Qld GPS Rugby 2022

So you’re the bloke with a red cap on who was standing at the south east corner: the northern try line; the 50 meter line etc etc.
Both TSS locks are union boys as is the new 10. The 6 (16 on jersey is a new boy from Kebra Park) and not involved in the ref’s demolition or high tackles.
You seem to intimate that rugby league players are high tacklers
With which I’m sure leagues would take exception. The home team was marched on more than one occasion.
Strangely TSS had no such trouble with the same team against BSHS last week - boy have they learned some bad habits in a week!
The TSS coach is an experienced and ethical man , his record speaks for itself.
At the risk of turning this into an ad hominem affair; were you not on the 50 m mark in the first half when Jye Gray was flattened in what appeared like a trip after he kicked the ball ?
So one new league responsible for all that?
The kid might be new to TSS (full fee paying ) but he has been playing club rugby with Helensvale

The U18 pathway seems pretty disorganised at the moment. The trial for Reds U18 was scheduled on the same weekend many boys were playing in the Qld Rugby Schools state championships which Sunshine Coast won. There were boys playing in this championship who had to choose between a trial for Reds or playing in the State Championship. Some players opted for the Reds trial while others who had committed and paid their fees for the State Championships stayed put. I also believe there was a rugby league tournament happening over the weekend at the same time.

At the conclusion of the State Championships, a QLD team has been named to play in Sydney, meanwhile separately, the Reds have named their U18 team to play the Rebels and Waratahs over the next fortnight. So now, we have a dilution of talent spread across two QLD representative teams. Now some may argue that is a good thing as it exposes more boys to representative rugby and casts the net wider. The QLD championships also gives boys from state schools the opportunities to trial whereas the Reds U18 trials predominately contained 18-year-old boys now playing colts along with current schoolboys, mainly from GPS, AIC with a few Toowoomba, Sunny Coast and Gold Coast boys included.

The Reds trial and the State Championship are both valid pathways leading into the Reds program; however, it seems a bit disorganised with date clashes and schools choosing who to put forward for trials and what tournaments they will allow their boys to participate in. Ipswich Grammar for example prevented boys from trailing for U18 Met West, whereas State High allowed their boys to trial for Met East. I believe some other GPS schools also didn't support the QLD Championship as they didn't see it as a valid pathway. The Reds trial appeared to be the current academy players along with boys not currently playing in the QLD Championship. So, you’d argue that the current Reds U18 team may not be the best team that could be put on the park at this point in time.

There needs to be a strategy put in place that still allows for these competitions to continue, avoids the date clashes, and ensures all boys playing rugby are given an opportunity to participate without interference from outside parties and without having to pick and choose which is the better option for their rugby journey.

In September there is a second block of U18 matches against the Brumbies, Waratahs and Rebels. With no tournament clashes it will be interesting to see the makeup of the U18 Reds team that is selected compared to the current one and how many players from the QLD State championship team or other bolters push for selection.

In saying all that, congratulations to all the boys and best of luck to those who were selected.
I think you will find it was coordinated calendar until Sunnybank had to postpone being able to host the schoolboy champs back in May when the carnival was originally scheduled. My understanding is that Sunnybank were originally going to play their senior home games vs Norths at Redlands but when the Redlands grounds were closed due to the rains at the time - Sunnybank switched their games back to home ground which meant the Schoolboy champs had to be postponed.

Given the Reds had Academy coaching presence at the schoolboy champs nearly the whole time - it is hard to say that they ignored the boys playing in the carnival.

Thanks for the additional info re the scheduling changes. Makes sense now.

With regards to the Reds Academy coaching presence, I wasn't suggesting at all they were ignoring the carnival. It was more a 'punters' observation around the date clashes and the selection of 2 separate QLD teams on the same weekend, which you have since clarified. I'm sure the Reds academy coaches support all tournaments, club, school, etc, as valid pathways into the Reds program and keep a close eye on all of them.

I’m sure they would send selectors / coaches out to any major championship or carnival.

The pathways changed in 2019 and it went well that one year when it all ran to plan before Covid made a mess of both the Academy and Schoolboys pathways for 2020/21. The last year we had traditional Qld Schoolboys teams selected was 2018.

In 2019 RA took control of what became the Australian U18’s and interstate Academy games held over a couple of months were used as the major grounds for selection in this team. It’s separate from the Schoolboys sides that have been selected since 2019, but players can nominate for both. Mac Grealy played in the Reds Academy team and Qld Schoolboys in 2019. The GPS headmasters chose to “back” the Academy model in 2019 and with the exception of Terrace, GPS schools didn’t nominate any players for the Schoolboys trial that year. From memory, Marist Ashgrove didn’t either.

Ever since rugby became a term 3 sport in the GPS system , Qld rugby squads have been chosen before a game of GPS rugby has been played. The Australian Shools Rugby Championship that used to be the selection games for the Australian Schoolboy sides has for as long as I can remember been held in the June/July school holidays. That means even the old Australian Schoolboys teams were selected before a game of GPS rugby was played.

Selecting rep teams before a game of GPS rugby is played is not a new thing.

Why don't Australian rugby administrators just photocopy exactly what the NZ rugby do or the SA rugby do instead of coming up with constantly absurd ideas!? Surely we could find someone with some common sense to run rugby in Australia. The top rugby schools in the GP have superb programs and then as soon as you go the next step into the professional arena, it becomes ridiculous how poorly it is managed.

Watch Rob Toia #4 in tonight's Qld U19 State of Origin team v NSW U19.
Channel 9 live telecast
8pm

Jye Gray in #14 another playing First XV again this year
Lewis Mene (Churchie 2021) #2
Jojo Fifita (TSS 2020) #3
Jack Howarth (BBC 2020) #12
Kaleb Ngamanu (TSS 2021) as the 18th man for QLD

Toia seemed to always beat his defender but threw a few unlucky passes in the first half that would have resulted in tries. Him and Jye Gray will be stand outs this year.

wish we could have convinced him to stay in Rugby.
watched him over a number of years at BBC and thought his natural spot was 13.
Stay in Rugby? He’s always been in league apart from his scholarship years at BBC when he played a bit of schoolboy rugby whilst still playing league for Easts.

Asked him face to face a couple of years ago and his answer was "It is a head over heart decision" so I guess when a 20 year old can earn halfa a year he does have some smarts.

Its pretty quiet on here two weeks out from the season kicking off. The BBC crowd are a bit reserved this time. I would have thought BBC, Churchie, Grammar will all put in strong performances this year and a great chance to knock off both Nudgee and TSS.

Don’t think anyone is going to knock off Nudgee.

Yeah agree , think Nudgee would have to be having a very bad day to drop a game this year.
Every year on paper Nudgee should/could win, but they don’t Win every year. Considering the depth of talent, due to quality recruitment from league, 3 year seniors program for age qualified stars and a strong all year round rugby program for boys in the A and B squads they Dominate Across the age groups. There is few surprises from a Nudgee team with tactics, selections and attitude duplicated year in year out. Nudgee Pick and stick with players in the firsts and recruit to suit the pre determined game plan. Nudgee formula relies heavily on individual attack brilliance from key recruits while the rest of the team is built on defence. If you crack the formula though they can be beaten. This years first xv relies heavily on Toia and Bath. Neither are playing in trial today so will be interesting to watch how they go. The starting ten the coach has gone for has not fired yet in trials and has played very little rugby being a leagie import, and out all last year due to injury so will be interesting to see how he goes today. Has the coach made the right selection calls? I expect a solid win v Tce today but that may just set them up for a fall v TSS in the opening round If they get a bit cocky. Nudgee have no byes till the final round this year so predict their depth will be called on especially by the time they play BBC. Frankly the Nudgee 2nds would beat most GPS first teams, in fact if you take Bath and Toia out of the firsts, the 1st and 2nds are pretty interchangeable so will be interesting to see how both teams players go today. Good luck to all. Bring on the season.
