetitive because they are academically selective and the demographic that they have attracted have little interest in sport in general and rugby in particular. Those schools are uncompetitive in every sport they play and they only reason they aren’t still in the 1sts rugby but are in other sports relates to safety rather than being uncompetitive.

For the integrity of the comp, either it should be banned altogether or it should be limited.
The only qualification for being picked in any school team is being enrolled in the particular school. The idea that GPS andCAS schools shouldn’t enrol league players who want a good education is bizarre. A giant leap backwards into the amateur era of them and us.

Lol I’m actually a fan of the rowing program at Shore and my nephew rowed at the school.
However didn’t awake in the world last week there is some recruiting to a very professional program , let’s just hope the rugby program overhaul currently with some talented boys coming in will see Shore more competitive in years to come.
Retainment and recruitment are the keys to success in any business
Scots just do it better than the others !

Where are they recruiting from? I have a son in year 12 rowing its about coaching not recruiting. Case in point St Augustine’s winning the coach of the year award for their efforts in U17s. This award usually goes to coach who wins head of the river. I can guarantee that auggies aren’t recruiting either.

Nope again.

The new Rugby program has nothing to do with recruitment. They are trying to instil a better culture and attitude into the boys, along with an improved skills and conditioning program and a shared game structure. Again, I can assure you there isn’t one new kid in the GPS rugby squad this year who wasn’t in year 11, u16’s or the 15A’s last year.

Stick to facts please. If they’re recruiting then they are clearly pretty bad at it.

I don’t think that’s correct

There are a lot of boys at GPS schools now affiliated with NRL Clubs.
Union has only itself to blame.
The pathway through to Australian Schools is a minefield where talented boys with an injury at the wrong time or who simply aren't favoured by the selectors, get left behind.
Beyond the school system the NSW Waratahs Gen Blue programme is far from ideal and all but a lucky few quickly become forgotten.
The NRL Clubs provide genuine support and a clear potential pathway with a decent starting salary for the best immediately out of school.
Nothing here we don't know.
You can't stop boys exploring NRL options when Union offers so little.
Jut one of the many issue that needs attention from Rugby Australia.

The Wav team is also very good. Good luck with the CAS season. The comments came from a group of parents with sons in the firsts including a parent whose boy was recruited to kings in year 8. Yes, kings do it to some extent. Honestly, the group was complimenting Wav more than Kings and isn’t as biased as you may think. The parents are familiar with the Wav boys who play for easts and other leagues clubs because their sons play against them. They know how many boys in Wav play junior league.

Or is it just simply about keeping your options open. Playing both codes is a much better way to improve your overall value and skill set if you want to become a professional player for either code. There are skills you learn in both codes that are transferable and an advantage in the other.

Great idea.

3rd XV Comp - Round 2

Scots v Riverview @ Bellevue Hill
This should be a great contest with Scots coming off a draw to Grammar meeting Riverview after their good win over Shore.

Grammar v Kings @ Weigall
Another clash of two undefeated teams with Grammar at home again after their draw with Scots and Kings following their win over High.

High v Joeys @ Centennial Park
High lost in a relatively close contest at Kings last week, and will meet Joeys at Mackay after their strong win in Armidale.

Shore v TAS @ Northbridge
Both teams will be keen to register their first win for the season after first round losses to Riverview and Joeys.

Ok that sounds better but for them to suggest 12 of the 15 suggests they don't really know, because that number is silly.
As Wristy aptly pointed out there are boys at many schools who also play league, and 1 of the reasons is the weakness of the ARU. Some boys just aren't academic so whichever brand of footy can offer a future becomes their meal ticket.

Tips for this week:
Joeys to beat Kings by 5-10
Waverley to beat Riverview by 14 plus
Scots to beat Knox by 20
Newington to beat Barker by 5-10
Shore should notch up a win against Oakhill
