Doritos Day

Exclusive to all of the above is a broader problem and that is the referees need to inject themselves into anything and everything so to raise their own profile. How many matches are now ending with 30+ penalty counts? How many phases before the referee or TMO stops play for some obscure law that has not been called for the last 80 years? Used to be a "7 phases" count metric, but I rarely see 3+ these days. And that suits the main audience for rugby - Europe. The ones who when polled a number of years ago said the most favoured outcome they like to see from a scrum is a penalty. This is not the game I loved for the better part of 30 years. It's currently stop/start/heavily adjudicated hot garbage. And it is not just the players at fault for this. World Rugby is to blame.
I don't know but it's not surprising imo because the rules as they stand are incongruent with a consistently exciting spectacle at test level.

There's so much on the line that teams are always going to play as cynically as possible.

Compare a game like yesterday to something from the Shute (or that semi-pro level) and it's almost a different sport at times, because the players aren't incentivised/trained to press the law book to the nth degree.

It gets brought up a lot but that study in the prem saying there's a technical infringement in 90%+ of rucks - if that's consistently true it all comes down to game by game interpretation hence why no one knows wtf is going on, because every referee will choose to penalise differently within that 90%.

Don't know what all the grumbling is about -- I watched the game at lunch today and enjoyed it. The first half was great, but I will concede the second half dragged a bit. Very happy with the win there, and I don't think it was undeserved. Also very happy with Pearce, which was incredibly refreshing. It's seemed to me that of late I've left test matches fuming about the refereeing quality, but I thought it was fair last night and that Pearce communicated very well.

We should've converted more opportunities, but we were able to apply pressure at the right times to ensure that Scotland fumbled most of their moments in our 22.

Looking forward to the French test. Probably gonna get rogered, but a boy can dream.

Is Riley better than Ikitau?

No?

Fuck off........

Not really but they are an odd bunch, I wasn't a fan of Reilly's performance, he kicked way too much and often poor kicks that went straight out that needed to stay in for longer.

i dont think ikitau and paisami were bad, they were definitely solid.

i agree that we need to shut. the. fuck. up. the amount of lip had me more pissed off than pearce who tried to be a stand up comic to deal with it.

i'd rather we be stoics, and have slips do the talk and we back it up with action. we got completely blown away at the ruck, and while i feel it was inconsistent, i would have blown up the wobs for talking too much and being general whingers.

were in for a long tour with too many whingers, too many penalties for unnecessary infringements and too many watching a ruck instead of getting stuck in .... legally ....

And just to add more into "how good this referee was"...

He blew his whistle for the final penalty of the match at 77:54. The Scottish kicker started his run in at 79:38 and actually kicked it at 79:40. That's 106 seconds of actual in game time where the ball was not in play but the clock was allowed to run down. There were no warnings to any Scottish player to hurry up their play.

Well spotted. French club rugby have a shot timer next to their game clock so's all can see the minute counted down. This is one instance where there's a flaw in the Laws: the minute notionally starts when the kicking tee arrives, which, theoretically can take forever. My suggestions:

1. Teams have 10 seconds to indicate a kick for goal, otherwise a kick for touch (or scrum or tap) is mandatory.
2. Game clock stops and a kick timer starts (as in France). Kicker has 45 seconds to kick the ball, after 45 seconds a bell is rung. At 45 seconds, game clock recommences.

We are in the northern hemisphere where we just k now the referring judgement calls are different. People have been warning about it for ages as we lead up to the RWC. If Pearce is the standard we'll do fine (not to say that the chatter should not stop). The reffing was fine.

It was a nice change that we didn't quite manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yesterday.

What a boneheaded penalty by Tupou. We got really lucky there obviously with the missed kick.

Well done by Nic White for the smart and well executed bit of play on the 22 dropout.

Unfortunately often complaining & gesticulating can swing the ref our way. Eg. White's dive against Faf and Slipper's remonstrating against the Scottish prop's superman dive. Not sure they would've been ruled unless they complained.

If the result of White not being a primadona would have been that we did not get a penalty (and card to opposition) - so be it. No room for it.

Slipper remonstrating, as captain, is a another matter. Not at all the same.

Honestly it could be time to instil a new captain for the RWC who is brand new and doesn't have former relationships with referees. Who that is, no idea.

Well, that was the rocks and diamonds we've almost come to expect from the Wallabies.

First 10 minutes we looked pretty slick in attack - lot of good movement off the ball and reasonably accurate passing to depth runners. We held the ball for phases and put the Scots under a lot of pressure. McDermott prominent here.

I'm not sure how AR Karl Dickson finds fault with our scrum around the 10 minute mark. We nudge them back, then the Scots hooker pops up under pressure before their loosehead (elbow down the whole time) bores in to try and rescue the situation.

Holloway guilty of turning in for the dummy runners on the Scots try, but his hands and presence in the first half are essential to some of our gain line metres out wide. Note he is out in the tram tracks as the lead runner for a pod of outside backs, often doing the simple draw and pass that we've lacked so much.

Scotland's game plan is evident from the get-go: flood the field with shit. They're jumping across our lineout (missed then called), they're piling into our ruck, and they're hanging around the back *just* long enough to slow down our possession. Very ABs, that last bit.

That said, once again our ruck accuracy simply isn't good enough, tho we kept Watson fairly quiet in that area.

Foley is going Foley things, in that he's just running the backline without too much finesse, and making the odd mistake. Need Lolesio, Donaldson, and Edmen (Harrison?) to have good years or we'll be taking old men to France.

Scotland are idiots BTW: penalty in front 35 out, turned down. Penalty right in front of the sticks, 5m out. Turned down. The pick n go decisions were bad when they could have flung it to the backs in the first half when threatening our line.

Also: jumping into the tackle penalised. First time I've seen it in a game from the Superman Scots prop.

Scotland's defensive pattern in the second half was to leave the ruck alone - given their lead, decided not to give away easy metres I guess.

If I had one complaint with Pearce, it was desperately looking for a yellow rather than red card for Blue 19.

Other than that, we were our own worst enemies.

As a group, could the players just shut the fuck up? I get Kellaway might have been confused with the decision against him, but sort it out at the end.

Tupou. Jeez...

Anyway, we won. That's the headline.

brilliantly exectuted. Smart? The ref had to tell him 2 or 3 times before he did it that he couldn't kick it straight out.

I didn't hear that bit and not sure whether he would have kicked it out on the full (in which case he would have been a massive idiot).

Smart to go for that play rather than defaulting to a long dropout in general play.

Still quite don't get how he couldn't just kick it out. My understandings is that short arms end the game, long arms keep it going. Might be a bit simplistic tho.
