QLD Premier Rugby 2021

We will have dodged a bullet if lockdown is lifted on Tuesday. The comp could be on hold for some time.

As PC said , they’ve canned NRL games and seeing how quickly Sydney got out of control, the Qld Gov are going hard at this.

I’m wrong, if this round’s games are cancelled, UQ, GPS, Wests and Brothers all make finals regardless of any more rounds played or even if the last round is played and all lose.
With this outcome, I’m happy not to postpone this round.

At this stage… I think they’ll be lucky to have a finals at all.
Noting how quickly delta ripped through Sydney, it might already be too late to squash.

Without turning this thread into a Covid/politics chat - the fact we moved early with masks should help us

Although, these new cases were from a school, where masks haven’t been compulsory until now and the students have been mixing with wider family groups etc. Wait and see

I see Moses Rauluni is stepping down from the top job. Ben Mowen for HC????

So what now for QPR? Do they draw a line in the sand and split all points for last weekend and this upcoming weekend?

And hope that finals go ahead as planned. I think that's really the least disruptive plan for everyone, the teams will all know the lay of the land for finals.

If i were the QRU i'd have 4 plans;

1. Finals series as planned, based on current standings
2. Top 4 finals series based on current standing
3. Grand final only based on current standings
4. Season scrapped, championship awarded on current standings.

Why not just extend the season??? So that it can be completed in its entirety once a clearer picture on lockdown is known?

As much as this is 'the best' result for everyone, I'm not sure you can confidently extend the season without serious disruption in regards to finding an end date that works.

I know for example three Premier grade players across different teams who are all due to be married in the weeks after the end of the season. Now there is no guarantee those weddings will even go ahead, but if you extend the season you're risking teams playing in a final/grand final having to choose between a wedding or leaving their team 6 players short (assuming team mates are invited). I know other people specifically push work commitments back until after the season as well. It's an amateur competition don't forget so these guys probably won't be keen hanging out for 6 weeks waiting to be told to play again.

I think they need to make a call with the intention of playing the Grand Finals on the same weekend they are currently booked. Similar to what Adam says, if they can get some games before that, it's great. But if it means just the 1 v 2 for the Championship, those are the cards which have been dealt.

While it would be great to extend the season etc, there are just too many unknowns to make plans etc. Then there are the many player issues highlighted in the forum here. There is no way our Dr Young will permit any form of club / school sport until there is a zero/donut case day again. Add to that the lack of training and game time, I believe the QRU need to call it full time for the season. Award the premiership/s to the top of the table and we can all argue the decision here later.

Controversial, a few boys getting cold feet or do you have more inside info?

I would rather a result in a grand finalist of 1 v 2 then watch UQ handed a title they didn’t earn.

Minor premierships are great but no one celebrates Mad Monday off the back of a minor premiership.
Let’s cancel the regular season across all grades and see the top 2 or top 4 teams go out and earn their championship in a playoff format.

The biggest issue to a restart to the season could be how long the break in play and training ends up being.

If it’s only a mater of a few weeks , the finals should be able to be played as per the current standings.

Hard to expect teams to be finals ready if the break in the comp is extended more than a couple of weeks seeing they also aren’t allowed to train while in lockdown.

Could even be a minimum time with contact training before a restart? I’m not sure . Even though the season was a late finish last year, it was played without a break once the shortened comp kicked off.

As a UQ supporter , I don’t think you can hand out a premiership without a GF. Happy to take the minor premiership and leave it at that if finals can’t be played.

Conflicts with others sports, some clubs share grounds with sports like cricket. Also player availability gets messy by extending the season.

Any word on the reason? I thought he might be a good target for the Drua to get into their setup, given his experience and knowledge of the comp here.

What your kidding aren’t you? Don’t forget last year the grand final was on 1 November (I think?). I think if they want to “write-off” the last 2 rounds, then the qru then needs to pick an end-point for the grand final (say 15 oct) and if the games (finals) can’t be completed by then; I would make it a null year I.e. no trophies, just finished first second etc.

I think the trophies are only for winners of gf’s. No gf no trophies.

Yeah totally agree with no gf no title/trophy. Just look at last year with Easts beating uq when nobody thought it possible.
