Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Sword of Justice

My kids go to a large QLD secondary school 3000 kids, they have AFL & NRL as a full subject option for kids for the winter term Girls & Boys. Rugby Union is not even an option, they try to put a team out each year but apparantly its very much a hit & miss.
For this reason you'd think RA would push 7s (they did this with Viva 7s but I believe that fizzled out) harder to at least be in the fight.

Someone from AFL was on ABC radio in Brisbane this afternoon, he said they need 20 more AFL grounds on the goal coast and across Australia they need a new ground every week to keep up with growth.

On the midweek games - we can’t really see them as a viable option longer term can we?

Historically midweek games do lower numbers on telly, lower numbers to the ground, undoubtedly those in attendance spend less in and around the venue, fewer watching in pubs across the country/world, etc.

Remains to be seen how the bled stacks up on a Thursday, but are we just trying to tap a market that doesn’t really exist?
Works for state of origin. The issue isn’t the midweek games unfortunately the issue is the wallabies

Maybe believable if you said anywhere but the Gold Coast.
I found it unbelievable too, but I guess if you planned on every Aus Kick player becoming a senior player then they will be needed. At the moment there are limited female senior teams in all football codes, if AFL could get every Aus kick girl to senior level it would be hundreds of teams in 10-15 years time

Sounds like a very afl thing to say, there is no way they need that but tell everyone this is the case to govt ppl belive them
Some Comrade McLachlan propaganda there. AFL is definitely playing a long game and is patient. You can see their progressive growth in the private school system going from 1/2 teams in an entire school to 5/6 10 years later. I do think Aussie Rules and Rugby are competing for the same kids both Boys & Girls. In general the AFL and Jail Rugby don't cross geographically and demographically IMO

Despite all the chat about the ref, still a great game of rugby that surely will have people interested.

Yes and no

A lot of the casual fans I've spoken to today have so many questions about the calls and some of the cards - the recurring line is "this is why your game doesn't make sense to me!"

Had the Wallabies actually won I think most of that chat gets pushed aside and people would be talking about how good beating the All Blacks is blah blah blah.

Anyway there is enough of that stuff being spoken about in the match thread. In terms of pure attendance numbers and viewership, it's great.

Yeah I'm pretty doubtful that the negative articles being run everywhere are good for increasing general interest in the game. On one hand any publicity is good publicity at this point, but on the other it's not exactly something that gets you thinking "I should tune in next week!".

On another note it's pretty dire to see the Rugby section on News.com.au's site sitting below American Sports, Golf, Boxing, Basketball, and 'Sports Life' (ie. gossip). I understand that, being Newscorp, they have vested (dis)interests, but it's still pretty telling. It'll be interesting to see how hosting the RWC impacts airtime/positioning.

Game was a resounding success from a broadcast perspective:

Looks like there will be more mid week tests in the future.

I'm of the position that we should be looking to run Tests mid week as a permanent thing alongside a push to greatly expand SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) if we remain involved in terms of schedule into a legitimate home and away season.

Very happy to eat some humble pie regarding midweek tests. Holding it in Melbourne during AFL finals (possibly with a boost to the crowd thanks to the sizeable Lions contingent in town) no doubt helped, but it's great to see regardless. I caught it at a pub up here and it was a pretty sizeable and boisterous crowd.

I reckon Thursday is the sweet spot - close enough to the end of the week so people can be a bit looser. Post-covid, Thursday has almost become Friday for a large contingent of city workers; bars and other venues are often busier Thursday afternoons/evenings than on Fridays now, due to the large number that work from home.

As a 27 year old in Sydney, most Saturdays I'll have either a friends birthday, an event, or a family commitment.

It's very, very hard to catch a Wallabies game given this as most of Australia simply don't care. My AFL-loving friends don't really have this problem, as entire friendship circles will build their calendar around big games.

I watched every game of the French series, and I adored the game last night. Friends who would've never given a single shit about rugby union were super active in the group chat, and it's no wonder to me the viewership was good.

If you can't dominate the mainstream, fight for territory on the fringes.

I love mid-week tests.
