TRC2021 - Wallabies v Boks @ Suncorp 18/09

I thought that was Valetini’s best game in gold.

Swinton might be a under some pressure, but he has done some good stuff too.

I feel it is likely Wilson will have to wait a bit longer for another crack.

Luckily Wilson is also the youngest by a few years of all the blokes currently in contention. His time will come.

Valetini is growing into the 8 role IMHO - leave him there. The balance in the forward pack is pretty good right now, they just need to ensure the changes brought by AAA's absence are suitably addressed.

What we need more than anything is better discipline. Just hold the line - the Boks will eventually kick it. We don't need to give away stupid penalties. If you let the Boks maul, they're going to give us headaches.

BPA to start if fit for mine. Swain to come back into the 23 if fit. A big focus will be defending the maul and Swain looks to be good at it and the lineout.
You dont really need both Hodge and JOC (James O'Connor) on the bench. I would have one or the other and then Paisami or Petaia to inject some energy into our attack when the game loosens up….if it loosens up.

Surprised at the calls to drop/rotate Valentini. I thought he had a huge game on the weekend and did what most had wanted from him that we didn’t see consistently against the ABs. He carried well, tackled hard, made few if any errors, cleaned out when required. Added some starch to the pack.
Rennie can’t move Banks after a winning test match especially with a relatively young winger who is still finding his feet at this level. Keep the same starting backline.

Reading like White will start, regardless of form good to give Tate a rest.

What's the love affair with Beale?
I can't see Rennie approaching him unless there are injury problems within the squad.
One of the most talented Wallabies in the past decade, look at how JO’C & Quade have matured. We’d be stupid not to pick him up on the EOYT. Why are we shocked that these mercurial talents still have value?

Kaituu and Tupou mentioned someones injury last a few more weeks. Not sure if its BPA or swain.
Tupou said a few weeks for BPA.
Also so cute in that interview that Kaitu’u, who was taught Tongan by his parents, helped Tupou heaps when he first arrived in Aus with the language barrier.

Last time I saw Beale play he was at outside centre for Racing, not fullback.
What would those dumb froggies know playing a 13 who can't tackle? Just proved to me that the old adage about there being lots of ways to play rugby successfully still works.

Kellaway is 25. He only looks young compared to old farts like us ;)

As for finding his feet? Four tries in four starts looks like he's doing alright. He's defensively sound and his overseas time brought him on in leaps and bounds IMHO.

Agree - I won’t be surprised if we see him get another crack before the end of the RC.

Generally speaking I don’t think there is a lot of harm in a young guy like Wilson getting dropped and given time to work on his game. I think McDermott this year is proof of that.

I know that there is a risk that these guys will get the shits if the end up on the outer and look for a contract OS but that is where we need to improve our development pathways and broaden our base.

Wilson seemed to have a take off Super Rugby year in 2020 and maybe a bit of second year fever. Rennie and co would have been talking to him about what he can improve which he’ll bring into Super Rugby 2022. Same thing happened with McDermott. It’s a learning curve and not a step back.

Yeah - good way to look at it.

Although I don’t think Wilson is really that far off. Defensively he has been excellent and his work rate remains top shelf. He isn’t making the line breaks this year he did last year, but they were mainly at Super level and both the Reds and Wilson himself played a more restrained game this year (which means he also isn’t making the errors). I would’ve still had him in front of Valetini before the last ABs game (and I thought Valetini was going reasonably well) but the coaching staff thought otherwise, and they were vindicated in the last game.

The reality is none of these guys are the finished article yet and it is one of those ‘good problem to have’ type issues.

I thought he was pretty good against France and in all of his tests last year. He is the most skilled back rower we have in link play, maybe with the exception of Hooper who seems to get better and better in this respect. I am sure that we will see him against Argentina and at some point on the EOYT. Great player with a big future.
