SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) 2023 General Chat

The most realistic outcome is reached.

Will be quite interesting to see the 2024 - 2027 4 year cycle in Super Rugby with Aus building up for a home World Cup and no Razor at the Crusaders (and likely no MacDonald at the Blues).

Can't see too much changing in 2023 though Tahs must be eyeing up taking the top Aussie spot and players being managed all over the comp in the build up to 2023 RWC.

Will also be interesting what happens when the broadcast deals come up for renewal in a couple of years.
RA should be in for a decent deal youd hope with so much extra content to sell.

Well there is a preset view reaching support of a result they wanted.

I suspect that NZRu won't stop playing games and that we continue down a road, slowly to division. It's a decision that is an interim as much as it is realistic.

NRL is consistently average. I think Rugby has higher highs and lower lows but the whole spectrum is shifting downwards. Uncompetitive games, TMO bullshit - few things need ironing out.
Although the actual football has been great too. Limited team playing beyond their ability. Opposite to the Wallabies

I think realistically for all the bluster etc kiwiM is bang on. I wonder if something does happen with proposed on a World club championship going forward how much difference it will make to any comp after 2030 which seems an awful long time away at this stage. I would also think by 2030 the Japanese could very well be in a position to have a part of a comp going forward, as their comp format will be well bedded in and be looking a tweeks to keep it moving forward. Will also be interested by then to see how PI teams are settled in and doing which would also make a difference to comp going forward.
But guess most of these posts should be in a different thread as this is meant to be about 2023?

And everyone will be running out to buy the membership packs knowing there's a good chance half the team will be rested or on a sabbatical when they go to watch!!!
it would be interesting to see what modelling the RA did absolutely none of their fan base knew about it. I could have done a bit of modelling for them, your broke???
Sadly, the domestic option went out the window a few years ago but who knows maybe Super rugby Pacific could be a success if they genuinely wanted it to be, but more likely window shopping something the RA and NZR do pretty well.

Yep, we don't need another "Where To" thread going in ever-decreasing circles.

Yep it done, so like I say perhaps let get on with just discussing 2023 season.
And for my Canes, I am hopeful that they will go alright, not expecting to win comp, but still think they will be in finals if Roigard goes as well as I hope now TJ is out for season.
I pretty interested to see how other kiwi teams go to of course, and with Aus teams how Tahs go, having lived in Qld fro so long, I used to follow Reds a bit, but pretty neutral on them all now, and just think Tahs seem the team from Aus that have the best chance of improvement on table.
Am interested to hear other thoughts too.

Sometimes I get excited about a loig match to give me something to watch, particularly on a Sunday afternoon. 90% of the time I am disappointed and don't even watch the whole game, the other 10% of the time admittedly I nail a cracker.

Gatland leaving Tribe with immediate effect to take up the Wales head coaching gig.
Funny isn't it, just goes to show the difference between coaching Super and test rugby, he has had no success at all while being involved with Chiefs, and yet has been Wales most successful coach, and off to try again. And probably keeps his record alive, got asked to go back there. He was saying last year he has never applied for a coaching job.

If by keeping his record alive you mean Garland not needing to apply, well, okay. Suggestion is it was a 5-year deal too?

His record of success with Wales might not stay alive though. Their golden generation is pretty much on the way out.

I wonder if Wayne Smith might be tempted if offered Gatland's Director of Rugby role? Esp as it encompasses the youth & women's programs, both of which Smith is passionate about.

I tend to agree kiap, I do think Wales is perhaps as weak playerwise as I have seen them since early 90s. As you say their golden generation may just be going.

I actually don't think he really very involved in preseason etc, MacMillans has really run the team the last couple of years I think.
Still, head coach is a strong factor for players and staff when making decisions about their future. Bit rough for players who hoped to be coached by him and he quits before the season
