The Crusaders reserve prop Tamaiti Williams was a beast and carried what I thought was the biggest rig in rugby at 196cm/144kg, but he's dwarfed by that NFL prospect.

I don't understand why the Rebels are not investing in their club competition to improve the standard and find some diamonds in the rough. 13 non match day players over the last 2 weeks have been playing in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition, not to mention I'm sure there has been some running around in Shute Shield too. I understand these are better comps for these players, but surely having these players spread across the Dewar Shield will strengthen the competition over time, even if it means players are moving between clubs each season.

Are the players I speak of. I know that alot of these players got picked up from the QPR and went back to play for their clubs, but surely I am not the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?

Are the players I speak of. I know that alot of these players got picked up from the QPR and went back to play for their clubs, but surely I am not the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?

Many of these are/were brisbane based, are very young and not on the big bucks (most just development or train on). Probably nicer to not just be in a stronger comp but back home.

It has been the way for the past few years. All the best Victorians who don’t make the Rebels leave for the Shute Shield or QPR without the Rising and NRC so then the Rebels play there players in better comps and it really hurts club rugby here.

If I am the coach on a 2 year contract and my objectives are to have some of these players ready for Super Rugby in 2023, then I would send them to Bris or Syd. If I was the CEO with long term objectives to grow club rugby, then I would think differently.

Look I agree, but until we get the NRC back so for all the talented juniors that come through the Rebels academy but aren’t good enough to go pro still have a pathway to higher honours by playing their club footy here the standard isn’t really strong enough to put the Rebels players in

There is obviously a lot of miss understanding here from people.
I spent sometime in both Dewar and QPrem albeit a decade ago, but still have a good understanding of what’s still happening.
For starters the Rebels cannot tell a player where they have to play, any contracted player that falls under the Players association agreement has a right to choose where they play their club footy. So even if the Rebels wanted them to play in Melb they couldn’t make them.
As mentioned in an earlier post, some of these guys are only on wider training contracts or train and trial contracts. We are talking low incomes.
Now this is where NSW and QLD have an advantage (Perth just too far away for players to choose to travel otherwise it would happen there as well). SS and QLD Prem have huge networks which help high priority players find employment or study opportunities. These links simply aren’t there to the same extent in Vic, we are talking extremely cashed up clubs with large infrastructure (at an amateur level) versus teams that hide their limited resources in a shipping container etc.
Also it’s rarely talked about there is limited money that can be transferred to players for game day appearances etc. due to their semi professional set ups. If you are on a very small minimum wage salary or 3-6month contract under $50k, then picking up extra income while also competing at a higher level that will expose you to greater opportunities both post career and rugby career, then it’s an easy decision for some.
Younger players from interstate can also move in with their parents allowing them to be full time pros as the contracts they are on would make this difficult.
If we had an NPC type comp that supplements players income with another $10-30k per year then this would immediately stop.

Just thinking about this today but the Rebels probably have more locals than the Highlanders do. Don't have the time to look at this right now but over the coming weeks I will.

Sorry but I don’t believe this is the case, RUPA used to publish their RBA but haven’t for a few years and i don’t remember this been a clause.
Perhaps there was a legacy amendment from when rugby went professional allowing players to choose which club within that state, but as the employer of that individual and governing body of the respective competition they’re well within their right to contractually oblige to play within the states club competition, for a multitude of reasons.
Melbourne is the only team which allow this, even the Brumbies players don’t play in the Shute Shield.

Yep as fair as I know Jake White made all Brumbies play in the John Dent Cup.. Not sure if its still the case but I believe it is.

It is influenced for the players to stay in Canberra to play club footy. Brumbies don’t include an allowance in contracts for flights to club games on the weekends.
It’s more of a case on no one challenging the coaches wishes to play in Canberra, otherwise they won’t get a call up to play.
