Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I think quite a bit has changed since the last two broadcast deals and with so many leiple
Cutting the chord, the best path forward might be back on fox with an ability to subscribe just to sports via an app especially.
Seems like they could probably offer more money which is desperately needed. Maybe can get a couple games a week on free to air as well but the future isn’t in free to air….

Been a bit of chat on the Rebels thread about this, it's time to stop thinking about Stan/Fox. There are so many options out there and just need to get creative, FloRugby (The Rugby Channel) has a annual sub of about $150 a year, it's got USA rugby, Rugby championship, 6N, 6N U20s, URC, Heineken Cup, Top 14 already.

The money is definitely a big priority for Rugby Australia so they'd need to see a clear upside elsewhere not to accept the highest bidder.

That said, I would opt for Stan over Fox Sports if the money was close. The concept that Foxtel provides better exposure because they have more subscribers is a furphy. We did that for 25 years and it was clear that it wasn't a thing.

Also it'd be nice to be with a broadcaster who wasn't constantly trying to undermine the sport.

Agreed, the deal with Nine/Stan offers so much more with Super Rugby having one FTA match per week, the complete Wallabies test schedule that was not guaranteed with previous Fox deals, and an increase in marketing and cross promotion with Nine's other programming and newspapers.

And although there were other factors such as Covid and Super Rugby Au, there was a massive ratings increase following the move to Nine.

I guess Stan has an app too correct?
Seems like a one stop shop for rugby fans but hard to see new fans subscribing to that for that price but if with Stan or foxtel and you can also get afl league and some soccer etc.
Hopefully a huge number comes through for us.

The AFL was offered more money from other platforms but chose to stay if I recall correctly

FloSports has a lot, not just rugby. Australian money just ain't going to be enough, unless paramount or ESPN come on board it's time to look for what's working abroad.

Super sport in SA do a good job, SkySports NZ is the same as Fox sports, Europe the game rights are all over the place these days with multiple deals on. I think some of the 6N is on Amazon in England.

There was some chatter yesterday in Melbourne rebels thread about streaming options…

someone pointed out that kayo could be in trouble if espn/disney ever launched their own service

weird timing but it looks like Disney-Fox-tnt are joining forces abroad to create a super sports streaming service (which is practically what kayo offers in Australia only)

will be interesting if this partnership pushes kayo business model to adapt in anyway… Aussies have had it lucky with sports streaming in this country as espn has always piggybacked on the back of Foxtel/Kayo etc to get their content into Aussie homes/aussie devices

Well I know I watch a lot of NFL and some NBA and even the college stuff but I won't pay for a separate app for it. It's just a nice option along side cricket and NRL for me.

Is there anything worse than a diverse range of different streaming services all with only one or two main draws? fucking sucks giant bags of dicks.
A monopoly with all the sports putting in a half-assed effort and paying unders?

League pass options for American sports have become more affordable over the last few years. And to my knowledge they aren't location locked as yet, so you can share a login with a few people as they usually let you stream 2-3 screens at once.

As someone who watches all sports essentially and has a family, I'm very open to the idea of the mega DisneyxESPN product making its way to Australia.

If Fox did lose the ESPN catalogue, I reckon there would be a big chance of them doing standalone NRL and AFL league pass type products. I know the NRL had something a few years ago - as a Telstra customer I was able to download the NRL app and stream all games live and free (using the fox broadcast). Not sure if that is still a thing.

I'm not sure ESPN could justify running independently in Australia, I'm not sure it would have any big draws - all the big sports are elsewhere. But conversely, it's very handy for Kayo, in providing a lot of other content. I had ESPN for years through Optus and Fetch, and it was probably best for NBA and MLB, but that market would be trimmed by the season passes directly from those comps.

Everyone told me to cut the cord with foxtel and just do steaming services…

there’s so many services now. To get what you need is putting it back into the foxtel price range.

im not a fan of Stan (for sports) yet I pay the 30.00 a month so I can watch my qpr rugby.
