Wallabies 2023

The Ghost of Raelene

Wallabies just put an Instagram clip out that says Tate has signed through to 2025. Earlier one says 2027.... Bit up in air right now. I tend to think 2025 makes more sense.

Urghh. That was the start of a previous post that I didn't go ahead with because I knew it was wrong but now that the forum remembers what you have typed as a draft it was still there when I posted something different and unrelated and I didn't notice.

I feel ya…

You know this for a fact? When their financial report for '22 hasn't been released yet? And after they maintained a profit in '21?

I understand your concerns around the viability of expansion, and it's fair to call out the poor crowds, but you can't just make up evidence to support your arguments.

I’d days it is pretty close to a fact, Brumbies admitted they have had some of their long term lease for their training facility at UC returned to them. They had paid upfront for the lease from money made in selling their last ground, but they’ve now had that partially refunded and lease shortened to provide a financial injection into the club to shore up finances.

But I’d say it’s a fact for all Super Rugby clubs, QLD and NSW also. None of them are flush with cash. Rebels and Force don’t make their reports publicly available.

I think you will be eating.

Coaches would have a big impact on top-ups and Rennie never thought Tate was a surety in the 23 and Eddie hasn't picked him as his top 2 9s.

I can't imagine any player deemed 3rd in their position is on a top-up.
Nah he would be on a top-up. It could be a back-ended contract even with anticipation that White probably won’t be around past 2024, he definitely isn’t making 2027.

As much as Tate says he loves Queensland, he isn’t signing a 4 year contract without some kind of top-up. Super Rugby salary alone isn’t that good.

I follow rugby 24/7 and it has been a common topic here. The financial struggle of Brumbies and almost any Aussie side.

They found hard to get a main sponsor for their jersey in 2022 and got it with the start of the competition. Ray White and just for a year. After that they struggled to find another main sponsor for the 2023 season and got the new one few weeks before the competition started. Those are indications they are struggling

Also, they lost many big names in recent seasons and had to figure out with minor signings

Brumbies would be in a stronger position had Fagan not screwed the organisation.

RWV got a R.A. top-up despite never playing for the Wallabies.

Doesn't necessarily mean they're getting '000s.

McDermott and Wilson are 100% getting something from R.A. even if it's a smaller portion of their contract than bigger stars.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, as I have 10+ pages to catch up on, but I'm not too surprised by the players that have missed out.

This is because I think Eddie has simply swapped some of the obvious players who have missed out -- who all are either bench players, or squad players -- for players that he simply needs more data on. I think he'll look at these players to get a gauge of whether they have more merit moving forward with, relative to their counterparts in the 'obvious exclusions' list.

Harry Wilson missed out, but he's very unlikely to start at 8 or 6 in place of Valetini or Holloway. Langi Gleeson has only played a handful of Super Rugby games and a handful of Australia A games, so more data would be useful here.

Noah Lolesio missed out, but it's clear that he shouldn't be Australia's first choice flyhalf leading into the RWC (hopefully Quade will be fit). With ~40 Brumbies and ~20 Wallabies performances to draw insights from, Eddie would assume he has a good idea of his ability. Carter Gordon is still an unknown quantity at Super Rugby level, let alone Wallaby level, so more data would be good here.

Same thing with McDermott / Gordon and Lonergan etc.

Re Tate - and Jake Gordon - I would suspect they received similar phone calls. Something along the lines of 'we obviously need a 3rd halfback in the squad but you're not doing it for me right now'. The 3rd one cant be Louwrens or Simpson, and I doubt the understudies at the Reds and Tahs are front runners ahead of the aforementioned. So unless Nick Phipps suddenly re-signs with a Super team and plays the house down it is going to be one of those two, if not both of them - the message from Eddie was 'get your shit together'.

Clearly he's laying the groundwork for Tawera Kerr-Barlow to make his debut in the Canary jersey against the All Blacks in the town of his birth.

"There are plenty keen to see the big back-rower put together some game time, not least Wallabies coach Dave Rennie. Rugby Australia tipped a little in the bucket as top-up to get Warren-Vosayaco home in 2022 and view him as an X-factor talent."

I think Wilson is a better defender than Hanigan.

Wouldn’t know where to get the statistics. Just eye ball test. (That’s the one eyed rabid qld reds fan eye ball test mind you)

if any tribal warratah fan wants to prove me wrong with next level stats, happy to be schooled.
