Jeez we need some certainty. It’s been an issue for years, since the shitty decision to chop the force. There is absolutely no certainty for anyone wanting to invest, players etc.

I had hope that Philip muight stick around if he's on the PONI list. Hopefully this forces a rethink, both for the Rebels sake, and the Wallabies sake.

I had Philip pegged as a future Rebels Captain. I see him natural leadership out on the field. He's built for the job.

Althought the title mentions two players, article only mentions the signing of Jeral Skelton. Assume just for Super Rugby AU. I guess we get a Skelton after all.

Any 7's experts out there who can fill us Rebel fans on our new signing?
Physically as good as it gets, big, fast and powerful also has a stack of skill. However it’s the non physical things that can be questioned. He was signed for next season, so interesting to see him arrive early.

I AM SO CONFUSED

Can someone please explain Philip?

"Lock Matt Philip is staying in Melbourne until at least 2021 after inking a new two-year deal."
https://www.rugby.com.au/news/2019/01/27/super-rugby-rebels-philip-re-signs-2021

If he is under contract and there is currently no indication that contract wouldn't be honoured by the Rebels - how is leaving? Was it not a full 2 year deal? Perhaps one of those 1+1 year option in his favour? Or is He/Pau going to pay the Rebels a substantial amount?

Also - Skelton
rugby.com.au puts him at 190cm and 85 kg, though an article he is quoted as saying he is 95kg and 7s is trying to get him to bulk to 100kg. If he plays 15's then it may need to be more.

Also said he was a 7s back but a 15's forward? So is this another player in the Wilkins/Wells/Killingworth mould? Are these guys likely to leave and they see Skelton as an openside, or does Wessels have an obsession with not very big utility forwards?

My understanding is that contracts when a comp resumes will be renegotiated and that they will be considerably lower than what was originally signed. I don't know how that could be the case but I know of other players who are looking elsewhere

Edit. I'm referring to contracts for next year and beyond

Still - that hasn't happened yet, so Philips still has a locked in valid contract running until the end of 2021 so I don't see how he could have already signed for Pau.

This can only have happened if had a 1 + 1 year contract, NOT a 2 year contract, OR he RA/Rebels have permitted him to be released OR he/Pau has paid a fee to be released

More likely he hasn't actually signed for Pau but he WILL if RA/Rebels cannot honour his contract as it stands.

Yes. That's probably correct . But the players know they will be asked to take a pay cut on their contracts, hence not honoured. Hence the Reds 3 moving on despite being contracted

EDIT. I know Hockings off contracted, meant the other 2

Yeh they moved on - BUT they were claiming they were rightfully terminating their contract because they had been illegally stood down. Then the Reds and RA agreed to terminate because they didn't want to force them to stay

Not quite as simple as just deciding you don't want to do it anymore or that you think that your contract won't be honoured. You need grounds.

Jeez. Pretty short list of players without moving on rumours.

Had always hoped to see a starting front row of Fereti, Jordan, and Pone. Possibly even with Hosea and Ha'angana in the 2nd row.
