Are the Junior A's (13's 14's 15's) on the main oval or other ovals? Was a big topic of conversation last year.

My cousin told me they give priority to the upper grades and yr 12 boys. Under 13's, 14's and 15's play mainly at the Centennial Park ovals.

15A's, 16A's and open age on Johnson Oval. 13's 14's on Old Boys. I think that's the right mix. All open teams should play on the main for their last season and 16a and maybe if fixtures allow 15a.

From memory, the Newington Old Boys Ovals are very small and sometimes have dead ball lines that are cut short due to some dubiously placed fencing. Not sure if this has changed since the last time I have been to Stanmore but it is a shame that the 15 and 16 B's can't get a run on a full sized field.

I do think the fields are smaller than a regular-sized field. However, they used to not let the 15 and 16 a's play on the johnson oval - so at least they are giving the younger A teams an opportunity to play on the main oval.

It is a shame that not all 15's and 16's can play on a full size field. Starting from 8am, the Johnson is full till 3.15pm. Open yr 12 teams I believe should take preferance as it's their last year playing. To be lucky enough to have the wide expanses of Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and Parramatta. Guess there wasn't a lot of fields in the inner city in 1880 Stanmore. Remember sliding into the grandstand wall a few times back in my day.

I guess I'm just a little upset with the fact that the soccer facilities on the bottom ovals are so pristine and the Old Boys Ovals don't seem to get much love (or sunlight).

Newington's rugby fixtures for 30th April 2022!
It’s good to see that all the rugby teams will be playing at Stanmore this weekend.

From memory the Year 8’s or 9’s use to play at Tempe Reserve.

Has the number of teams declined ??? or has football moved all their games to Tempe Reserve freeing up Buchanan Oval for rugby??

I recall reading a few years ago that Newington had signed a 30 year agreement with the Inner West council to fund the upgrade to Synthetic fields.

Back in the day, the Buch was used for Rugby/Football. The Oldboys far field was the main football field. Due to drainage issues on Old boys, main football field was moved to Buch oval freeing up the Old boys for Rugby only. Tempe was used for 14's Rugby teams but Football has moved a lot of their games to Tempe now, freeing up more space for Rugby thus the 14's are back at New. Having ( unfortunately ) many football teams, accomodating them is difficult however they are happy to play many games "off site" which is good for Rugby. Compromise with having the Old Boys Rugby only. I noticed sometimes the View 1 and Scots Main are used for "other" sports. Newington's Johnson Oval will never be tarnished by a round ball or the "southern game". If it was up to me and the people on this website, there would be no nets on the posts, yet many boys choose to play the round ball game.

Yes, unfortunately it is true that the southern game gets played on view 1 for about 1 game per year, however you will never see the round ball game there which I guess is a small piece of respite.

Hi Wyvern Boy,

I’m slightly perplexed with your comments but I put that down to my Senior moment.
As you mentioned, football have moved most of their games to Tempe Reserve freeing up more space for rugby hence the Under 14’s are back at Stanmore.

If this is the case, why aren’t any rugby games being played on Buchanan Oval???
According to the fixtures that was posted by dusk all rugby games will be played either on Johnson or Old Boys Ovals.

Cheers

Brave tip on the Oaks v Barker game Wyvern. Hopefully a close one but Barker have a bloody good team ( Katoa should be out as Penrith in SG Ball Grand Final)
Anyway , hope you're right as my young bloke back on the field for Oaks this week. How good is it to be looking at potentially a full season of rugby being back.

More Footbal teams. Buch has become Football only. Old boys and Johnson are Rugby only. 23 New Rugby teams which is pretty good at the moment. Hopefully stay that way.

Hi Hankspank

Not knowing too much about either side I went with the home side. I did get a tip that Penrith was in the final. Barker 16's were only ok last year but as mentioned, 16's form is not always open form. Go the Oakhill boys !!
