AIC Rugby 2021

Final round today, good luck to all the boys.

Can Eddies pull of the upset of the century?

Congratulations to SLC on their first outright premiership since 2008. Also Congratulations to Padua winning the 10A, 9A and 8A premierships, it looks like the brown and gold will be producing very good first xv sides for the next few years. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that Marist did not win an A's premiership this year which is probably a first in their history?

Great effort by Padua to win those lower age premierships, and it certainly does augur well for their First XV prospects over the next few years

However, looking at the results of the Padua v MCA games in the 8A's, 9A's and 10 A's played at Padua no winning margin in those games was greater than 5 points, and of course Padua had the home ground advantage on the day.

History shows that premierships below Year 10 and even Year 10 premierships themselves, aren't a great guide to First XV success, plus MCA usually get a significant influx of talent in Year 11.

So, I'd be fairly confident that MCA will be very competitive against Padua over the next few years at First XV level despite Padua getting the better of them in the lower grades this year, but it should be a rivalry worth watching.

MCA will always be competitive but it is interesting to see how their dominance has dropped off since probably 2010 onwards. Padua have come a very long way and it is great to see. I wonder if MCA still won the aggregate this year?

With premierships in 2nds/3rds/4ths, 10B's and 9B's, and 2nd placings in 1sts, 10A's, 9A's and 8A's I'd be surprised if they didn't.

Not sure how many would have seen the Courier Mail team as it is probably behind paywall for most, but here it is to give an idea on what we could see from AIC.

1. Harry Gould (ASH)
2. Dan Healey (PAD)
3. Saxon Warwick (IONA)
4. Tom Twaddell (VILLA)
5. Ryan Jackson (SLC)
6. Jack Condon (ASH)
7. Joe Nadenic (SLC)
8. Harry Holt (SLC)
9. Thomas Parker-Ryan (SLC)
10. Gus Godwin (VILLA) - noted for being out of position
11. Oscar Hawes (SLC)
12. Mikael Ibrahim (SLC)
13. Tim Ryan (SPC)
14. Dwayne Ludwick (ASH)
15. Jeremy Trappett (IONA)

RESERVES: Jackson Goss (SLC), Malakai Davis Raeli (SPC), Jack Booker (SPC), Harry Grant-Smith (VILLA), Alec Wilson-Hodge (ASH), Will Valentine (ASH), Will Andreas (ASH), Max Johnson (PAD), Hayden Molkentien (SEC), Kadin Pritchard (SPLC).

Obviously, the reporter would have felt the need to put someone from each school as well as naming a Fullback at 10 so the actual official line ups could look very different.

Really pleased for the SLC boys. Really disciplined all season and got the rewards. I felt the game vs St Eddies was a bit of an anticlimax - the ref blew the pea out of his whistle in the final 30 mins particularly, with both sides getting slammed. It all led to a weird fizzer of a finish to watch - not that the players and staff would have cared! #12 scored one of the tries of the season early in the second half. He’ll be dining out on that for years.

What’s also good for SLC is some of their best performers over the season are in year 11 and will be back next year - 3, 12, and 13 in particular.

As well as adding 3 hookers to the bench?!

Apart from giving the Villa 15 his true position and changing a couple of reserves into the starting lineup it looks pretty close.

Yeah they did. MCA still going ok after claiming premierships in 17,18,19 and 20.

First of all, congratulations to Laurie's on their well deserved premiership. It was a full team effort and they deserve all the accolades they get. An extremely well coached and well disciplined display of rugby. I'm sure the school and community are over the moon and so they should be. Well done lads.

As for the AIC team, not a bad effort from the CM journalist, and I agree there was some allowance for including all schools. However some players were picked based on one or 2 games and you cannot pick someone at 10 just because they had to be there. I agree Godwin should be in the team but not at 10, especially when there was a clear standout 10 running around. He also missed an important inclusion, and that was coach.

I'll continue the debate and name who I think would be in an AIC rep team.

Forwards I agree with what he chose except 1 position.

1) Harry Gould (MCA) - standout loose head. Still U16 and embarrassed plenty of well credentialed u18 tight heads. Powerhouse scrummager and pick and drive specialist. Knows his way to the tryline too. Goes hard for the full 70.
2) Dan Healy (Padua)- Tireless work rate, good lineout thrower and scrummager. Offers a lot around the field and competes in everything.
3) Saxon Warwick (Iona) - just sneaks in with plenty of good tightheads around. Ball running gets him there. The go to man in the Iona pack.
4) Ryan Jackson (SLC) - Big bodied powerful ball runner and strong defender. Brad Thorn type lock. Bloke you'd want on your side.
5) Tom Twaddell (Villa) - Classic, tall, lineout winning lock. Good work rate, pack leader.
6) Joe Nedanic (SLC) - Strong defender, excellent over the ball. Seemed to be everywhere.
7) Jack Condon (MCA) - Classic number 7, always looking to pilfer. Great with ball in hand and can make breaks where none seem possible. Very fast, often outpacing backs with ease.
8) Will Valentine (MCA) - Journalist said he was thinking of "transplanting" him to 8. Makes me think he didn't watch any Marist games as he played no.8 all year. Tall, strong ball running player who also loves the breakdown, getting plenty of turnovers. Also offers that all important 3rd jumper option in the lineout. Was generally MCA's go to man there.

Backs I have gone for some different options.

9) Jackson Dows (SPC) - Great pass both sides, always looking to snipe and good acceleration.
10) Lachlan Marchant (SLC) - Best 10 by quite a bit. Smart backline general with a good rugby brain who followed the game plan and knew when to kick for territory or when to run. And his kicking was normally spot on, finding space and turning the opposition around.
11) Dwayne Ludwick (MCA) - Best winger in the comp. Strong, fast and elusive. Try scoring machine and plays best when given a roving commission to pop up anywhere.
12) Mikael Ibrahim (SLC) - Big, strong centre. Often broke the line with ease using his fend. Solid defender.
13) Gus Godwin (Villa) - Played at fullback this year and always tried to spark something in attack, but plays best at outside centre where he got picked in QLD 1. Would not call it picking him out of position. Has an X factor about him that leaves defenders hanging off him.
14) Oscar Hawes (SLC) - Solid winger with pace, very good defender and great goalkicker.
15) Kadin Pritchard (SPLC) - Again, not really out of position as he is a fullback playing out of position at 12 this year no doubt to get him closer to the ball and lack of options in the Peter's backline. I've seen what he can do at fullback so gets my nod. Would love to see him play behind a dominant forward pack and slick backline. Big, fast, strong and elusive with a nice boot. Always looks dangerous with the ball in hand.

Bench;

16) Jack Booker (SPC) - big bodied solid prop. Would be a good impact player with strong carries..
17) Alec Wilson-Hodge (MCA) - Close to being in the starting side. Pin point lineout thrower, good scrummager and works hard around the field. Played every minute this year.
18) Nick Harper (MCA) - Powerful scrummager who was the anchor of a dominant MCA front row. Strong carry metres, good hands and defence is rock solid.
19) Pat Gavin (MCA) - Got better with every game. 2 metre lock with big future.
20) Harry Holt (SLC) - Strong, skillful no.8 who would be a good impact off the bench. Could fit in anywhere in the back row.
21) Thomas Parker-Ryan (SLC) - Clever half with crisp pass. Gave great service to his 10.
22) Joe Woods (SLC) - Very impressed with this lad, unlucky not to start. Big, powerful and fast 13. Also, a bit underrated it would seem. Probably not by his team mates though.
23) Jeremy Trappett (Iona) - toss of the coin for the outside back utility position with Pat Tierney (MCA). Has probably a bit more pace so gets the nod. Not much in it though.

Coach - Welmar du Plessis (SLC). Pretty sure there will be no arguments there.

So that's 8 SLC, 7 MCA, 2 each for St Pat's, Villa and Iona, and 1 each for Padua and St Peter's. Seems about right.

Anyway, just one man's opinion. Anyone else want to put forward a team?

yes no maybe

I would have Holt at 8, Booker at 3, Warick at 1. Would need to include Tim Ryan (St Pats) in there somewhere.

With these teams of the season floating around i would like to briefly form one also - very similar to T-Bone.

Coach: Welmar Du Plessis - Did an incredible job with SLC

1. Harry Gould (MCA) - Very impressive for an U16 prop, was a standout front rower
2. Karl Kassulke - Son of all-time great Matt Kassulke - Karl was a workhorse around the field and his high-level defence was on display.
3. Harry Grant-Smith (VILLA) - Extremely strong and menacing in attack and defense
4. Ryan Jackson (SLC) - Incredible defense and strong ball running
5. Tom Twaddell (Villa) - Absolute workhorse, at every breakdown - great all around lock.
6. Harry Wallin (Villa) - Solid workhorse, constantly at breakdowns and always a high tackle count
7. Jack Condon (MCA) - Strong, fast and pilfering whenever possible - very solid loose forward
8. Joe Nedanic (SLC) - Very solid breakaway - solid defence and strong ball running
9. Thomas Parker-Ryan (SLC) - Great pass on him, very consistent
10. Henry Holt (Villa) - Biggest shoe in the comp, great conversion kicking and his general kicking gained many metres. Very crisp, consistent pass and set his backline up for many breaks/tries
11. Dwayne Ludwig (MCA) - Strong, Fast and great agility, was a machine on the wing but was poor in fullback.
12. Mikael Ibrahim (SLC) - Extremely strong and solid in defence, great ball runner - just
13. Cameron Bukowski (Villa) As an U16, Cam was extremely strong and his high-level league background proved deadly. His defence excelled and the sound and power of his tackles were incredible, often folding 18 year olds. Along with his solid playmaking and strong running he was an obvious pick for my team of the season.
14. Oscar Hawes (SLC) - Had all aspects of a solid winger - He is decently fast, very strong and has a great step on him. His solid defence from the wing was a huge part of the Lauries team.
15. Gus Godwin (Villa) - Again, primary position is 13 with plenty of talent in which he made QLD 1. Gus has as a solid boot, but his ball running and sidesteps made him very hard to contain in space and he proved to be deadly in offense.

Reserves:
16. Dan Healy (PAD) - Great all around hooker with a good workrate across the 70 minutes.
17. Saxon Warwick (IONA) - Very strong ballrunner and was an asset to the iona team
18. Aidan Delaney (Villa) - Aidan burst onto the 1st XV scene late into the season, showcasing his strong and aggressive ball running and solid defense. Has the big frame of a very strong prop.
19. Pat Gavin (MCA) - Has great potential for the future and great build for a lock
20. Tommy Lawrence (Villa) - Tommy is unlucky to not make the starting lineup, he never missed a tackle and was a solid workhorse. His efforts at the breakdown as well as his ball running were a vital part of Villa's XV. Can play anywhere in the loose forwards
21. Jackson Dows (SPC) - Extremely good pass on both sides and was very consistent halfback - also very fast
22. Tim Ryan (SPC) - Excellent 13 for Pats with great all around skill in the backline
23. Lachlan Nguyen (SLC) - Unlucky to not make the starting lineup - had one of the best shoes behind Holt, was a solid defender and very powerful and fast ball runner.

Chris

For anybody interested I've spent a few days accumulating the AIC stats for each team. Little bit of confusion on the names, but all teams and numbers are listed with metres, tackles, tries, etc. I know stats don't tell the full story but this is just for people who are keen on seeing the stat sheet standouts.

Bahahahahaha! Classic Hektor.

The problem with people picking their best 15 is that it their own opinion which doesn't make then right nor wrong. I am curious though how the school that came fourth could have more players in the 15 than the school that came first after an undefeated season? You named six Villa players, yet SLC only had five and MCA who came second after one poor game only get three. SLC Harry Holt is a standout for number 8, to not have him in the side at all is somewhat laughable. Every game he was a player that never shirked his responsibility and was always breaking tackles.

Yes Harry Holt was good, probably should have slotted him in there. If you wanna have a go mate then drop your own team? With the Villanova players, 2 are QLD 1, the other 2 narrowly missed out, another one has been offered multiple nrl contracts. so 5 of those 6 are definitely high caliber players who deserved a spot in MY team of the season, just because they didn't perform well over the season doesn't take away from these talents. Lauries were obviously the best team but i believe this was due to their disciplined coaching, and their best players who were picked in my side - forgetful of Harry Holt. Team of the season doesn't mean pick 13 lauries players and 10 MCA players.

Love Chris.

Personally I think Tbones team is spot on apart from the 3 minor changes I made in my post above.
Regarding Qld 1/2 players, considering a number of the kids in all of the above mentioned teams weren’t allowed to trial you are kidding yourself if you think either of the Qld teams is a true reflection of what’s best on offer.
