Mr Oldschool,

I am not sure I understand your message. I understood the first part of it to mean that everyone should accept "their place" in the pecking order for the greater benefit of the Club, in that meaning taken, that Club trumps interests of the individual. But then it seems that you advocate a grass may be greener approach at "the club next door" where it may be better all around (including the competition)

Some clarity if you would good sir.

For what it is worth I am in agreement to the bigger idea of Club, Merit and Proof . Moreso when it is consistently applied. It is just that it seems that the Alf Stewarts who huff n puff year in and year out about how the cheeky tykes need to do this and need to do that, are also the same ones who either openly froth about many of these that basically have done nothing special other than have a recognizable name , or , tolerate the status quo and don't call bullshit on the splooge boosters that just keep chirping the same names around.

It is sort of the biggest issue that Rugby has got (downstream) and which it can't afford to have as it gets found out (upstream) and it has become significantly worse over the last 4 to 5 years.

Hey all love to Harry Wilson but are we that desperate for stars that there were those that proclaimed him better than Mark Loane after his 2nd or 3rd game for Queensland? It would seem the answer to that question is yes.

Also, to the guy that talked about fitness being a factor? Pfffffff. If anything it is likely less of a factor in the shortened season in that the guys that are fundamentally out of shape or imbalanced don't get found out with injuries as much as they would in a longer season.

At the end of the day no one should be giving a rats ass about anything other than trying to constantly improve and be accountable - Clubs and their management personnel as much as the players, and not waste time and energy with all the posturing but to direct that into the doing which should be the only thing that matters
In all seriousness DM I’m trying to decipher your post. Are you saying that the ‘names’ people continue to mention as potential quality players to move up the ranks should be disregarded because there is talent hiding in other players who haven’t been given a chance?
My observations of a player is determined by their performances on many levels. If I can see a player who has a particularly good skill; whether it be their fitness, strength, foot work, kicking, game management and most importantly their attitude to be better, then that’s what I focus on. Talent identification comes in many forms and if you can take a player who has a number of these basic skills and build on them for consistency and then improvement / re-engineering in their lacking skill areas, then that’s how players move up the ranks, and these are the players people continue to talk about. In coaching terms it’s about the formula or matrix. Good coaching is key, and that why clubs like Brothers and UQ do so well in both recruitment and results in the Colts program.
Your comment regarding fitness has me baffled. Rugby is a contact sport and the fitter and stronger you are reduces the likelihood of injury. Commitment to good training tells me a lot about a player. If a player has the desire to be the best he can and move up the ranks, then training is key. If you’re a player who wants to just play rugby with his mates on a Saturday and have a few beers afterwards, then the level of training won’t be such a priority and these players will continue to support our rugby community in an important way. Remember not everyone wants to be super star but I value the loyalty of these players in our clubs. They are our clubs.
Or is your post more about ‘tall poppy syndrome’? My son’s never going to be a world beater and never progress to a professional level, but he loves the game and will be happy to play in the club system for years to come. As a father I can still praise talent when I see it.

^Not sure what you are on about Dr Phil. Or is that Coach Phil ?

I understand you better when you are pimping Props who can’t scrum and 9’s that can’t pass or game manage.

Anyway, I simply wanted to understand where Oldschool was coming from as on one hand there was a “know thy place” thing and then there was a “fly and be free” suggestion if the player doesn’t like it

I just wanted to know where his view sat in these conflicting ideas

Following from one of these central ideas that gets parroted ad nauseum every year of young School Leavers knowing their place , paying their dues ( and whatever other hackneyed cliches that get thrown out there ) I was simply illustrating the inconsistency of this idea in practise.

I think it’s a great example of the superficiality that has developed in the game over time and where the spoken values / ideas don’t measure up to actions

And unless there is honest self examination as to this possibility, and not to be threatened by it , or defensive to it , then the game can’t really begin to repair itself - cuz in case you missed it , the game is in the shitter and there are some big reasons for that

Mate, I’m no Dr Phil or Coach Phil.

I think we agree on one thing; the importance of having good coaches and management in the Colts program to be able to transition the school leavers into club land, so that the players know the path and expectations.

Agree with this in concept . And not just at Colts Level obviously but right through the game at any level. Best guys I’ve seen are those that have a servant view of leadership yet manage this as facilitative in their manner. Add to their ability to apply and implement game patterns / plans in a direct , calm and ego less manner and then hold players accountable to it - with no fear or favour , then these guys end up at ( or should end up ) at the top of the tree at any level of the game.

In the main the majority of Coaches and Management at every level do a a helluva job and deserve a boatload of thanks for what they put into the game that they make possible.

Unfortunately , and like in most things , there are always a couple of peanuts at every level where it’s more about them and their own sense of greatness that fuck it up and deliver poor outcomes for many that come into contact with them

Gee...Roberts and Dean, love the pre season banter between you two!!,mates I suspect!,probably both coaches with prodigy not yet mentioned in dispatches!,like two peas in a pod, very similar.must say though, Deans simplistic illustration is a bit long winded, hate to see a detailed one !!!.

Excited to have club rugby back in action. I’m keen to see how clubs like Gps and Norths have recruited after under performing last year. I expect brothers and uni to be at the top this year but here are my tips for this weekend
Brothers vs Souths - Brothers
Gps vs Wests - Gps
Uni vs Norths - Uni
Easts vs Sunnybank - East’s
Let me know what you think

Ok the chest beating and hyperbole is now over we can start to be rational about this years games.
last week UQ beat Norths by nearly 50
GPS beat west’s 40 to 17
Easts beat Sunnybank 22 to 15
and Brothers beat Souths 13 to 12 with a penalty after full time.
So what can we expect from the season here is my Chrystal ball and this weeks predictions.
Bond to beat Sunnybank. This is based on last years results Bond have recruited strongly and had a good colts two team last year.
Easts to beat Wests Wests Defense Wes poor against GPS last week.
Souths to beat GPS they were unfortunate last week and will have too much firepower.
Brothers will put 100 on Norths if they are not careful.
my top four for the year in no particular order. Brothers, Souths, UQ and Bond.
Finals will be a lottery as clubs may play a lot of grades players in finals if they don’t make it.

Got 4 for 4 last week. If only you could bet on colts rugby.
This week I have:
Bond vs Sunnybank - Bond should have a classy team with sunnybank losing some players
Brothers vs Norths - Brothers 50+
Gps vs Souths- I have Gps as bit of a dark horse this year. They seemed to click last week against west’s and their confidence will he high.
Easts vs Wests - Easts by 12+

I got 4 last week so pretty good this week will be harder
Bond v Norths easy win for Bond
game of the round UQ v Easts potentially a top four match up. For mine UQ in t tight one I would probably go the other way if it were at Easts
GPS v Brothers will be another reminder for GPS of where they are at this year a decent win for Brothers
Souths v Sunnybank should be a comfortable win for Souths if they take care of the big Sunnybank Pack.

Brothers probably got out of gaol in this game and GPS will reflect that it was one that got away. Certainly the better team won in the end but a great even contest for 75-80% of the game that will give GPS, after 3 games, plenty of confidence they can compete with anyone.

Round four gents

Start with game of the round brothers v Bond the short season could play to Bonds advantage but for mine I the Brothers will be too good at home they would not want to play like last week.
sunnybank v UQ this won’t be close UQ will be too fit and organised for a talented but disorganised sunnybank team.
Easts v GPS GPS first away game against an improving Easts both teams usually bring the opposition down to their level so it could be a grind of a game. I tip Easts but would probably go the other way if it were at Ashgrove.
Norths v Wests. Should be an easy win for Wests. But a struggling Norths have had a tough start to the season so it could be close.

Interesting round this week gents with two of the games being super important.
my fearless predictions
Bond v Easts for me this game could be the fourth place decider. My pick is Bond in a close one I think Bond will bounce back after a close loss against Brothers last week.
Wests v Brothers should be a win for Brothers but they did drop the corresponding fixture last year.
UQ v Souths. This is an important game for both teams in the context of the season. Realistically the top three is betweeen Brothers and these two. I am predicting a close victory for Souths as I think there defence is a little more mature.
GPS v Sunnybank GPS at home after a sobering couple of weeks. I think GPS will Beto structured for the bank.
any contrary views.

This weekend will see some good match-ups in the Colts comp.
Wests V Sunnybank- I think Wests will win this but will need to watch Sunnybank's outside backs as they will jump on any scoring opportunities and have pace out wide. Wests by 10
Easts V Norths- Easts will get over the top of North's- Easts by 15
GPS V Uni- GPS have some injury concerns and may not match up across the field with the UNI team- UNI by 15
Souths V Bond- Tough game to pick, Souths are at home so may have the edge- Souths by 7

I think your predictions will be close. I think I’ll get to the Uni game with the Brothers bye.
